IT’S US
The Triumphant Platform
The steps we took along our way was filled with the interest of becoming a light to someone’s
darkness. We all knew that the very first step to success is to become interested in what we
do. Who we are today began with what we did throughout the previous Leoistic year. After
receiving the highest possible appreciation as a Leo club in Sri Lanka we realized that the
real measure of achievements is not winning awards, but to do something you believe
worthwhile and if our efforts are worth to be awarded then it will lie on our way.
Another splendid year of UoM Leos has come to end by giving our hands to serve and our
hearts to love, while winning numerous awards both from Multiple level and District level.

Recapturing a Remarkable Year
Heart beat
It was a continuous effort of the UoM Leos which
extended into multiple phases. The project included
with different sub categories such as awareness
programs on cancer and diabetes, leadership and
motivation programs for school students, parental
awareness sessions, donation of tents as a temporary
solution for the damaged roofs in a school building
under the name “shade for hope” and donation of
mosquito nets to Hiniduma Hospital etc. The project
series was based on schools in the rural areas.
Mathematics seminars for the students who were
going to face the O/L examination was another
session done under the project. All the phases of the
project “Heart Beat” was extended to two or more
days. A musical program “Sarigamata Aruthak” was
also initiated together with the students in the
schools as an evening entertaining session. It was a
successful project series which addressed many
communities by holding multiple number of
different sessions.

Sihinayata piyapath
“The whole purpose of Education is to turn mirrors into
windows”. Quality education will turn the empty minds
into open minds, which will ready to grab a learning from
everything happening around. If someone is travelling
through the successive path of education overcoming all
the challenges which came on their way, they will be the
best to be the beacon of light to another one’s darkness.
They will be the perfect guidance which one can receive
to bloom themselves as it meant to be. UoM Leos is always
willing to help somebody to rise through gifting the
education they received once. “Sihinayata Piyapath” is
such an attempt carried out throughout the year as a
continuous effort, holding a series of Mathematics
seminars for the students facing the O/L examination.
Apart from enhancing the mathematical knowledge UoM
Leos were able to motivate them to win the challenges of
life which they are facing today. We were able to plant the
thought in the minds of the students that the life will be
different from what it is now once they educate themselves.
By conducting the project series, we realized that the true
happiness can only be found by helping others to find it.

DaVinci
Painting or an art is a language which
speaks once the words are unable to
explain. It is a mode of education for
the children to trust their ideas and to
explore themselves more. Children
who refuses to put down their crayons
will be the artists which the world will
embrace one day. To evoke the artist
within every child is a responsibility of
every adult should uphold, without
distracting their creativity. DaVinci is
an art competition organized for the
students who are having difficulties in
hearing in Rathmalana Deaf and Blind
School. It was held on 14h of February
2018 from 4 pm onwards. UoM Leos
joined with Leo clubs of Piliyandala,
Baddegama, Maththegoda and
Polgasovita to organize the events.
We together took a small step to color
up their day by making pleasant
memories in their innocent little
hearts.

Leo Padura 2018

Music is divine, a strongest form of magic
which consoles everyone, goes straight to the
heart along the ears where dancing is a poem
of which each movement is a word. Together
music and dancing cure things which
medication never will. Having known as a
technical University most of the people
believes that the undergraduates of University
of Moratuwa does not possess the aesthetic
abilities. But among the limitless capabilities
there is an aesthetician within every
undergraduate where they need only a
platform to showcase those hidden talents.
“Leo Padura- 2018” was organized by the Leo
club of University of Moratuwa to create the
so called platform, to create magic. Together
with the talents of UoM Leos it became a stage
for the talents of fellow Leos in other Leo
Clubs. We believe that the good music which
was heard on 28th January 2018, was able to
spread the magic in them to everyone who
witnessed.

Navigation
A ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not
what ships are built for. Navigating
through the storms in the very dark
corners of the sea, being competitive with
the waves which tries to sink the ship is
what a sailor supposed to do. Similarly, in
the sea of life leaders are meant to know
the way and show the way to the others
where they could win upon the storms
they face. Navigation is a leadership camp
organized by the UoM Leos conducted on
20th and 21st of January for the students
of Wp/Mt Halwala C.W.W. Kannangara
Maha Vidyalaya. The two successful days
were spent with seminars under the
themes of sex education and drug
prevention, leadership development
activities, hike and adventurous events on
the top of the mountain, camp fire and
gift awarding session. It became another
remarkable and valuable opportunity for
the little fellows to learn how to navigate
themselves as leaders through the storms
of their lives.

