Oximeter softwa¡e Revisions T and later change several oximeter alarms/messages, as well as
the reasons why tJrese alarms/messages occur. This addendr¡:n describes the resulting changres
and additions to information ín tfte Oñmeda Biox 3700e Pulse Oximeter Sen¡ice Manual.
software Revisions T and liater affect sections of thls manual that contain the following
information:
The patient and. probe alaro tone is silenced for one ainute after tJre SYSTEMOPERAIIONAL
messag€ appears during initial power up. If the probe is off ttre patient (PROBEOFF alarm) or
not connected to the oxim.eter (NO PROBEalarm) when this minute is up, the alarm tone stays
silenced until the condition changes. In otJrer words, the alarm tone is silenced until the probe
is connected to the patient and the oximeter.

Staged Alarm System
Software Revisions T a¡rd later change oximeter messages/alarms and message/alarm
conditions for the oximeter's staged alarm system.
The staged alarm system warns you that data might be unreliable and. that you may need. to
check tJ.e probe site or how the probe is applied to the patient. The heart of this system is an
algorithm that checks sigrnal guality from the probe site. This algorithm notes a low quality
signal "event" when the sigmal quality deteriorates due to motion of the probe site, poor
probe plaeement, electrical noise, or other fastors. The oximeter initiates messagies, then
insreases alarmlmessag:e severity according to the number of these events that occur over a
Beriod of time.
The foUowing tables provide a¡r overview of the staged alarm system. They list alarms and
messages output by the oximeter a¡d a computer interface (ü used) dwing the ala¡m stages.

As shown in tJre tahles, tJre type of messagesr rti-sp1.r", and alarrns indicate the
severity of
signal deterioration from the probe site. wtren sisn¿ quality im.proves to acceptable
levels,
alarms and warning messagfes ceas€ and di."prays retr:rn to normar.
Warning Remedie¡ :
1' Check attachment and placement of the probe model you ¿ue using against
instructions in
the o¡meda P¡obes Manual (0380-o9oo-085,gx*tooo-304). Make sure that
the probe is
used according to instrustions.
If the bar grraph on the Graphic Dispiay shows sigmal strengrüh at 1 pixet

minute (BpM) for S
seconds or rnore, the fo[owing @qrrs:

Note: RevisÍon T does not change the LOQUALITY SGNLmessage that appears when the bar
graph on the Graphic Display is at 5 pixeis or less continuously for 5 seconds or more.
The oximeter outputs wanüngs when internally calcadated SaO2readings indicate possible
unreüable data, This data may be r¡nreliabte because of probe site motion, poor probe
placementr or poor probe site selection. The following wafnings occuf:
Note: These warnings a¡e the savne that occur during stage 3 of the staged alarm system.
However, these probe placement warning's occr.¡rimürediately, without first going through
messages and alarms associated with stage 1 and 2 of the staged alarm system.
If you use a computer interface with the oxiñeter, SaO2readings dash and the following messag:es
appear on the computef scfeen:
. SaOzand PulseRateread.ings dash for all modes
ó A OHECKPROBESITEmessage appenrs for the auto output mode
. A eG messaga aBpears for the output trend mode
. An er¡or code of I appears for the waveform mode
Warning Remedie¡
Use the following technigues to alleviate the waming condition. Try the technigues in order,
starting with number one, until atrarms, messa€fes, and otJrer wamirrgs cease.
1. Check attachnent and placement of the Brobe model you are using against instructions in
tlre Ohmeda Probes Manuat (0390-0900-095,BX#1000-304). Ma}e sure rhat rhe probe is
used according to instrucüions.

IGY ACTION
The INTERFERENCE DETECTED description shor:Id read: Disptayed when the input sigmal is too
ar¡atic to be processed. This can be caused by strong RF (radio frequenry) interference,
someti:res generated by electrosurgery.
IMPORTANT: V\Ihen the oximeter detests strong interference, the SaO2 and puJse rate
readings do not change. If this interference persists beyond the time periods ind.icated below,
the INTERFERENCE DETECTED messag'e appears" Afier thé interference siops, the oximeter
begins collecting data again. The SaO2 and pulse rate readingfs return to the d.ispiay
approximately 2 seconds after the interference stops.
