It’s so great to see a child who can easily (and with an enthusiastic smile) recite all the books
in his Bible. But the task can seem overwhelming, such that most teachers don’t even want
to go there!
Come to us! Having examined all the approaches to teaching kids their Bible, we have
picked the most memorable and fun exercises to be found and put them all together. You
don’t have to worry about a thing — just follow our six easy lessons, and kids will recite all
those books.
TeachSundaySchool.com 5
something difficult. For example, two donkeys named Sam carry two kings, each
reading newspapers. Can you picture it? That helps kids remember 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2
Kings and 1 & 2 Chronicles.
• R & R: It sounds relaxing, and it is, but the R’s actually stand for repetition and
reinforcement. Our varying fun exercises, games, and races will have kids going through
their memorization pieces several more times by the end of class. .
DUAL-PURPOSE VISUALS
Games and Activities require free wall space. Many of our relays involve listing the books of
the Bible by taping them to their proper places on the wall. Leave them there for weeks to
come! When you finish each, you will have a visual reminder for students.
AND OF COURSE...
The best thing you will get in this package is a chance to start kids’ lives off with the means
of knowing their God better and better each year. Think of your students as adults sitting
in a pew, trying to follow the pastor to Titus 3:9. Think of them visualizing a cheerleader
whose cheer takes them easily to that book in the New Testament, and them remembering
you and your efforts to teach them the important things in life.

Experts have long said, “Interest is the key to learning.” Here is a treasure hunt designed to
get kids interested in their Bibles. While searching through clues, kids will learn fun facts
unwittingly — but ones they won’t forget! While other activities can go in most any order,
this one should definitely come first, to assure that kids’ interest is heightened.
MATERIALS
• Treasure Hunt Add-On (see below)
• Bible — the older and more used it looks, the better. NIV is best, but not necessary.
• Box, cardboard or more treasure-chest-like, in which the Bible will fit
• Bag of chocolate coins or candy kisses
• Scotch tape
• Five envelopes
PREPARATION
1. Print out one copy of the Treasure Hunt Add-On pages.
2. Cut out the clues, fold them, and put them in sealed envelopes with only the numbers
#1, #2, #3, and #4 appropriately marked on each.
3. After cutting the treasure cards, tape a chocolate coin or candy kiss securely on the
indicated spot.
4. Decorate your treasure box. Insert the Bible and the treasure cards. Hide it up high in
your supply cabinet.
5. Tape the clues to the places indicated.

I have totally important and bombastic news for you. According to the elders of our
church, learned from elders who came before them, and those who came before
them...
There is valuable hidden treasure buried on our church property.
In fact, on a secret map obtained by the elders of this church, from the elders who
came before them, and those who came before them...
The X that marks the spot is located right around this classroom.
Some of you may think I am joking. But I promise as your teacher: Everything I have
told you so far and everything I will tell you concerning this is absolutely true.
Today, we will be looking for the silver and gold of our faith - a treasure hidden from
many - to be passed down, from generation to generation, and preserved for some,
including the people in this room.
There are clues hidden around this room. Are you ready to find the treasure?
Have the children look around until they see Clue #1. Look for all four clues until the
treasure is found. When the kids open it, pass out the candy and their treasure cards. Make
an enormous big deal over the Bible, emphatically agreeing that it is a treasure worth more
than all the silver and gold in the world.

D ECODING B IBLE M ESSAGES
This activity follows the treasure hunt, and involves the 15 treasure cards on which kid’s
candy or prizes came. Kids decoding this important Bible passage will give you a chance to
speak more on why the Bible makes sense to some and doesn’t to others.
MATERIALS
• All 15 treasure cards from the treasure hunt
• Teacher’s Answer Sheet for Decoding Treasure Cards (follows this activity)
• Pencils
• Extra sheets of paper, one per student
PREPARATION
The decoding will be harder for younger children. Hence, in a mixed group, give more of the
cards to the older children and only one or two to the younger. (Give them extra candy from
the bag!)
INTRODUCTION
Like most messages that either lead to or accompany treasure, the messages in our
treasure have been written in code so that only those meant to know what it says can
read it.
In this case, each treasure card contains one piece of the bigger message. There are 15
pieces, divided up among you now. To get the big message, you must first figure out
the code.
Once you figure out how to decode one letter, you will know how to decode all of the
letters. Let’s see how you do.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. The coding is very simple; if they get stumped, you can show them that several cards
contain the single letter “J” as a word. There are only two single-letter words in
English: I and A. Hence, “J” is one of those words.
TeachSundaySchool.com 14
2. Once students establish that the letter “J” is the letter “I,” some should realize that
this is a “shifted alphabet code,” and if each letter in the message is shifted back one
letter, they will get the proper decoding.
3. Have them practice their message on the extra sheets of paper before writing it on
the treasure card - to prevent it from tearing via erasures and overwriting. Once they
get all of the 10 or 11 words encrypted on the card, write them below the encryption.
4. The message is from the last lines of the Bible: Revelation 22:16-20, NIV. Once they
have all 15 cards decoded, tell them this.
5. If the Bible you used in the treasure hunt was NIV, have them look this up to put the
cards in order.
6. If not, there is a copy of this message, broken down into the 15 card segments, on the
fifth page of the Add-On. Use that instead.
7. Have students take turns reading the message aloud.
CONCLUSION
These are the last words that Christ said publicly until this very day. When he said
them, he had already ascended into heaven. He was speaking to the Apostle John,
who had been a teenager when he followed Jesus. At the time John wrote the
Revelation, he was around 90. He had been taken prisoner because of his views as a
Christian. He was imprisoned on what was essentially a large rock, high above the sea,
called the Island of Patmos. There, he wrote the Book of the Revelation, inspired by
visions Christ gave him and by visitations into heaven itself.
Today, Jesus speaks to some people privately. He will speak to us all in prayer if we
learn how to listen. But this is the foundation of our faith:
Jesus calls everyone who wants to come into his heavenly family. He tells us he is
coming back. He tells us in the meantime to keep the faith: believe in him, believe in
the Bible, and we will see and hear from him again.

