Associated Learning Standard(s): The resource may be generally applicable, if so, simply state that. List
any ISTE-S standards that seem to naturally align with the selected resource.
I believe that this tool is fairly widely useful in the classroom and can be applied to basically any
content area and standard. I think it would be most useful in an English classroom when students
are mapping stories or in connecting unrelated ideas in other content areas. Below are the
applicable ISTE standards for students:
1. Creative Communicator: Students communicate clearly and express themselves
creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital
media appropriate to their goals.
a. Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired
objectives of their creation or communication.
b. Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using
a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.
2. Global Collaborator: Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich
their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and
globally.
a. Students use collaborative technologies to work with others, including peers,
experts or community members, to examine issues and problems from multiple
viewpoints.
b. Students contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and
responsibilities to work effectively toward a common goal.
Resource Description
Give a brief description of the technology/resource.
Popplet gives students and teachers a way to electronically create mind maps. It’s fairly easy to
use and allows students to collaborate on their maps. To create a map, students simply log into
the website and click create map. From there, they double-click anywhere on their screen to add
a central “popple.” You can then extend the map in any of the four directions (and later move
new popples around the screen to be in any direction). Each popple can be embedded with
content from Facebook, Amazon, Flikr, Youtube, or anything directly uploaded from the user’s
computer.

Integration/Implementation Idea - Screencasting

How might you use this resource to promote student learning? Describe who will be doing the
screencasting – you or your students, and what purpose it will serve.
I think this tool could be extremely useful in creating an overarching mind map throughout a
given semester. I had a class a couple of semesters ago that required that we kept an updated
mind map of each of the topics that we discussed in class, which really helped me connect the
content in ways that I don’t know that I would have otherwise. For a similar assignment, I would
have students create a Popplet account and work in groups to create weekly mind maps of what
we were studying in class. Each week, I would have either a student or a group of students
synthesize what we’d done that week and add it to a class Popplet. That way, by the end of the
year, students would have a completed mind map of everything we’d studied. They could later
reference it if they needed to, since Popplets are always stored under the same link.

Value-Added Explanation
 Given the information above, how would the technology integration you described,
using the selected resource? (On the “Value-Added Rating Scale” above)
 Explain your rating based on the indicators on the rubric.
I would give my proposed integration idea a 2 or 3. I think depending on the content area and
how much it is used in the classroom, having a mind map of topics covered created by students
both for use in class and once the class is over could be really impactful and helpful to students. I
think that assigning particular weeks to individual or small groups of students makes it a little
easier on everyone and helps students who maybe don’t understand a certain topic get a new
explanation of it. I don’t know that the lessons throughout the year would be impossible or even
incredibly difficult without this tool, but I do think that it could transform the course and help
students get a wider understanding of the math they’re learning.
