Common Myths about the Sabbath

What is the prophetic symbolism?
Why don’t we keep the Sabbath of the
bible today? Was it really changed?
If it is for today, how do we keep it?
.Misunderstood Verses
Col. 2:16— “Let no one judge you on food,
drink, new moons or Sabbaths.”
Rom 14:6 “Whoever observes the day,
observes it for the Lord, etc…”
1 Cor. 16:1 where Paul takes up a collection for
the saints in Jerusalem on the 1st day of the
week.
Acts 20:7 where Paul is preaching on the 1st
day of the week.
Misunderstood Verses

Rev.1:10 when John had a vision on the

“Lord’s Day”.
Gal. 4 where Paul talks about not going back
to the elementary principles of the world.
Does God even care
which day?
Does He Care?

Ex 20:11 For in six days the LORD made

heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in
them is, and rested the seventh day:
wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath
day, and hallowed it. (KJV)
Back to the Beginning

Acts 3:20 and that He may send Jesus

Christ, who was preached to you before, 21
whom heaven must receive until the times of
restoration of all things, which God has
spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets
since the world began. (NKJ)
At what point on the timeline do you think He
will be restoring all things to?
Serious Questions
Can we agree that when our Creator made the
heavens and the earth, that there were no flaws
and that He made all things perfect?
Can we agree that everything that He had made in
the garden was perfect and He never intended or
desired for anything to change for all eternity?
Would you agree with me that if Adam had not
sinned, everything that was said to be “very good”
would still be perfect and unchanged?
Serious Questions

Would you agree with me that in the

beginning all things were perfect.
Then Adam sinned and sent the world into a
tailspin of constant groaning and imperfection.
BUT, at some point in the future when the
Messiah comes back, He will restore all things
back to the original state of perfection.
Motivation is Everything!

Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended

his work which he had made; and he rested
on the seventh day from all his work which he
had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh
day, and sanctified it: because that in it he
had rested from all his work which God
created and made.
Original Intent

So, if He set apart the 7th day in the garden

when everything was said to be perfect, and
it was never His intention for anything to
ever change from that perfection, and the
scriptures tell us that He is going to restore
all things back to the beginning, isn’t it
logical to assume that the Sabbath on the
7th day was never intended to change?
Restoration of the Sabbath when
Yeshua comes back?
Is 66:22 For as the new heavens and the
new earth, which I will make, shall remain
before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed
and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass, that from one
new moon to another, and from one Sabbath
to another, shall all flesh come to worship
before me, saith the LORD. (KJV)
In the Millennium
Zech 14:16 And it shall come to pass, that every
one that is left of all the nations which came against
Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to
worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the
feast of tabernacles. 17 And it shall be, that whoso
will not come up of all the families of the earth unto
Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts,
even upon them shall be no rain.
Something Doesn’t Make Sense

Bottom Line

He cared in the Garden

He cares when His Son comes back
He says that the 7th day Sabbath is forever.
It is logical to assume that He cares
right now.
Common Myths about the Sabbath

It was only given to the Jews

The “Christian” Sabbath is Sunday
It ended at the cross and was not
reestablished in the NT
Paul taught against the Sabbath
The NT church kept the Sabbath on Sunday
Myth #1
Only given to the Jews
Where did the term “Jew” come from?
How many tribes of Israel were present
at the base of Mt. Sinai when the
commandments were given?
How many would end up being
considered “Jewish”?
And what was the purpose
of Israel?
Is 42:6 "I, the LORD, have called You in
righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I
will keep You and give You as a covenant
to the people, As a light to the Gentiles,
• Mt 5:14 "You are the light of the
world.
An Example to the World
Deut 4:5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as
the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may
follow them in the land you are entering to take
possession of it. 6 Observe them carefully, for this will
show your wisdom and understanding to the nations,
who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely
this great nation is a wise and understanding people."
An Example to the World

7 What other nation is so great as to have

their gods near them the way the LORD our
God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8
And what other nation is so great as to have
such righteous decrees and laws as this
body of laws I am setting before you today?
Gentiles encouraged to keep
the Sabbath?
Is 56:6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join
themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the
name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that
keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold
of my covenant; 7 Even them will I bring to my holy
mountain, and make them joyful in my house of
prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall
be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be
called an house of prayer for all people. (KJV)
One Law for both

