1 Introduction
The purpose of this document is to describe RBS 2111 that is a main remote RBS, which
can be configured with one main unit (MU) and up to three radio units.
The radio unit is based on dTRU (defined as RRU-N), developed for both P-GSM 900 and
GSM 1800.
The RBS 2111 is an outdoor macro base station supporting up six TRX.
• P-GSM 900
• GSM 1800
At the moment RBS 2111 is not planned to be developed for GSM 800 or GSM 1900.
Depending on market demand it might however be possible to develop it for GSM 800
and/or GSM 1900.
The RBS 2111 is optimised for medium capacity rural applications but can also be used
for indoor coverage in e.g. shopping malls and offices with a main unit centralised in e.g.
the cellar and distributed radio units for each floor or corridor.
For meeting the radio network requirements RBS 2111 comes in different configurations.
The MU and RRU and powered by 110-270 VAC. Optional Uninterrupted Power Supply
(UPS) can be connected to the MU.
The silent operation of RBS 2111 is an important factor when obtaining site permission.
Base-stations equipped with cooling fans make it harder to find sites in public places due
to high noise levels produced by these base-stations. The fact that RBS 2111 is totally
silent also reduces the risk of vandalism, as the site is less likely to attract attention from
miscreants. RBS 2111 main features are:
RBS 2111 and RBS 2108 using the same MU but has different RRUs. RBS 2108 has
RRU-C. It is possible to change RRU type from RRU-C to RRU-N or vice versa but
RRU-C and RRU-N is not possible to be installed to the same MU at the same time.

Figure 2. MU
The MU includes:
• Support for up to 6 transceivers
• Connectors for the connection between the MU and the RRU-N (1 to 3 RRU-N)
• Two E1 interfaces for transmission
• Connectors for OMT and external alarms
• Man Machine Interface, IXU-21
2.2 RRU-N
The small and compact RRU-N includes two TRX. The RRU-N is connected to the MU
via an optical interface.
Figure 3. RRU-N
The RRU-N is always equipped with two transceivers and they are all integrated in the
RRU-N.
2.3 Sunshields
RRU-N is delivered with sunshields in a discrete grey colour. For the MU the sunshield is
an optional part then the MU can be installed in a 19” rack if needed.

3 Optional products
A number of different optional products are available for RBS 2111 and these are briefly
described in the following chapters.

Back-up
Battery backup is available in an optional cabinet. There is two different battery back-ups
supported:
1. UPS-S. UPS-S provides a short time battery back up for about 5-10 minutes. UPS-
S is especially designed for RBS 2111 installed in e.g. shopping malls, airports
where power failure is only short and it takes only a few minutes until a local
generator has been started. UPS-S can only be installed indoor. UPS-S is prepared
for transmission equipment (3 U).
2. UPS-N. UPS-N provides a long time battery back up for about 4 or 8 hours
battery back for RBS 2111. Battery back-up time is chosen depending on number
of batteries. UPS-N can be installed in- and outdoor. UPS-N is prepared for
transmission equipment (3 U). UPS-N manages temperature range –33 to +50C
and is IP55 specified.

4.7 Ciphering
In the same hardware the RBS 2111 is ready for ciphering codes A5/1 and A5/2. The
ciphering is configured via the BSC.
4.9 Transmission
LAPD concentration and LAPD multiplexing can be used to increase the transmission
resource efficiency.
E1 120 Ohm is connected to the RBS 2111 cabinet via a 15-pin DSUB connector. E1/75
Ohm is connected to the RBS 2111 via an optional adapter cable that includes an
impedance converter with BNC connectors.
E1/G.703 offer multi vendor compatibility on the transmission level. E1/120 Ohm
transmission support Long Haul. The long haul feature allows for 30 dB loss and a more
cost efficient transmission network configuration. Normally E1/G.703 only offer short
haul interfaces, enabling distances up to 6 dB loss.
Coaxial connection (75 Ohm) is only available for E1 operation and does not support long
haul. The distance allowed between units is determined by the cable loss, according to the
6 dB receiver sensitivity specified in G.703.
• ETS 300 342-2, the BTS product standard, in line with the European EMC Directive
89/336/EEC.
• EN 55022 Class B
• GSM:11.21
In accordance with the Low Voltage Directive (LVD 73/23/EEC plus 93/68/EEC) within
the European Union the RBS 2111 models comply with the following requirements
regarding product safety:
• EN 60 950/IEC 950
• EN 60 215/IEC 215
• EN 60 529/IEC 529
The RBS 2111 models are CE marked in order to show this compliance.
Environmental Requirements
The requirements for climatic/mechanical environment are based on ETSI standard ETS