Some people think the Bible was written “chronologically,” or in order of when events
happened. Not true! With the exception of Genesis and Exodus, most of the history of
the nation of Israel is found in this section.
This is the HISTORY section of the Bible. It’s the story with all the great tales. It’s easier
to remember than you think, because it has all the doubles in it — right in the middle.

What is the first book of the Bible? Genesis.
Genesis means “beginning” or “start.” In Bible terms, it means the start of lots of
important things — the world, man, animals, the nation of Israel. So many of our Bible
heroes are found in Genesis! Can you name some?

Exodus means a “going out,” or a departure. In the Book of Exodus, God’s people left
slavery in Egypt to obtain their Promised Land. Lots happened in Exodus! Can you

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Hold up the image of the one of the Bible heroes.
2. Have a student recite the story about him or her. If no student knows the story, recite
it yourself (see Teacher’s Help Aid below).
3. Ask what book of the Bible that story is found in.
4. If no one knows, tell them. Or, if you have some older children, they can try to google
it on a smartphone or find it in a Bible.
5. Have a student volunteer write the book and chapter just beneath the image, then
tape the character above the correct Bible book on the timeline.
6. When all are on the timeline, spread them evenly by carefully lifting the tape and

This fun relay will help students get all the books of the Old Testament that they have
learned so far right — the first four sections or 27 books. It’s fast, easy, and the first chance
you have to do this many books without visuals and mnemonics. It’s a brain teaser that
works!
MATERIALS
• Add-On, First 27 Books (see below)
• Scotch tape
• Masking tape
• Marker pen
• Scissors
PREPARATION
1. Create two copies of the Add-On First 27 Books.
2. Cut out all the books on the Add-on Sheets and make two piles on the learning table,
keeping them separate from each other.
3. On the wall, lay two lengths of masking tape, each about three feet long.
4. On each piece of masking tape write: Pentateuch / History / Songs & Poetry / Major
Prophets.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Divide the class into two teams.
2. If you have enough students, each team should pick a captain and a runner. The
captain should be the one who reads best and/or knows the Bible books best. The
runner can be a younger student who can’t read so well.
3. Have one team gather around one set of books of the Bible and the other team gather
around the second set.
TeachSundaySchool.com 46
4. When you say “Go,” teammates should start pulling names out of the pile. After
deliberating, the runner on each team should tape a piece of Scotch tape to the top
of one and run it to the masking tape on the wall, taping it at its approximate place.
5. Teammates should work together to get and stay organized. Captains may put the
books in order on the table to save time for the runner. Captains or teammates may
also shout to the runner where to tape the book and how much space to leave above
or below.
6. Repeat this until one team has all 27 books on the wall. That team wins.
7. If you only have enough students for one team, the team may play against the clock,
trying to beat its first time while racing the second time.
CONCLUSION
Have your students repeat the first 27 books while looking at them on the wall.
Have them turn their backs and repeat them without looking.

