‘You have to dream before your dreams can come true’

The mornings are splendid when NEWS of the world comes knocking right at our desk
in bright crisp paper which helps us to broaden our horizons of thought process and
eventually helps us to evaluate how much bright the future of defence of India in general
and BrahMos in particular is. What I am trying to bring to the fore is the fact that back in
1900s some great men would have dreamt abt present India at that time. That's the
power of a dream.

During my childhood days, while going through the pages of my social science books it
was one thing that disappointed me every time about Indian independence.A thought
that I missed the time when our nation became independent at the stroke of midnight
and could not witness the euphoria at that time. All I aspired was to meet the great men
of those times who helped me breathe under this open sky .

Back in 2010 that changed when I met this greatest personality of our times who still
inspires our generation. Well, some would have gussed who I am talking about and for
others I will put forward certain clues for you to guess.

He was not only awarded 40 honorary doctorate degree from worldwide universities but
was also MTV Youth icon for 2 years.

India celebrates National Students day on his birthday as a mark of respect toward him.

Switzerland celebrates National Science day as mark of respect for this great man of
our time.

He rose to such heights from an economic slumber that we have named island after
him.

When he was kid, he used to sell newspapers at the railway stations after his school so
that his family could have a two course meal.

I believe many of you would have guess by now who this great personality is , but for
those who are still in doubts I would like to quote his reply to a question ‘whether he
would like to be called a teacher or scientist or president ?’ and he replied ‘ I would like
to be remembered as teacher first than any other person’. Yes he is APJ Aabdul Kalam.
A short statured old man with long custom ear covering wooly grey hair who would steal
the attention of any gathering with his small steped walk across the hall and a persistent
smile on the face.

If our freedom fighters got us this free air to breathe, his actions transformed the worldly
perception about India from a 3rd world food deficient money seeking nation to a full-
fledged nuclear defense state. 13 May 1998 , the tests were conducted at Pokhran but
tremors were felt wide across west. The world woke up to a New India that would, in
coming decades, define global geopolitics to a certain scale. Post-completion of the
tests, yet again he disappeared into oblivion in his march towards achieving new
horizons for the country. He secretly gave birth to an idea which shook the world 2 nd
time with a thunderous roar into the sky with the launch of supersonic cruise missile
BrahMos from Indian waters on 12 June 2001. The sky was painted with Indain tricolour
by the fiery plumes of BrahMos and every Indian looked up with a pride that was
unparalleled. The world has not even digested India being a Nuclear sate , he gave
them a new fear to live with i.e. India being the bearer of Supersonic. Missile system.
He kept the enemies brooding because he was the one who always belived that:

‘Unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. In this world, fear has no place.
Only strength respects strength.’

It was not just the scientist in him that we loved, but it was more of his ability to inspire
the young generation with his innocent charm and his perception towards simple livimg.
Like other famous personalities, he always christened the idea to tirelessly and
relentless work towards achievement of our goals but what differentiates him from
others is his underpinning towards the fact that our path towards our goal must not tread
across the paths of someone else dreams. He actually perpetuated thoughts that are
rational, scientific and yet ethical.

So how can we mark our respect for this great-man of our time? I believe building
memorials in his name or renaming streets / islands, pinning his framed photos on walls
can never do justice to the level of his contributions to our nation and to our society.
Well, the answer to this question, I will leave for you to ponder upon and ask for yourself
that have you been truthful to this nation in all your decisions, official /personal,
throughout your life. If the answer comes Yes than that is the best homage to this wooly
haired sage of technological era.
