EVERYTHING LOST IN A MONTH!

He was 5 years old when he lost his
mother and having an alcoholic for a father
left him bouncing from relative to relative.
Patrick Kay didn’t have a home. These
kinds of uncertainties caused him to hold
tight to relationships that left him making
wrong choices. He began drinking in high
school and has been through two marriages

marriage they would bring each other
down with the same addictive personali-
ties. Using drugs and alcohol together, he couldn’t function and would get fired
from work. Everything was lost in a month’s time and the spiral would continue.
Staying with friends or in a shelter, Patrick had nothing. “It’s horrible and depress-
ing. It makes you want to use even more.” Hating himself and his life, he was very
depressed and suicidal.

God brought him to the Salina Rescue Mission, a place with help so he didn’t have to
deal with outside pressures. God was never a real part of his life before. Now, Jesus
had been instilled in his heart. Patrick literally broke down on his knees and cried
out to ask God to take control of his life. Patrick is working in a career he loves
remodeling houses from start to finish, staying in recovery at AA meetings five times
a week, and attending church regularly. He’s a Christian, he cares and is honest. He
says, “Thank you, Jesus!”

HOPE FOR HARRY.

Having lost everything in life that was important
to him, Harry Helsel made his way to the Salina
Rescue Mission with no idea how this one
decision would change the course of his life
forever. Harry was born in Swissville, Pennsyl-
vania and was one of sixteen children born into
the Helsel household. Sadly, Harry lived a life
of abuse and mistreatment from his very own
father. As he grew older, Harry knew he had to
escape the abuse, so at the age of 16, he joined the Marines. Eventually, he married
and left the Marines to begin farming. He had all he wanted. That is until his wife
of nineteen years passed away from cancer. She suffered in her last days and Harry
suffered in her loss. He moved to Salina to be with his son just 6 short months after
his wife’s death. But even this move brought heartache. Due to a misunderstanding
between father and son, Harry soon lost even that relationship, and eventually his
job and finally his apartment. He was at rock bottom but not without hope.

Harry came to the Salina Rescue Mission in 2003. He was angry, rowdy, out of

been able to work through each of these issues and now knows the peace that comes
only from God.
 What if we get it right?
Through a grant by Compassion Kansas, administered through Wichita State University, we have
the privilege of learning about capacity building as a nonprofit. The steps in this process have
been several meetings to review where the Mission has been and the challenges ahead. The
knowledge gained from the meetings will be used to cast a clear direction for the next 1 to 5 years.

The purposes of the meetings are for strategic planning and to create a shared understanding of the
preferred future of the Salina Rescue Mission. This includes developing a set of issues to take
forward and to leave behind based on the past. In addition, we are brainstorming what the future
might look like for the Mission.

Core values were discussed and developed for funders, partners, staff, clients, board, and the
public. As part of the strategic action, twelve major themes emerged. From the twelve themes
participants agreed to look at these five areas: programs, staff, fundraising, facilities and public
awareness.

As we move forward, the board, staff and community partners have formulated their long-term
dreams for the Salina Rescue Mission. The next steps for the Board and stakeholders is to put
action steps to these ideas and implement them.

The U In Jesus

Before U were thought of or time had begun, The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew,
God stuck U in the name of His Son. and this word resUrrection is spelled with a U.
And each time U pray, you’ll see it’s true, When JesUs left earth at His upward ascension,
You can’t spell out JesUs and not include U. He felt there was one thing He just had to mention.
You’re a pretty big part of His wonderful name, “Go into the world and tell them it’s true
For U, He was born; that’s why He came. That I love them all -- Just like I love U.”
And His great love for U is the reason He died. So many great people are spelled with a U,
It even takes U to spell crUcified. Don’t they have a right to know JesUs too?
Isn’t it thrilling and splendidly grand It all depends now on what U will do,
He rose from the dead, with U in His plan? He’d like them to know, but it all starts with U.
