Due to refinements in the method used for the calculation of vehicle miles traveled and the use of preliminary data in
some cases, the Arizona crash and fatality rates may differ slightly from previous reports. The most current data is
always used at the time of publication, but it may change as new information is received.

On average, a police-reported motor vehicle crash occurred every 5 seconds, a

person was injured every 11 seconds, and someone was killed every 12 minutes.

NOTE: Cost estimates are based on the 2004 National Safety Council estimates of the average cost of motor vehicle crashes, deaths and
injuries. These costs are an estimate of wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, motor vehicle damage, and
employer costs. A description of the National Safety Council's current cost estimating procedures may be found in the Technical Appendix
of Injury Facts®. Effective with the 1993 bulletin, the Council extensively revised its cost estimating procedures. New components were
added, new benchmarks and inflation factors adopted, and a new discount rate of 4% was assumed. For this reason, the cost estimates shown
here are not comparable to those published in earlier bulletins. Some further revisions were made for the 2004 bulletin.

1. Fatality $1,130,000
2. Incapacitating Injury 58,000
3. Non-incapacitating Injury 18,900
4. Possible Injury 10,700

In this chart, "Unknown" represents incidents where the reporting officer could not discern whether a
safety device was in use at the time of the crash. For this reason fatalities and injuries occurring where
use was unknown are not included. Motorcycle operators are included in this chart under "Drivers."
"Safety Devices" refer to the use of helmets or safety belts depending on the mode of transportation. For
a detailed analysis of motorcycle helmet use, see Section 8: Motorcycle Crashes.

Section 4: – Safety Devices

Arizona law requires young children to be restrained when riding in a motor vehicle.
A.R.S. Title 28-907 states "...a person shall not operate a motor vehicle on the highways in this state when transporting a child
who is under five years of age unless that child is properly secured in a child passenger restraint system.”

The most dangerous place for a child to travel in a car is in your lap.
T his is often called the “child crusher position.” In a crash of approximately 30 mph, a 10 lb infant will be ripped from a
belted adult’s arms with a force of almost 200 pounds. If the adult is unbelted, the child is likely to be crushed between the
adult’s body and the dashboard.

Wearing a seat belt isn’t just a good idea; in Arizona it’s the law.

were saved by child restraints from 1975 through 2004.