Akurata eliyak
One of the sacred secrets of life is that all that is really
worth the doing is what we do for others. It may be a
simple kind gesture, but the value it beholds is worth
its weight in gold. There are so many schools in Sri
Lanka which needs the attention of everyone and the
support to uplift. The innocent children who are
educating in them may not have the basic facilities
which a school should have. UoM Leos always curious
in finding such places which needs the support the
most and helping them within their capabilities.
Batuwangala Central College, Neluwa which was
affected from flood was one such place which took
the attention of us. UoM Leos joined hands with the
Lions club of Dehiwala North to fulfill the necessity of
equipment to the computer lab having shortages.
We were able to donate about 5 lakh worth school
accessories including photocopy machines and
instruments for the aesthetic unit and the Leos and
prospects who went their repaired the sound system
and installed the computer lab equipment of the
school. The perseverance and the true hearts of the
Leos of UoM proved that many things are attainable
even it seems is hard.

UoM Leos Odyssey so far...
We, UoM Leos are a family of young spirits eager to experience both leadership and fellowship in each and
every opportunity we are going through, while becoming an aid to whoever needed, with our service
towards the society. At the end of another year of perfection, if we look back at the path we came so far, it
would showcase that, the exemplary journey followed by our past club members since the very first day of
the club, has built this imperial legend of eminence highlighting our presence in Sri Lankan Leo History. At
the moment of delegating the helm of the voyage, Leo Club of University of Moratuwa, to another set of
fellow young souls, to continue navigating legendary chapters ahead in Leoism, let’s have a quick glance
at our roots we emerged from.
The inception of Leoism in the history of University of Moratuwa lies back to the year 2003. The first chapter
in UoM Leos’ history was written in the Leostic Year 2003/04, under the presidency of Leo Nadun
Gunawardena. With the commitment of the own club members and the support and guidance of other
fellow Leos and Lions in the district, UoM Leos emerged as a leading club in the district during the years of
2003/04 and 2004/05 even through many barriers and hardships.
The Leostic year 2005/06 is a remarkable milestone in UoM Leo history, as for the very first time, the Leo
Club of University of Moratuwa was appreciated as the ‘Most Outstanding Club in Leo District 306 A2’. The
path to this achievement was accomplished by the excellent presidency of Leo Tharanga Gunasekara who
was the club president of that year. He also brought the glory of the ‘Most Outstanding Club President’
within the same year. Him, being titled as the ‘Leo of the Year’ within the Leostic Year 2006/07, further
proves his commitment towards Leoism and the eminence we achieved with him. For the next three
consecutive years from 2007/08 to 2009/10, we the UoM Leos were lucky enough to bring the honor of the
‘Most Outstanding Leo Club in Leo District 306 A2’ back home. Meanwhile, Leo Isuru Senadheera made
UoM Leos further proud by being the ‘Leo of the Year’ in the Leostic Year 2008/09.
Year by year, UoM Leos moved towards the excellence with the commitment, spirit and the keenness of the
fellow members in the club and became the ‘Most Outstanding Club of the Multiple 306’ in the Leostic year
2011/12 under the presidency of Leo Naveen Lamahewa, making it yet another perfect milestone in UoM
Leo history. Back again in Leostic year 2012/13, Club President Leo Chathuranga Gunasekara and his fellow
club members brought the fame of ‘Most Outstanding Club in Leo District 306 A2’ to UoM Leos’ family
together with the appreciation of the ‘Most Outstanding Club President’. For the very first time in UoM Leo
history, a Leo from UoM family became the District President for the District 306A2 and that honor was
brought by Leo Isuru Senadheera.
Once again in the Leostic year 2013/14, the commitment of UoM Leos was entitled as the ‘Most Outstanding
Club of the Multiple 306’ and that was achieved under the excellent presidency of Leo Ajith Ranaweera and
his crew while Leo Kasun Geeganage doubled the glory of the club by being awarded as the ‘Most
Outstanding Club Secretary’ in the same year.
‘Most Outstanding Club of the Multiple 306’, ‘Most Outstanding Club Secretary’, ‘Most Outstanding Club
Treasurer’ and ‘Most Outstanding Club Advisor for Leos’ were some of the remarkable titles added to UoM
Leo history on behalf of the successful completion of the Leostic year 2015/16. Also in the year 2016/2017,
UoM Leos achieved further more titles as the ‘Most Outstanding University Leo Club’, ‘Most Outstanding
Club Secretary’, and ‘Most Outstanding Bulletin Editor‘ of the year.
In the year we just completed, the capacity of UoM Leos were further highlighted, and raised the club to its
peak by awarding it again as the ‘Most Outstanding Club of the Multiple 306 Sri Lanka’. Further the ‘Most
Outstanding Club Vice President ’, ‘Most Outstanding Club Treasurer’ and ‘Most Outstanding Bulletin Editor’
of the year, were also emerged from the UoM Leo Family.
We have done a lot so far and yet has the capacity to do more. Stay with us as always, and let’s continue the
imperial legend of eminence together.

