1. There are 120 teachers.

Select a sample of 40 teachers by using the systematic sampling

technique
2. A researcher wants to select 35 people from a population of 150. How is she going to do it by
using the systematic sampling technique?
3. XYZ cable corporation employees 2500 people. If a random sample of 165 is taken from the
entire population by systematic sampling, what is the value of k?

PARAMETER and STATISTICS

Parameter – is a measure that describes a population. Denoted by Greek Letters

Examples of Parameter:

1. Population mean (m)

2. Population variance (𝑜 2 )
3. Population standard deviation (o)

Statistics – is a measure that describes a sample. Devoted by Roman letters

Examples of Statistics

1. Sample mean 𝑥̅
2. Sample variance 𝑠 2
3. Sample standard deviation s

POPULATION MEAN – is the mean of the entire population. It is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ)
∑𝑥
µ= 𝑁

where:

x = given data
N = population size

POPULATION VARIANCE AND POPULATION DEVATION

Variance and Standard Deviation – are widely used measure of dispersion of data in research

Population Variance 𝑜 2 – is the sum of the squared deviations of each datum from the
population mean µ divided by the population size N

Population Standard Deviation o – is the square root of the population variance 𝑜 2

Formulas:
∑(𝑥−µ)2
𝑜2 = 𝑁
N = population size
x = given data
µ = population mean
∑(𝑥−µ)2
o=√ 𝑁