We only have one more section of the Old Testament to learn. Let’s go back to our clap
and figure out how many books are in this part.
Go back to your clap of Five... Twelve... Five-Five Twelve... until someone says this part has
TWELVE books.
It is the MINOR PROPHETS. There are 12 Minor Prophets, 12 books. They have funny
names that aren’t easy to spell. But let’s take a look at them.
Show Page 3 of the Add-On, which lists the prophets in Biblical order and have kids try to
pronounce the names. Give out candy kisses every time someone gets one. This is a tough
learning experience!
TeachSundaySchool.com 52
Starting with the Hs:
Hosea – Habakkuk – Haggai
We can remember that the longest name is in the middle.
We can remember that the names get weirder (uglier) as they go along.
Have them say all three names several times.
The Js go in alphabetical order:
Joel — Jonah
The Zs go in reverse alphabetical order. They sound very much alike. They both start
with “Ze” and end in “iah.” They
Zephaniah — Zechariah
The Ms also are in reverse alphabetical order. Another easy way to remember them is
that MALACHI is well-known as the last book in the Old Testament.
Micah - Malachi

Very similar to the game with the Poetry and Major Prophets, this one requires students to
organize the Minor Prophets as a team. As the Minor Prophets are most challenging to
order, this game is best played just after the Add-On for Minor Prophets is completed.
MATERIALS
• Minor Prophets Game (see below) • Scotch tape
• Scissors
PREPARATION
1. Be sure to have a clear playing area on one wall.
2. Make two copies of the Game, one for each team.
3. Cut out the prophets and scramble them within their own sets, placing the sets on
the learning table. (Be careful not to mix up the sets.)
4. From the second page, cut out the two headings and tape them to the wall beside
one another.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Divide the class into two teams. Pick a captain and a runner for each.
2. When you say “Go,” the captains and teams should begin ordering the Minor
Prophets on the table. The runners should begin taping names on the wall in order.
3. The first team to get all 12 prophets in order taped to the wall wins.
For more than one round of reinforcement:
1. In the first round, have the mnemonic visible.
2. For the second round, remove the mnemonic.
Conclusion: Now, who can repeat those names without looking at them? Decide
whether they should do it with the mnemonic or without, or try both.
Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai,
Zechariah, Micah.

L EARNING THE N EW T ESTAMENT
FROM O NE Z ANY S TORY
Kids can learn all the books of the New Testament just by remembering a zany story that
works half like a mnemonic and half like a visual. For children who are learning the Bible
absolutely cold (i.e. have never heard of Galatians before), we will break it down into parts,
which you can use for several weeks. But for most Bible students, the tale of “The Church,
the Giant, and the Cheerleaders” will get them all the way through to Revelation! This
method was designed by Pastor Steve Demme and is available visually on YouTube.
MATERIALS
• Add-On: ALL the Books of the Old Testament
• Add-On: New Testament Story: Revealing the Books in Bible Order
• Add-On: Books of the New Testament in Alphabetical Order (see below for all 3 Add-
Ons)
• Pencils
PREPARATION
1. Photo copy the Add-Ons for each student.
2. Give each student a copy of Add-on ALL the Books of the Old Testament as they enter
class, to work on as an Intro Activity so they will not forget their Old Testament Books.

A man goes into a church. He sees the cross above the altar. It has four segments, he

Four Books of the Gospels:
He turns to go back out the door and notices there is an ax in the doorway.
The only book of history in the New Testament:
...being that it’s a very hot day, he pulls a Royal Crown Cola from his pocket.
Royal Crown Cola = 1st three epistles
After his first sip, he sees a giant in the road! It is a giant eating popcorn!
Giant Eating Pop Corn = 3rd thru 6th Epistles
Then he goes to a ball field and sees cheerleaders. They are cheering, “Thes...Thes...Tim-

“Thes...Thes...Tim-Tim Ti!” = 7th-11th Epistles, or 5 Epistles that start with “T”

But he can’t see who they are cheering for! Then he sees it...they’re cheering for the

TEACHING A REVIEW:
How many books are in the Bible? 66
How many books are in the Old Testament? 39
Therefore, how many books are in the New Testament? 27
Let me tell you a story. You can tell me what it has to do with the Books in the Bible.
Ready?
A man goes into a church. He sees the cross above the altar. It has four segments, he
realizes. He turns to go back out the door and notices there is an ax in the doorway. He
steps over it, and being that it’s a very hot day, he pulls a Royal Crown Cola out of his
pocket.
After his first sip, he sees a giant in the road! It is a giant eating popcorn. He quickly
moves past and comes to a ball field.
There he sees cheerleaders. They are cheering, “Thes...Thes...Tim-Tim Ti!” But he can’t
see who they are cheering for! Then he sees it - they’re cheering for the wrestlers under
the bleachers. One had bruised another! The bruised one had to go home and put on his
PJJs.
Say the story a couple more times, stopping and asking the children to fill in the details.
If we can visualize this story, we can learn all the books of the New Testament. Let’s
break it down and try!
Use the Add-On New Testament to teach this.
Just follow along with the Add-On, stopping and asking kids to help with the names of the
books.
For the first round, they should just watch you fill in the words.
For the second round, give them their own copies of the Add-On and let them fill it in.
Let’s work on some other ways to help you remember our silly story and remember
your New Testament verses.

