It is a great pleasure to address you in the third edition of the ITS US as the newly appointed Vice President. At the beginning it was really a challenging task for me to take the vice presidency of a well reputed club in Sri Lanka. That is a huge opportunity for my life and it is one of the great milestones in my life. I learnt so many good things from the Leoistic vision. Everything has a passion and pattern to happen. I got Lots of experiences from the Leo vision. Planning & conducting various kinds of projects while giving our maximum contribution to 306 A2 family as well as to the multiple was not really an easy task. Meanwhile as university students we have to balance our academic lives with all the extra-curricular activities. All the time I have to help to my clubs president. The president guides us to the correct direction every time. In my point of view I will briefly describe about what is Leoism and definition of a Leo club. Leoism Leoism is a movement to generate good qualities among the youths and to make them responsive to good social needs so that they can provide the nation with perfect leadership. Leos have put on records many instances of dedicatory services for the cause of distressed humanity. It is believed and hoped that the Leos will uphold their tradition of services through fellowship and friendship. Leos are an institution of hope to the helpless and will be round the clock. Definition of Leo Club Leo Club is an official program of the international association of Lions club to promote and encourage service activities among the youths of the community, to serve others in the community and around the world that will develop leadership quality. Every Leo club formed must be sponsored by Lions club. I request from you all to share this newsletter among your friends and spread the Leoism all over the country. From that we can help to create this country a better place. Thank you.

Are You QualiFied?

If you see me for the first time, how would you see me? It will depend on the situation as people say first impression is the last impression. In other words you will simply judge people. But are you qualified? to judge others. Why do we judge people? We like to label others. We like to put them into boxes. Judging makes us feel safe and comfortable because we have defined a person. So we can easily act according to that definition. You see a boy and think hes lame. But he has to work every night to take care of his mom and dad. You call a girl fat. She has a disease and shes starving herself. Theres a friend of yours whos smiling all the day along helping each and everyone of you. But he is going through hardships which you can never imagine of. Did you know any of these back stories? No. You just saw and judged. Next time when you see a different person, who doesnt fit within your framework, please, dont label him. Dont put him into that box of yours. If you really feel that you want to know that person, try to walk in his or her shoes along the same paths they travel. Then you will know how to accept him or her. Then only, you are qualified. Do we stop only by judging others? No. We judge ourselves as well. When you get a brilliant idea, you think how you can achieve it, how you enjoy that glorious moment of achievement. But when you are about to put it into action, theres this feeling or scream from the depth of your mind, are you sure? Will this work? You remember all those failures where you fell on your face. You have begun it. You are judging yourself. Are you qualified? No. When you were a child, if you wanted to do something, you simply did it. You didnt judge yourself. If you wanted to climb a tree, you climbed it. You werent afraid that you would fall and get hurt. You simply made it. But now, you are afraid of falling and getting hurt, even before you climb the tree. Judgement grows, as we grow. But we should watch our judging minds. Dont judge, be curious and open. Be creative and believe. Then you are qualified.

LIGHT A CANDLE TO LIGHT THE WORLD

Although the students in rural schools are having the talent and the resources, they are weak in mathematics due to the lack of their interest towards the subject. To make these students interested in the subject and arouse their curiosity to learn the subject keenly a project was organized by the Leo club of university of Moratuwa on 23rd of September in Deiyandara National School.

With the idea of Failing to plan is planning to fail first there was a lecture on how to plan the life. The relation between mathematics and the nature is shown and mathematics was taught using fun games. This aroused the curiosity of the students and they were motivated to learn mathematics.Practical mathematical question papers were provided and students were inspired for learning mathematics further to enter an engineering faculty.

The principal and the teachers gave the maximum support to do this and about 250 students have participated. With the presence of about 15 Leos and prospects the project was successful.