Ex 12:49 One law shall be to him that is

home-born, and unto the stranger that
sojourneth among you. (KJV)
The Game plan

Israel was chosen to be the captain of the

team and their job was to do what the
owner of the team desired.
This would result in the team being so
blessed that all the other players from the
other teams would want to quit their teams
and come and play on the Israelite team.
Their “Light” was to show them the Way!
Bottom Line

The Sabbath, was given to the whole world

in Genesis 2 when everything was perfect
and was clearly intended to be for all time.
It was written down at Mt. Sinai and given to
ALL of the children of Israel with the intent
for them to keep it, and thus be a light for
the nations.
It is not a “Jewish” Sabbath.
So, if it was given to the
Israelites and through them, the
nations…then who are we?

Jer 11:16 “The LORD called thy name,

a green olive tree, fair, and of
goodly fruit…”
Eph 2:12 remember that at that time you
were separate from Christ, excluded from
citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the
covenants of the promise, without hope
and without God in the world. 13 But now
in Christ Jesus you who once were far away
have been brought near through the blood
YOU ARE ISRAEL!

Ex 31:16-17 “Therefore the children of

Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe
the Sabbath throughout their generations as
a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between
Me and the children of Israel forever; For in
six days the LORD made the heavens and
the earth, and on the seventh day He rested
and was refreshed.”
This is critical to understand that
you become a citizen of Israel and
become subject to her covenants of
promise.
For it was to Israel that the Sabbath
was given.
This point cannot be over stressed.
The New Covenant

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the

LORD, that I will make a new covenant with
the house of Israel, and with the house of
Judah. (KJV)
Myth #2

The “Christian” Sabbath is

Sunday
Sunday instituted by Roman
Emperor Constantine

On March 7, 321 A.D., he passed his famous

national Sunday law:
“Let all judges and townspeople and
occupations of all trades rest on the
venerable day of the Sun [Sunday];”
Catholics Admit the Change

“Of course these two old quotations are

exactly correct. The Catholic Church
designated Sunday as the day for corporate
worship and gets full credit – or blame – for
the change.” This Rock, The Magazine of Catholic
Apologetics and Evangelization, p.8, June 1997
Catholics Admit the Change

"Perhaps the boldest thing, the most

revolutionary change the Church ever did,
happened in the first century. The holy day,
the Sabbath, was changed from Saturday to
Sunday. "The Day of the Lord" (dies
Dominica) was chosen, not from any
directions noted in the Scriptures, but from
the Church's sense of its own power.
Catholics Admit the Change
The day of resurrection, the day of Pentecost, fifty
days later, came on the first day of the week. So
this would be the new Sabbath. People who think
that the Scriptures should be the sole authority,
should logically become 7th Day Adventists, and
keep Saturday holy." Sentinel, Pastor's page, Saint Catherine
Catholic Church, Algonac, Michigan, May 21, 1995
Catholics Admit the Change
''The [Roman Catholic] Church changed the observance
of the Sabbath to Sunday by right of the divine, infallible
authority given to her by her founder, Jesus Christ. The
Protestant claiming the Bible to be the only guide of faith,
has no warrant for observing Sunday. In this matter the
Seventh-day Adventist is the only consistent Protestant.''
The Catholic Universe Bulletin, August 14, 1942, p. 4.
The Historians Confirm the keeping
of the Sabbath
Church historian Socrates Scholasticus (5th century)
wrote:
"For although almost all churches throughout the
world celebrate the sacred mysteries [of the Lord's
Supper] on the Sabbath of every week, yet the
Christians of Alexandria and at Rome, on account of
some ancient tradition, have ceased to do this."
Socrates Scholasticus, Ecclesiastical History, Book 5, ch. 22.
The Historians Confirm the keeping
of the Sabbath
Another historian confirmed this, stating,
"The people of Constantinople, and almost
everywhere, assemble together on the
Sabbath, as well as on the first day of the
week, which custom is never observed at
Rome or at Alexandria.“Sozomen, Ecclesiastical
History, Book 7, ch. 19.
Myth #3

Yeshua/Jesus does not tell

us to
keep the Sabbath
WWJD?

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my

commandments.
Mt 23:1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and
to his disciples: 2 "The teachers of the law
and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you
must obey them and do everything they tell
you. But do not do what they do, for they do
not practice what they preach. (NIV)
Keep the Commandments?

