Article of turmeric
that use the ‘Indian Saffron’ as key raw material are mulling to raise the retail price of their products.
A quintal of turmeric crossed Rs 12, 000 barrier and touched Rs 12, 419 at Erode regulated marketing
committee on Tuesday . Certain varieties like Salem turmeric touched an all-time high price of Rs 13,010
at the auction held by Erode Turmeric Merchants and Godown Owners Association on Wednesday.
Due to less arrival this year, the price of turmeric has been growing steadily in the last few months at
Erode market. After touching an all-time high of Rs 5,600 per quintal on June 12 , the price has been
escalating and the industry people expect it to touch Rs 15,000 per quintal soon.
"We are waiting for the price to sustain at one range for a longer time so that we can revise the selling
price of our products," Mr D Senthil Kumar, director of Erode-based Rs 300 crore Sakthi Masala
company told ET.
He said, turmeric is one of the three most important ingredient in the masala industry (others being
chilli and coriander). "The continuous price rise will have an impact on our production cost. But it also
depends on how often the fluctuation happens since we also keep some stock with us," he added.
The Coimbatore-based Arya Vaidya Pharmacy too feels the pinch when the price of turmeric increases.
"Nearly 7% to 12% of raw material in our medicine preparations is turmeric and the rise in prices will
definitely impact us," said Arya Vaidya Pharmacy’s additional GM Commercial, Devidas Varier.
However he added the company only recently increased its product prices by around 10% after general
increase in prices of around 450 raw materials that are used by them.
Apart from food processing industry and pharmaceutical companies, turmeric is a valuable raw material
for paint and oil industries also. But due to lack of value-added industries in Erode, most of the turmeric
produced in the region is sold to traders from the North.
Out of the annual requirement of 40 lakh to 45 lakh bags of turmeric (1 bag = 75 kgs), Erode market
contributes to around 15 lakh to 20 lakh bags every year. The turmeric from Erode, Bhavani, Salem,
Attur and even Chamrajnagar in Karnataka come to the Erode market regularly.
Federation of All Trade Association of Erode District president N Sivanesan told ET that the price rise is
mainly because of the reduction in acreage of turmeric sowing, which had come down to 9,000 hectares
in 2008-09 compared to 14,856 hectares in 2007-08 in this region.
Mr S A Nallasami, secretary, Federation of Tamil Nadu Agriculturalist Association said the price rise is
good for farmers but then, the production cost is also escalating. He said, around Rs 50,000 is required
to produce turmeric in 1 acre of land and that led farmers to move away from turmeric.
Following the spurt in turmeric prices, the farmers have increased the sowing area by nearly 25% this
year and so, the prices are expected to come down when the new crop starts arriving, Mr Sivanesan
added. Turmeric is usually sown from May till August and the harvesting starts by January.
