Depth and Hydrostatic Pressure

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure exerted by a liquid due to the force of gravity and can be calculated using an equation that considers the liquid's density, acceleration due to gravity, and depth. The pressure increases with increasing depth due to the weight of the liquid above pressing down, so hydrostatic pressure is directly proportional to depth.

Hydrostatic Pressure

Depth and hydrostatic pressure

Hydrostatic pressure in a liquid can be calculated using the following equation:

p=ρgh (1)

where

p = pressure in fluid (N/m2, Pa, lbf/ft2, psf)

ρ = density of liquid (kg/m3, slugs/ft3)

g = acceleration of gravity (9.81 m/s2, 32.17405 ft/s2)

h = height of fluid column, or depth in the fluid at which the pressure is measured (m, ft)
