Review Chapter12 – Textbook

Round off your results appropriately in each case.
Work without appropriate UNITS and neatly tabulated results will be returned without grading.

Use Meyerhof Bearing Capacity Equations (or charts)

Q1. Determine the ultimate bearing capacity qult for the following cases (a) to (c). Use Fig.1.
a) Strip Footing, B= 1.5m, Depth of embedment = 1m.
b) Rectangular Footing: B=2m, L=3B, Depth of embedment = 1m.
c) Circular Footing (same cross sectional area as (b)). Depth of embedment = 1m.
d) If the eccentricity in (b) is eB=0.1m, determine ultimate load Q. Depth of embedment = 1m.
e) Assume a FS=3. Determine Qall for (d).
f) Determine the maximum and minimum contact soil stresses (for Qult) under the foundation in
(d), and compare it with the contact stress in (b).
g) Neatly plot (to scale) qult (y axis) versus B/L (x-axis), assuming B=1.5m. (Assume many different
L’s and calculate qult). Assume no eccentricity.

Neatly tabulate your results.

moist unit weight = 16.4kN/m3; ’=36 deg. (triaxial test)

Ground water (2m below ground level), Saturated unit weight = 19.3 kN/m3.

’=36 deg. (triaxial test), Unit weight of water = 9.81 kN/m3

Bedrock at 10m depth

Q2. Determine the ultimate bearing capacity qult for the following cases. Use Fig.1, but (triaxial) friction
angles (in parenthesis) varies with depth as follows:
Depth 0-1m (’=32 deg), 1-2m (38 deg), 2-3m (33 deg), 3-4m (37 deg), 4-5m (30deg), 5-6m(42 deg), 7-
10m (44 deg).

a) Strip Footing, B= 1.5m, Depth of embedment = 2m.

b) Rectangular Footing: B=2m, L=2B, Depth of embedment = 2m.
c) Circular Footing (same cross sectional area as (b)). Depth of embedment = 2m.

Neatly tabulate your results.
