FULL Lesson Plan for 2-16-18

Teacher Name: Michael Fibelkorn

Objectives: In a large ensemble, Students will identify and perform the melodic concept of “do”
through singing and choreographed movements while maintaining the tonal center.

Standards Being Addressed:


 2.4 PS The teacher creates music appropriate for various developmental stages.
 4.6 PS The teacher demonstrates effective strategies for developing students’ growth
through a variety of active musical experiences.
 5.3 PS The teacher demonstrates effective strategies for student exploration of the
music of various historical periods and cultures as appropriate for various developmental
stages.
 6.1 CK The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to measure
student growth, monitor student progress, and inform both student and teacher
decisions.

Materials of Instruction:
Teacher will need 2nd grade Spotlight on Music
“Matarile” and Recording
“Bow, Wow, Wow” (pg. 264) and Recording
“Who’s that Tapping on the Window” (pg. 261) and Recording
Projector
Hearts
Whiteboard w/ marker

Lesson Sequence (lessons may have more or less activities as appropriate):

Entry Activity/Transition/Warmup: 3 part instrument warmup. T uses form shapes to introduce


two new rhythms – triangle shape is for the sticks and circle shape is for the drums. Learn all
the rhythms together then layer on having a rhythm harmony.

Transition: Now that we’ve gotten our hands and instruments warmed up, let’s put those
instruments into learning a new song.
Activity #1: Review/Introduce “Who’s that Tapping on the Window?”

1. Ss read rhythms
2. Ss play rhythms
3. T echoes pitches
4. T adds words
5. Ss sing a cappella

Transition: T asks Ss “I want to add instruments, drums and sticks, but don’t know where to add
them”

Activity #2: Add Instrument accompaniment (triangle, sticks, and drums)

1. T mentions the other class’ decisions for instruments with the song (accompaniment)
2. T adds in sticks, drums, then triangles
3. T plays song a cappella

Transition: T labels song and has Ss get in circle.

Activity #3: Circle with Instruments for “Tapping on the Window (put your instrument on the floor, pass
it to the right to the one next door

1. T says part A is song with Instruments. B is put your instrument on the floor, pass it to the right
to the one next door
2. T and Ss practice slowly and gradually speed up

Transition: Sing/Review “Matarile”, Dance in free space around the room

T “What did you hear, first pitches in matarile?” (isolate ddrm). Find where it goes MRD
in recording of new song, Bow wow wow.

Activity #4: Teach “Bow, Wow, Wow” (teach the MRD – bow wow wow by isolating first)
1. Ss come to floor in front of whiteboard
2. T plays recording, having the Ss try to locate a mrd pattern
3. Ss sight read pitches only with hand signs
4. T gives Ss time to think pair share
5. Ss sight read pitches
6. Ss read rhythms
7. Ss play rhythms (drums play first measure, sticks play second, everyone plays the last
2)
8. T adds words
Transition: Echo body percussion (stomps and claps)
Activity #5: “Bow, Wow, Wow” Partner Dance (Patterned Movement)
1. T has a volunteer help out with the new dance
2. Ss partner up and T sequences practice time slowly
3. T and Ss practices a cappella and speed up
4. T and Ss Circle up and practice a cappella
Conclusion: T continues with partner dance in a circle for as much time as possible until class is
up.

Assessment: T will have students dance and play instruments in order to assist them in playing and
singing songs that contain Re. The main goal of this lesson is to prepare students for singing re without
them blatantly knowing that they are singing re.
