Back in 1246, the uncle to King Henry III’s wife built a

palace on a stretch of land given to him by the King.
The land lay between the Strand and the Thames,
and the grand building was called the Savoy Palace,
after its creator, Peter, Count of Savoy.

A HOTEL OF ‘FIRSTS’
The first true luxury hotel in London, The Savoy was

the first to be lit by electricity. It also had the first electric
lifts, known as ‘ascending rooms’. In a time before
phones, guest rooms were connected by speaking
tubes to the valet, maid and floor waiter – and to other
parts of the hotel. Later on, The Savoy became the
first hotel to provide most of its rooms with private
bathrooms en-suite. The ‘Savoy bathroom’ became
famous for its cascading shower and ‘quick-filling bath’.

Located to the left of the American Bar, The Savoy

Museum features showcases and photography
displays illustrating the hotel’s celebrated history.
Highlights include a first edition of Harry Craddock’s

Savoy Cocktail Book, Noel Coward’s lighter and
cigarette case – and Marlene Dietrich’s guest card,
showing her request that 12 pink roses and a bottle
of Dom Perignon be in her room on her arrival. The
Savoy Museum, with its own bar area, can be hired
as a unique location for guests to enjoy a cocktail
among the archives.

The Savoy unveiled a brand new suite on the riverside

of the sixth floor in 2016. Open and light-filled, the layout
of The Savoy Suite exaggerates the unrivalled views
of the River Thames and iconic London landmarks,
stretching from Westminster and the Houses of
Parliament, incorporating Big Ben and the London Eye,
and all the way along to the City and Canary Wharf. It
was this same spectacular view that inspired Claude
Monet to paint his famous series of London bridges as
he resided in this same suite for the first of three lengthy
stays at The Savoy between 1899 and 1901.

The American Bar is the longest surviving cocktail bar

in London and one of the most renowned in the world.
Serving classics with a twist, new and vintage creations

and legendary bartender’s signature drinks – like Harry
Craddock’s famous White Lady – the American Bar
remains at the forefront of the industry, recently winning
Best International Bar Team 2016 at Tales of the
Cocktail, and Best Bar in Europe (second in the world)
at World’s 50 Best Bars 2016.
The bar features a live pianist seven days a week,

playing (of course) American Jazz.

The Thames Foyer is very much the heart of The Savoy.

A stunning glass dome floods this sociable spot with
wonderful natural light – and beneath this, a pianist
serenades guests from a winter garden gazebo, as they
enjoy our world-famous afternoon tea. Typical exquisite
handmade cakes and pastries include Opera, a dark
chocolate and pistachio truffle cake, and a Melba and
Bourbon vanilla tartlet, inspired by Escoffier’s original
Pêches Melba recipe. In creating these confectionary
marvels, the pastry chefs will use around three tonnes
of Valrhona chocolate each year. Breakfast and informal
all-day dining menus are also available, along with a
dessert and cocktail pairing experience in the evenings.
Live jazz entertains guests on Friday evenings.

The Beaufort Bar exudes unashamedly theatrical

glamour. In an Art Deco interior of jet-black and
burnished gold décor, the bar is all about cocktails that
push the boundaries. It also offers one of London’s
most extensive choices of champagne by the glass
and by the bottle, including rare vintages from Louis
Roederer and Cristal.
The bar itself stands on the hotel’s former cabaret

stage, which was graced by such luminaries as Carol
Gibbons, the Savoy Orpheans and George Gershwin.
This tradition is continued by nightly live entertainment,
as well as monthly evenings of Cabaret and Burlesque.

THE-STRAND
For a true taste of all that’s best in British cuisine,

there’s no finer dining establishment than Simpson’s-
in-the-Strand. Established in 1928 as a coffee house
and cigar divan, Simpson’s has a reputation as one
of the most sought-after dining venues in London.
Only the finest British seasonal ingredients are used

in a Bill of Fare that offers a wide range of timelessly
presented, wholesome classic dishes, along with
lighter options ideal for lunchtime dining. Speciality
aged Scottish beef and roast saddle of lamb are
carved at guests’ tables from the antique silver-domed
trolleys that Simpson’s has become so renowned for.
Simpson’s offers breakfast, lunch, pre-theatre dining,
and dinner.

Savoy Grill is without doubt one of London’s most

legendary restaurants. Frequented by celebrated
diners such as Sir Winston Churchill, Oscar Wilde,
Frank Sinatra and HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen
Mother, the original seating plan has been brought
back for its reopening.
Designer Russell Sage took inspiration from the

restaurant’s illustrious past, and original 1920s
Art Deco features have been restored. Head Chef
Kim Woodward oversees a menu that marks a return
to the classic Escoffier-inspired grill rooms of old.
Dishes include charcoal grilled Chateaubriand with
pommes soufflés, king crab and prawn cocktail,
lime and chocolate soufflé and iced Peach Melba.

Located directly on the Strand, Melba is The Savoy’s

gourmet take-away counter. Open seven-days a week,
Melba features a menu of sweet and savoury pastries,
British sandwich classics, hot and cold beverages to
take-away, Savoy gift items, and an extensive selection
of signature éclairs. Available in a dozen sweet flavour
combinations, the éclairs are presented in a beautiful
and striking display across the front of the shop and
are equally ideal as a treat with coffee, or bought as
a decadent gift box selection. The Melba team have
undergone intensive barista training in order to create
the perfect hot beverages, featuring Musetti espresso.
A signature coffee, Melba Coffee, is a smooth and
velvety blend of espresso with milk and peach syrup.

Savoy Tea
Savoy Tea is a bijou tea store, located in the Upper
Thames Foyer. Inspired by London’s Edwardian
shopping arcades, the walls are covered in intricate
fabric, a hint at the Asian origins of tea. The store
offers a wide variety of beautifully packaged Savoy
teas, bespoke tea accessories (such as our very own
china tea service), plus handmade jams, biscuits and
a fresh patisserie.

BEAUTY & FITNESS
Beauty and Fitness at The Savoy is a private facility

in the heart of London for health, relaxation and
wellbeing, and can be enjoyed by hotel guests and
members. The centrepiece is the 10m swimming pool,
situated in its own atrium and filled with natural light.
Fitness equipment includes cardiovascular machines

by Technogym and free weights, available 24-hours
a day, while personal trainers are available to help
maintain fitness.
A full menu of massage, facial and beauty treatments

are offered alongside separate male and female,
sauna, steam rooms and changing rooms.
