Intertextuality

Intertextuality refers to creating one text by referencing another through borrowing elements like dance moves, characters, or plots. This can create layers of meaning and is used widely across media like books, music, films and television. There are several types of intertextual references including pastiche which imitates genres in a lighthearted way, parody which ridiculously mimics another's style, nostalgia which longs for the past, and homage which pays tribute to admire someone or something.