Mat 19:16 Now behold, one came and said

to Him, "Good Teacher, what good thing
shall I do that I may have eternal life?" 17
So He said to him, "Why do you call Me
good? No one is good but One, that is, God.
But if you want to enter into life, keep the
commandments.
Keep the Commandments?

Mt 19:18 He said to Him, "Which ones?"

Jesus said, ""You shall not murder,' "You
shall not commit adultery,' "You shall not
steal,' "You shall not bear false witness,‘ 19
"Honor your father and your mother,‘ and,
"You shall love your neighbor as yourself."'
His disciples honored the Sabbath
after His death their entire lives.
Lu 23:56 Then they went home and prepared spices
and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in
obedience to the commandment.
1 Co 7:19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision
is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts.
His disciples honored the Sabbath
after His death their entire lives.

Paul says in Rom 3:31, “31 Do we, then,

nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather,
we uphold the law.
The “Law” undoubtedly included the Sabbath.
His disciples honored the Sabbath
after His death their entire lives.
Peter in Acts 10 says that he has never eaten anything
unclean in his life 10 YEARS after the death of Yeshua.
If he is keeping the dietary commandments, it is safe to
assume that he is keeping the 4th commandment.
His disciples honored the Sabbath
after His death their entire lives.
The Apostle John in his book of Revelation said that he was in the
Spirit on “the Lord’s day”.
John is said to be the most Jewish of all the disciples.
There are only two days that are specifically called “the Lord’s day”
and that is the Sabbath and the day that the Messiah comes back to
judge the nations.
It is interesting to note that in the vision, it was they day that Yeshua
comes back.
1 Jo 5:2 By this we know that we love the
children of God, when we love God, and
keep His commandments. 3 For this is the
love of God, that we keep his
commandments: and his commandments
are not grievous.
If we are to believe most of Christianity that we don’t
have to keep the Sabbath of the bible because it is
not specifically re-commanded in the NT, then how do
we interpret John here when he says to “keep the
commandments of YHVH” when there is NO NEW
TESTAMENT at that time to look through?
Should we believe that John meant all the
commandments except the one that is called the
“seal of the covenant”?
Saints keep the Sabbath?

Re 14:12 Here is the patience of the

saints: here are they that keep the
commandments of God, and the faith of
Jesus.
“The commandments of God” clearly
includes the 4th commandment of honoring
the Sabbath on the 7th day.
Misunderstood Verses
Rom 14:5 One man considers one day more
sacred than another; another man considers every
day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his
own mind.
6 He who regards one day as special, does so to
the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for
he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does
so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. (NIV)
Misunderstood Verses

Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you

in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an
holyday, or of the new moon, or of the
Sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of
things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Misunderstood Verses
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain
deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the
world, and not after Christ.
20 Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this
world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to
its rules. 21 "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!" 22
These are all destined to perish with use, because they are
based on human commands and teachings.
Paul is warning his converts against any group that
would come in and try to impose their man-made
traditions and doctrine on them.
He cannot possibly be warning them against
people that would try to impose the biblical
Sabbath as it is clearly not a man-made tradition.
It is much more likely that the Judaizers are
judging the new converts for not keeping the
Sabbath the WAY they keep it.
While we are in Col 2…

Col 2:13 When you were dead in your sins

and in the uncircumcision of your sinful
nature, God made you alive with Christ. He
forgave us all our sins,
14 having cancelled the written code, with its
regulations, that was against us and that
stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing
it to the cross.
A Better Rendering

(ISV) having erased the charges that were

brought against us with their decrees that
were hostile to us. He took those charges
away when he nailed them to the cross.
(Lamsa) And by his commandments he
cancelled the written bond of our sins,
which stood against us; and he took it out of
the way, nailing it to his cross;
Early Church met on Sunday?
Act 20:7 Now on the first day of the week
(Sabbaton), when the disciples came together to
break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day,
spoke to them and continued his message until
midnight.
This phrase is literally saying “first of the
Sabbaths”.
This day is First Fruits and verse 6 gives it away as
it tells us that it was during the days of
Unleavened Bread.
Early Church met on Sunday?
1 Cor 16:1 Now concerning the collection for the saints,
as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do
ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you
lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there
be no gatherings when I come.
Again, the word “week” here is “Sabbaton”, which is the
Greek word for Shabbot (Sabbath).
The Literal Version

(LITV) On one of the Sabbaths, let each of

you put by himself, storing up whatever he
is prospered, that there not be collections
then when I come.
Misunderstood Verses

Acts 15:20 But that we write unto them,

that they abstain from pollutions of idols,
and from fornication, and from things
strangled, and from blood.
21 For Moses of old time hath in every city
them that preach him, being read in the
synagogues every Sabbath day.
Misunderstood Verses

Gal 4:9 But now that you know God—or

rather are known by God— how is it that
you are turning back to those weak and
miserable principles? Do you wish to be
enslaved by them all over again? 10 You
are observing special days and months and
seasons and years!
Critical Context!