It may take a bit of practice just to get the students to remember the zany story that
reminds of us the books in the New Testament! This game of charades will help kids think
of the actions in order...as they act them out and guess the books involved.
MATERIALS
• Add-On Zany Story in Pieces (see below)
• Scissors
• Hat or Basket
PREPARATION
1. Make one copy of the Add-On page for each student. Make an extra copy to cut into
playing cards.
2. Cut the extra copy up into the seven parts of the story.
3. Fold all seven parts and put them in a hat or basket.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Have a student volunteer to pull a segment out of the hat or basket.
2. He gets a few moments to study it and then act it out before the group.
3. The other students should look at their page and guess which part he is miming.
4. To make a guess they should raise their hands, and the first hand raised gets the first
guess.
5. If the student is right, he gets to guess which books of the Bible go with that segment.
If he is right, he gets a point for every book he got right.
6. Have your assistant keep track of the scores.
7. Do not put the played-out segment card back in the hat. Do rounds until all seven
have been covered.
8. Repeat this for as many rounds as you would like.

R ACE TO O RDER THE N EW T ESTAMENT
Similar to past games, your students must race to order the books of the New Testament.
This game should follow the learning of the books, and you can use it with or without the
Zany Story mnemonics and visuals.
MATERIALS
• Add-On New Testament Books (see below)
• Scotch tape
• Masking tape
PREPARATION
Cut the New Testament Books from the Add-On and shuffle them as playing cards. Place
them on the learning table face-down in a pile.
Place a piece of masking tape on the wall, about 4 feet long.
Using about 6-inch segments, write in the mnemonic or visual that goes with the story on
the tape in order, along with the number of books that should go under that column:
1. Sees a Cross in Church; (4)
2. Sees an ax in the door; (1)
3. Grabs an RC Cola (3)
4. Sees a Giant Eating Pop Corn (4)
5. Sees cheerleaders: Thes... Thes...Tim-Tim-Ti! (5)
6. See wrestlers, one bruises another (3)
7. Wrestler goes home to recover in his P-P-J-J-J-J’s (6)
8. Last Book! (1)
TeachSundaySchool.com 65
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Form two teams of the class, mixing older with younger so that you have a somewhat
equal division of talent. Decide which team will go first.
2. When you say “Go!” the first team will pull a Bible book. They will discuss amongst
themselves under which mnemonic/visual they think it goes.
3. A runner will take the book and tape it to the wall under the title where the team
thinks it should go, gauging how far down it should be taped.
4. If they are right, they get a point. If they are wrong, the other team gets a chance to
re-tape it. If that team is correct, they get a point. If both teams are wrong, the teacher
tapes it under the right heading, and nobody gets the point.
5. The team with the most points when all 27 names are correctly taped wins.

SONG RECOMMENDATIONS
Nothing Helps kids memorize better than songs and rhythms. Here are links to some of the
best songs available to teach Old and New Testament Books. We deem them as having the
catchiest tunes, which is a key to lyrics sticking when they involve long lists:
1. Kids Worship Songs—Books of the Bible Song (New Testament), by Freedom Kids
2. Books of the Bible Song, (Old Testament) by WFK Report
3. Awana Books of the Bible.wmv (Old and New Testament) by Charlotte Xia (This tune
is great if you or your assistant is a guitar player. The chords are easy to figure out;
then you don’t have to rely on electronics in class.
FURTHER ACTIVITIES
Jump Rope
Some Sunday school teachers have recommended jump-rope games for learning the Bible.
Even if you’re tone deaf, you can lead these with joy!
1. Single/Double: Take a series of Bible names, for example, those in the Old
Testament History section. Have students double jump (slow) those names. Anyone
who gets all the way through should try it doing single jump (fast). Just prepare kids
on how to shorten names like “Second Chronicles” for a single jump. Shorten that
name to “two-Chron,” etc.
2. Random Book Jump: You say the name of any book in the Bible while a student is
single jumping. He or she can take three more silent jumps but then must name the
five books that follow. If you say, “Jude!” the answer would circle back: “Revelation,
TeachSundaySchool.com 68
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers.”
Random Mixes
Find ways to mix up the titles of books around the classroom, so that students have to put
them in order.
1. Hide & Seek: Hide book titles around the room and have students find and order
them
2. Secret Codes and Encryptions: These help kids learn to spell the books as well as
order them. Mix up the letters or create a secret code from the alphabet to encrypt.
Electronics
Use hand held-games and search engines to show children how to look up Scriptures. Show
them what happens when you say into Siri Colossians 1:4. Google any term followed by
“Scripture” and show them that verses will arise in either Bible Hub, Bible Gateway, or Open
Bible concerning that topic.
In other words, if they are afraid of something, they only need to google “Fear of the Dark
Scripture,” and they will see excellent sites and their Scriptures. Investigate with them how
to use the websites where the Scripture pops up.
Kids are so smart with electronics, that they can probably teach you how to use the sites
better!
