Annotated Bibliography

In order to construct an effective essay on immigration and criminal justice here at UTEP

I will first have to pick a strong research question. Then to kick off my research I will

find sources on the information I need to help support a valid answer to my research question. I

will need to research my major which is criminal justice and my topic which is immigration. Not

only that I will need to look for sources that relate these two topics to UTEP and how its effects

UTEP. I can find and interview scholars here at UTEP who deal with immigrants or people in the

criminal justice department. Interviews can act as strong sources to this research. After finding

quality sources I can create an answer to my research question.

Research Questions

What resources does UTEP have for illegal immigrants to become

residents/citizens?

How does immigration affect students in the criminal justice program?

According to Athanassakis, foreigners are a threat to our safety here in the U.S. Having

foreigners enter the U.S disables actual citizens to grow as a country and body. They bring

other languages, organizations, etc. that make citizens ideas unoriginal. Although some may

view this as a positive effect, most say Mexicans culture is ruining Americans. Mexican

immigrants are taking over our work force, habilitation, and learning environment. In order

for this to stop the U.S needs to enforce having stricter immigration laws this will help the

U.S expand on ideas and grow as originals.

Griffin, H., Woodward, V., & Sloan, J. (2016). The money and politics of criminal justice policy.

Durham, North Carolina: Carolina Academic Press.

According to Griffin, Woodward and Sloan, criminal justice policies are highly affected by

money and politics. People question on what should be the relationship be between criminal

justice policy and money and politics. Throughout the years this has been a problem to

many criminologists but yet it still hasn’t been fixed. Although there is no direct solution to

this problem we can only hope for the future to become better when it comes to policy and

politics. Money and politics has always had a huge role on criminal justice policy. Taking

this into consideration, how can the U.S solve the problem of illegal immigrants in a manner

that is nonviolent yet effective.

Immigration law — criminal justice and immigration enforcement — California limits local

entities' compliance with immigration and customs enforcement detainer requests. — trust

According to Harvard law review, Immigration and Custom Enforcement, Federal Bearu of

Investigation and Secure Community Programs work together to analyze secure identity

reports. This process helps see which people are illegal immigrants then gives the right to

detain these immigrants and possibly send them out of the U.S. These agencies limit the

amount of immigrants we have here in the U.S but are they doing their jobs accurately. Now

if these agencies are here to limit the amount of immigrants and the government spends so

much money into these programs why are most borderland populations consisted of

immigrants.

According to James, Border Patrol agents do their jobs up until a certain extent. The border

patrol is in charge of managing who and what crosses from borders, they claim once they

have crossed it is no longer their problem. Others say that the border patrol should be

enforcing the law on all immigrants whether or not they have already crossed. Now, we

understand that the border patrol agents are on the border but the U.S has other programs

that could help. Once border patrol is aware of their situation then they should alert other

programs or in other words call for backup. All custom enforcement programs should have

proper communication with each other. What should the border patrol be doing if they

absolutely want to decrease the amount of illegal immigration?

policy. International Review of Modern Sociology, 34(2), 279-293. Retrieved from http://0-

According to Light and Togunde, Mexican immigrants come into the U.S with both pros and

cons. Over the past years the amount of Mexican immigrants who have entered the U.S has

increased drastically. Some people argue that Mexicans are going to over populate the U.S.

Others say they are going to make the U.S better. People are still deciding which way would

be better. Taking all the pros and cons into consideration there is still other alternatives into

helping illegal immigrants rather than them being punished, Mexican immigrants change the

U.S whether it is positive or negative.

According to Slack and Harvey, the University of Texas at El Paso has a program called the

immigration and border community. This program helps students actively learn about

conflicts that might occur in borderland communities. Since El Paso is a borderland

community this educates a plethora of students at UTEP. Not only is it educating students on

immigration problems but it is making them activist to help in this topic. This source helped

me gain more information on how UTEP interacts with immigration problems on campus.

According to Wiebel, the U.S government should be managing immigrants before they enter the

U.S instead of having a difficult situation to handle once they enter. Immigration has become a

huge problem here in the U.S, especially in borderland communities. Instead of having to punish

these immigrants once they have already entered the U.S we should be advocating towards

preventing illegal immigrants from entering in the first place.
