Maui, Hawaii · New York, New York · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I was born in Kennesaw, Georgia and moved to Maui, Hawaii when I was 5 years old. From my
travels abroad, I have been able to experience some of the masterpieces of world architecture, art,
and the incredible cultures of other societies.

My goal as a future architect is to create environmentally responsible spaces that are memorable
and meaningful through the engagement of the mind, emotions, and the senses of the user. Spaces
which leave the user to pause and reflect whether they are the primary user, visitor, or simply some-
one passing by.

COMMUNITY CENTER
ARCH 106 (Studio 3B)

Located in a neighborhood of Philadelphia with no distinct identity, the site facilitates

two levels of access, on-grade from Sansom Street and from the Walnut and Chestnut
Street bridges. Taking advantage of its frontage to the Schuylkill River, the design seiz-
es the opportunity to connect to the Riverwalk, integrating a once isolated site into the
city. The community center is designed to become a focal point for the neighborhood,
acting as a catalyst for rejuvenation of the surrounding area through its approach to
connectivity and design.

An urban landscape traverses the plinth of community center creating an urban park
for those inside and outside the neighborhood. In addition to public space, the plinth
contains two levels of parking as well as a grocery store that fronts 24th Street. The
plinth can be understood to be a landform that supports the architecture above, ad-
ditional public space and connectivity and provides needed amenities to the com-
munity. Two forms are situated on top of the plinth which contain the program of the
community center. Framing throughout guides circulation as well as implements forced
perspective.

Along with the new community center, Sansom Street between 23rd Street and 24th
Street was designed using the principles of woonerf creating a greater pedestrian
control of the street.

MICRO-APARTMENTS
ARCH 105 (Studio 3A)

The micro-apartment is a trend in studio-style housing containing

all of the necessary elements of living within an urban setting using
minimal means for maximum effect. A 58-story luxury micro-unit
residential tower stands on the banks of the Schuylkill River on the
corner of 25th and Locust Streets containing 180 micro-apartment
units, 11 stories of office and retail space, 5 stories of amenities for
the residents, and a terraced park space connecting the building to
the Schuylkill Riverwalk.

The central concept informing the design decisions is the creation of

“micro-neighborhoods” in a high rise building. The floors are split
into sub-communities containing 5 residential floors and 1 parking
floor connected by an atrium stairway. A car elevator allows for
parking in the sky.

ROWHOUSE
ARCH 104 (Studio 2B)

Both homes were designed with the artist in mind. The same design applied
to two different lots employed different use and organization of space. One
home serves as the gallery house for exposition, and the other home serves
as the studio house for creation.

The courtyard atrium is the heart of both houses and serves different purposes
in each home. In the gallery house, the circulation surrounds the centralized
courtyard allowing natural light to flood the entire home. The courtyard in
this home serves as an event space with pneumatic pavers that can be raised
and lowered to provide seating, a pedestal for artwork, and various other
purposes. In the studio house, the courtyard abuts the neighboring party
wall. It serves as a place of tranquility, escape, and inspiration for the artist.
A white marble waterfall, angled to reflect sunlight, flows into a koi pond
that spans the length of the courtyard. Both houses have folding glass doors
along one side of the courtard to open the home to this space.

BOATHOUSE
ARCH 103 (Studio 2A)

The design was informed by the tempo of the crew rower’s stroke which cre-
ated the rhythms for the boathouse structure. The ultimate design goal was to
seamlessly combine water with land. This was accomplished by placing the
facility on both land and water, while framing views from the water to the land
and the land to the water. Storage for up to 8 boats at water level allows for
easy access to the river. Circulation is defined by a series of frames guiding
the user to the extension over the river.

ARCHITECTURAL FOLLY
ARCH 102 (Studio 1B)

Intersecting and folding were the spatial operations implemented in the original
component. The folds created and served as an artificial landscape which then
traversed the natural landscape. A tower rooted into the hillside was created by
stacking the component. Throughout the rest of the natural landscape (cliff and
plateau) the unit is rotated and dug into the landscape to create multiple different
experiences of the same component.

URBAN OBSERVATORY
ARCH 102 (Studio 1B)

Located at the intersection of 37th Street, Lancaster Avenue, and Powelton Av-
enue, the observatory focuses on the sun’s position at noon on the solstices and
the equinoxes. Each tower corresponds to its respective sun position. The user
experiences the direct light of the noon sun underground creating a heightened
sense of the power of the sun and its effect on the earth. The intention of the de-
sign is to connect the heavens with the earth by orienting the towers to the sky
while aligning them to the street and a tree imbedded in the earth.

PIER
ARCH 101 (Studio 1A)

A series of collages began the design process of the pier. Using my own photog-
raphy, I used multiple textures, shades of black, and hues of color to explore the
concept of pheonominal transparency. Relief models were then created based
on the collages, to extract the implication of shade, shadow, hue, and their cor-
relation with depth. The relief model then informed the choreography of the pier
and the circulation throughout the structure. Incorporating the intervention of the
frame allowed for the control of viewshed and sound throughout the paths of
circulation.
