RCSEd International Surgical Fellowship Programme (RISFP)

Trainee Eligibility Criteria

Trainees applying for the programme:


a) must not be resident in the UK/EU/EEA at the time of application and not in receipt of any
provisions relating to UK/EU/EEA nationality;
b) have obtained a primary medical qualification acceptable to the UK General Medical Council (“the
GMC”);
c) have obtained an acceptable postgraduate qualification, the examination for which must have
included a clinical assessment, for example;

i. MRCS
ii. Australasia – SET 3 and above of a specialty programme working towards the
Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
iii. Canada – Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
iv. Egypt – MS, MSc, MChOrth
v. India – Diplomate of National Board (DNB)
vi. Malaysia – MS
vii. Nigeria and Ghana – Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons
viii. Pakistan – Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan
ix. Sri Lanka – MS
x. USA – Specialty Certificate from American Boards of Surgery

d) have achieved a pass in the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing
System to an overall score of 7.5, with a minimum score of 7.0 in all four modules (if required);
e) have completed basic training in their country of origin and have completed at least one year of
specialty practice, at the point of application;
f) have been in clinical surgical practice for three out of the last five years, including the most recent
twelve months immediately prior to seeking registration with the GMC*; and
g) have provided the GMC and the College with a certificate of good standing (CGS) from the
regulatory body in the country/countries where they have practised in the last 5 years before
application or since qualifying as a doctor if less than 5 years*. This must confirm that:

i. they are entitled to practise medicine in the relevant country;


ii. they have not at any stage been disqualified, suspended or prohibited from
practising medicine; and
iii. that the regulatory authority is not aware of any matters that raise doubts about
their good standing. Please note that the GMC requires a CGS that is no more than 3
months old.
and that he/she has provided the College with originals or certified copies of all the documentation and
materials it has requested in order to evidence his/her eligibility.
