DEVELOPMENT OF

WIND-POWERED
GOPRO CAMERA
CHARGER ON A
HELMET
A RESEARCH PROPOSAL PRESENTED TO THE FACULTY OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, ADAMSON UNIVERSITY
MANILA, PHILIPPINES
INTRODUCTION

Wind power is one of the fastest-growing energy sources in the

world. It is more efficient alternative than to burning fossil fuels. It is
a renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas
emissions during operation, consumes no water, and uses little spaces.
An attempt has been made by the researchers to develop a
model by which wind energy can be used to charge GoPro cameras
while travelling using motorcycles. It can be easily used while
travelling where the GoPro camera and its charger were connected
on the top of the helmet.
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

The researchers formulated some questions that will serve as guidelines for the
methodology and gathering data as follows:

• For GoPro camera charging, how much should be the input voltage?
• How to convert this varying voltage to a constant 5V charging output?
• How long it will take to fully charge a GoPro camera?
• What are the advantages and disadvantages of this project?
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

• To utilize the force of nature, particularly wind as an alternative

source of power generation.

• To provide a wind power generating device that is very simple in

construction such that its maintenance could be easily done by any
individual.
• To introduce a new type of wind power generating device that
could be used in charging GoPro cameras that are placed on the
top of helmets that could be operated by any individual.

• Lastly, to minimize the usual usage of electricity at home just for

charging GoPro cameras.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION (OR DELIMITATION)

The application of this Wind-Powered GoPro Camera

Charger is limited to use while travelling using a motorcycles
or bicycles which the driver needs to wear helmet. This
project focuses on how a mini wind turbine produces wind
power that can charge a GoPro camera.
In the final defense, the project will be tested thru the
help of an electric fan with a single direction to determine if
this project is feasible in GoPro camera charging. Longer
charging time is expected in this project. The current is also
variable that depends on the movement of the turbine which
is then dependent on the speed of the wind striking it.
THEORETICAL/CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
In order to achieve the objectives of this study, the researchers make use of a
guide in a form of a research paradigm as shown below.

conducting the different experiment made.
The following materials will be used by researchers to
conduct the study:

• DC Motor
• Capacitor
• Voltage Regulator (LM7805)
• Blades
• Helmet
METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK
After gathering the materials, the next thing that the
researchers will do is making a mini wind turbine using the
DC motor and the blades of the fan. The researchers must
attach the blades of the fan to the DC motor so that when
wind energy is present the blades of the fan will turn the
motor resulting in producing electricity as the wind passes
by the blades of the fan.
After that the researchers will attach the mini wind turbine to a helmet. A
voltage regulator must be connected to the end of the motor.

Figure 3.1 Circuit to be used in 5 V voltage Regulator

The output in Figure 3.1 will be connected to the end of
the female USB, then will be attached to the helmet so that
you just connect the cord of your charger to the female USB,
charging your GoPro or any other device. After that the
researchers will conduct an experiment that will prove to be
able to charge the GoPro while riding a motorcycle.
INSTRUMENTATION
By using a voltmeter and ammeter, the researchers will
test the output of the mini wind turbine while riding the
motorcycle. For measuring, testing of prototype, gathering
of data and analyzing data of the proposed mini wind
turbine for helmet the prototype should brought to Adamson
University.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

To be able gather data, the researchers will conduct many

experiment riding the motorcycle, at what speed will the mini wind
turbine charge the GoPro and also what is voltage output when you
are riding at a slow pace. By analyzing the data gathered we can
now determine at what speed is the mini wind turbine will most likely
to charge the GoPro.
TREATMENT OF DATA
The data that the researchers will gather is from different testing of the
speed of the wind to charge a GoPro.