8 Formerly, when you did not know God,

you were slaves to those who by nature are
not gods.
These were GENTILES and were never Jews.
How can they go back to something that
they never observed before?
Proof By Silence
The Sabbath was the most important and
staple law of the Jews. If Paul or Yeshua would
have been teaching against it or broke it in any
way, they would have immediately been
brought into the court on charges and stoned.
There is NO such recording because there was
never even a debate on whether the Sabbath
was relevant or not.
It was the SABBATH!
There is Absolutely NO evidence
that the early believers did not
celebrate the Sabbath.
Proof that the Sabbath is for Today
Mat 24:15 "Therefore when you see the
"abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel
the prophet, standing in the holy place"
(whoever reads, let him understand), 16 "then let
those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17
Let him who is on the housetop not go down to
take anything out of his house. 18 And let him
who is in the field not go back to get his clothes.
Proof that the Sabbath is for Today

Mt 24:19 But woe to those who are

pregnant and to those who are nursing
babies in those days. 20 And pray that your
flight may not be in winter or on the
Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great
tribulation, such as has not been since the
beginning of the world until this time, no,
nor ever shall be.
So, if the Sabbath is really for
today, then how are we supposed
to keep it?
No work…for anyone

.
Ex 20:10 But the seventh day is the
Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou
shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor
thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy
maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy
stranger that is within thy gates (KJV)
YHVH is our Provision

Ex 34:21 "Six days you shall labor, but on

the seventh day you shall rest; even during
the ploughing season and harvest you must
rest.” (NIV)
A Holy Gathering

Le 23:8 But ye shall offer an offering made

by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the
seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall
do no servile work therein.
Do His Will, not Yours

Is 58:13 "If you keep your feet from

breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you
please on my holy day, if you call the
Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day
honorable, and if you honor it by not going
your own way and not doing as you please
or speaking idle words, 14 then you will find
your joy in the LORD…
No Preparing to Work

Num 15:32 While the Israelites were in the

desert, a man was found gathering wood on
the Sabbath day.
No Buying on the Sabbath

The people in making an oath before YHVH

say:
Ne 10:31 "When the neighboring peoples
bring merchandise or grain to sell on the
Sabbath, we will not buy from them on the
Sabbath or on any holy day. (NIV)
Bottom Line
We are not supposed to do what we do the other 6 days of
the week.
No work
No making other people work by buying from them.
This is NOT a day to do what WE want to do, but a day to
delight in the Lord and in our family.
It is a day to REST from life and to get our batteries
recharged by plugging into His Word.
How do I know that the 7th day
is still Saturday?
Because the Julian calendar was instituted in around 45
AD and was kept all the way up to the 1500’s, when the
Gregorian calendar took its place.
So, we have perfect record that the Roman Saturday has
always been the 7th day of the week.
Also, the Jews have been keeping the Sabbath for
thousands of years and there is no group that believes
in the 7th day Sabbath that even claims any other day.
Special Cases

What if I’m a doctor or I have to work or I

will lose my job?
Conclusion
The Sabbath was made for all mankind in the garden.
It was wrote down in stone on Mt. Sinai and was
commanded to be kept forever.
It was a sign forever between YHVH and His people.
Yeshua kept the Sabbath as did all of His disciples.
We will be commanded to keep it when He comes
back.
Conclusion
The early gentile church fathers, who hated the Jews,
stopped keeping the Sabbath on Saturday and started
keeping it on Sunday because of their anti-Semitism.
The Roman Catholic Church admits changing it.
There is no where in the scriptures that prophesies of
such a major change of what God called eternal, or even
a debate in the NT or other writings.
Why?

Because the Sabbath is one of the largest

blessings that He ever gave man once he
was cursed to work in the garden, and He
would never take that away from us.