Message from the President

Winning doesn’t always mean “being first”, winning means that you
are doing better than you have done before.
Every moment I spent in this wonderful Leo family gave me an
immense happiness which cannot be gained through any other thing,
at the same time this gave me the courage to overcome difficulties,
knowledge about leadership qualities which cannot be gained through
any workshop, and a great experience of dealing with different kind of
people. During this period at Leo club of University of Moratuwa, I
have seen a better development in the club due to the increase of many
innovative ideas and the talents of the club members.
With those innovative ideas and talents, it’s the time to begin the new
era under the new president who is an outstanding Leo with great
characteristics and popularity in the leolism. Club executives and
Leo Buddhi Isurujith panel teams consist of well talented leos with innovative ideas will be
the ones’ who will brighten the “UOM LEO” as a brand name while
serving the society at their best. With the help of past great leo leaders
who were born in this greatest club, I wish you all a good time in
Leolism.

Message from the Secretary

I’m very pleased to say that we’ve been awarded as the most
outstanding club in the Leoistic year 2017/2018. As the former
secretary I’m pretty contended about our achievements. It is the
hard work of all the Leos and prospects which created this fruitful
outcome. Special Leo memories were written in the recent history
with the number of innovative, leadership and multiservice projects
launched island wide. It is very well satisfying to be the reason
behind somebody’s smile. It is undoubtedly the year which we had
a lot of unforgettable experiences and a plenty of beautiful
memories. Upcoming Leoistic year 2018/2019 should be the time to
rectify the past mistakes in order to make the year brighter than
before. I know all the newly elected team possess enough strength
and the courage to make it a success. “UoM Leos!” let’s roar again...
Leo Devini Shashiprabha
Love you all...

Message from the Treasurer

“It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not
care who gets the credit.”

The journey of the family of Leos is realizing a dream through a

collective team commitment. The innovative and diversified
projects, the collective hands of every leo made our journey more
happening in the past year. The spirit we get through the join hands
of past leos and the present members is a massive strength to
continue the successful story ahead. The success of our journey
enhance with the commitment of every single individual and we
have achieved it as a team. But the most valuable opportunities are
yet to come and the doors are open for the next generation to
witness the new change with new hands.
So a new era has begun with a great leadership and with creative
hands. So it is your responsibility to continue the story while serving
Leo Hasitha Jayanath
the society and keeping the leo spirit ahead. The new team will
surely make a step forward to carry the journey with their fresh spirit
and I wish the Mora Leos will make a great time with the challenging
minds and keep the glory for the future. The success is within you
and it should be bought by you for the betterment of others. So I
wish you may have all the courage and wisdom to build up a new
era for the Mora Leos.

