Jesus is Good!
Greetings Tennessee Valley District!

I witness to you today that God is stirring hearts and planting visions in our midst! Jesus is good!

In September, I have preached at Knoxville Central, at a combined service of Norris and Sinking Springs, at
the Wesley Foundation, and at Jonesville and Oliver Springs. People are excited about Jesus! I have read of
new ministries beginning, of offerings and flood buckets and health kits being prepared. I have seen strangers
welcomed. I have heard folks tell stories of what is happening in their congregations. God is good! I have
met with struggling churches and thriving churches - and in every instance, Jesus was with us!

Soon Charge Conferences will begin. You have been asked to remember...to notice...when the very goodness
of Jesus overwhelmed your gatherings or your ministries. I cannot wait to hear those who will bear witness
that God is stirring hearts and planting visions!

A part of preparing for Charge Conference is budget time. I must admit that tales of scarcity abound during
these months...and I always wonder if we realize that God is listening...the God of extravagance is listening.
Somehow it seems that praising God for enough is more truthful than spreading tales of woe. I was recently
inspired by the words of the hymn: “God of the Ages.”

Forgive our wavering trust in thee,

Our wild alarms, our trembling fears;
In thy strong hand eternally
Rests the unfolding of the years.
Though there be dark, uncharted space,
With worlds on worlds beyond our sight,
Still may we trust thy love and grace,
and wait thy word, Let there be light.

 CARDER TO DISCUSS POVERTY,
RAISE MONEY FOR WESLEY HOUSE SCHOLARSHIPS
Bishop Ken Carder is an authority on eco-
nomic justice and has long ministered to
those who live in poverty. His deep com-
mitment to this work not only comes from
his understanding of God’s call to serve
the “least of these,” but from his own
story of growing up in poverty. That up-
bringing shaped his personhood and led
him to develop a commitment to those
whom society relegates to the margins –
the poor, the vulnerable, and powerless.

On October 16th Bishop Carder, who

served Oak Ridge, Concord, and Church
Street United Methodist Churches prior to
being elected bishop in 1992, will tell his
story and relate it to Jesus’ instruction to
serve the poor. The event will be from
6:00 to 7:30 PM at Concord UMC,
11020 Roane Drive, Knoxville, TN.

Dinner will be served, and proceeds bene-

fit the Wesley House Community Center
scholarship fund.

neighborhoods. Its programs focus on

provide students a safe place to learn,
play, and growth in Christian faith.

Tuition of less than $20 per week is

charged to families but some cannot af-

the high-quality programing regardless of

Looking to the Future:

The Black Methodist Church 50 Years after Unification

2018 marks the 50-year anniversary of the vote by the UM General Conference of 1968 to begin the unification
process creating the United Methodist Church. Quite a bold claim it was at that time to state that one equitable
and inclusive church could be created from such disparate parts-many of which were separated by and because of
race. Attainment of this goal remains elusive even today…50 years later.

Recalling the words of Rev. Antoine “Tony” Love, BMCR vice chair at a recent gathering: "We give thanks for the past
50 years … but God is declaring there is a next level in our future…" What is that next level for black churches and
black people in the Holston Annual Conference?

In this workshop, we will take an honest look at this question for ourselves as we delve into the origins and structures
of the Methodist denominations of our past. We also will confront the current realities of black churches and black
people in the United Methodist Church. And we will be in dialogue about ways to address the challenging work yet
undone to create that “one equitable and inclusive church” called for by the General Conference in 1968.

Central UMC Knoxville is searching for a Director of

Children and Youth Ministries. This role plans and
directs a dynamic and exciting program to promote spir-
itual growth for children and youth from birth through
high school which incorporates Christian education, wor-
ship, music, mission, recreation, and family activities.
The director works as a member of the paid staff and
with the lay leadership team to fulfill the mission and
vision of Central UMC.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: recruiting
and supervising staff and volunteers for children and
youth ministry needs; developing programs, curriculum,
and events; ensure appropriate communication with
church congregation and families; planning and supervis-
ing youth retreats and mission trips; develop nurturing
relationships with children, youth, and parents. For full