Message from the Vice President

It is a great pleasure to issue this message as the upcoming president
of the Leo Club of University of Moratuwa. Being a Leo of the Leo
Club of University of Moratuwa and of the Leo district 306A2 has
been life changing for me. Starting out as a small group with lots of
brothers and sisters to guide, it has truly transformed into one big
family. Being a group of engineering undergraduates we focus on
volunteering to help those in need. In addition to all the enjoyment
and self-satisfaction we get from volunteering in social service
activities we gain Leadership, Experience and Opportunities as well.
I am sure that everyone who were involved in the club proceedings
enjoyed the Leoistic year in the same way as I did. Last year was
definitely a huge success as it was clear from the numerous awards
that we received in the Annual District and Multiple Conferences.
We have become the Most Outstanding Leo Club of Leo District
Leo Kasun Ramanayaka
306A2 as well as the Most Outstanding Leo Club of Sri Lanka for the
year 2017/2018.
I take this opportunity to convey my gratitude to our advisor Lion
Meena Wellala for her corporation and immense effort to uplift our
club. Furthermore, I would also like to thank all past UoM Leo leaders
who always guided us in times of difficulty.
Finally, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all Leos and non-Leos who
have contributed in all ways for the success of our club. I hope you
all will join in the upcoming projects as well.
Thank you all for your contribution to Leoism.

Happiness???
We all like to be happy. Despite of humans or animals none of us want to be sad. Where we can find this
happiness??? When thinking about it, people are doing all sort of things to find happiness. This is where
we all went wrong. Happiness is not something we can find like finding a treasure. It is something that we
should create by ourselves. In fact, most of people ruin lots of nearby chances to be happy when they try
to find happiness in elsewhere. Finding happiness in that way is just like chasing after a mirage. No matter
how hard we try we can never achieve it. It just goes away from us.

To be clear, let’s take a simple story. There was a man and he was the only breadwinner of the family. So he
worked hard to earn money. His only goal was that. He thought he could make himself and his family
happy just by earning huge amount of money. So he decided to go aboard although he could afford his
family-expenses by salary he got by then. He worked so hard in overseas, he never went out with his friends
at work, sometimes he didn’t have time to call his family and he hardly came to see them just to save
money that goes for plane tickets. Years passed by and when he got older he had to return to Sri Lanka.
When he came, he realized that he has missed lots of things in his life. His parents have passed away. He has
missed the chance of looking after them. His children have grown up without him. To them, he is just like a
stranger. He was not there when they need father’s love; to pat them till they fall asleep, to teach them how
to ride a bicycle, to go on a trip in their vacations. His children and his wife barely had happy moments with
him. All the things he has done, he did it to be happy. But at the end he hasn’t spend a single moment of
happiness.
Having an aim for life, working hard to achieve it, is not a bad thing at all and it is a must. But we should not
forget to be happy in between. There is no level that you should pass to achieve happiness, it is something
that you can keep within you all the time. You don’t need money, beauty, power or anything to be happy.
There are lots of tiny little things around you which can make you happy. Just take a look at them. Spend
time with your family, go out with friends, instead of being in cyber-world through your smart phones or
laptops all the time, witness your real life. You’ll see how beautiful your life is.

Editors Note -Leo Chamindi Jayaweera-
Another chapter of UoM Leos unfolded, marking the excellence as the Most Outstanding Leo Club in
Sri Lanka. New squad of young enthusiastic leaders are ready to shield the excellence earned in the
previous year. As the chief editor I am honored to end the chapter with the final note of mine in the
special edition of our official newsletter “IT’S US” , passing the glory to continue in the upcoming
year.
The sparks we created throughout the year for the darkest days, was the only happiness we needed,
and they were the motivation for us to do more. A small act of kindness turned into valuable memories
to be cherished throughout our endless journey. The untiring efforts of the UoM Leos led the way to
the brilliance at the winning stage. The recognitions we earned will be the driving force for the us to
serve more in the future endeavors.
“IT’S US” always shouldered the responsibility of inscribing the strides we take in our journey.
Sometimes all the words in the world may not be enough to express the feeling of serving humanity.
But as the editorial pillar we strived hard to convey the feeling to the readers, hoping anyone who
reads will follow the path of serving the world with willing hearts. The newsletter showcased not only
the projects we engaged but the creativity of the editors, who held the responsibility to pass on the
essence of the good deeds we did to the community. By becoming the “Most Outstanding Bulletin
Editorial Pillar” in Sri Lanka once again we proved that the potential of the team is exceptionally
extreme.
We believe that there are no limits for what we can accomplish, except the limit we place on our own
thinking. Success is determined by the love of what we do and the hard work and sacrifices which we
are willing to pay. The spirit of UoM Leos will remain unwavering and hope you all stay with us to
read and witness the eminence in the future.
