SWOT Analysis

- KASANDRA HILA-
Speaking Notes

Strengths: (Culture Metaphor)

- Positive Campus Climate
The need for a more connected community emerged as one of the strongest areas of consensus in
the feedback from the consultation sessions. There is a clear sense that the University would
benefit both from better communication and engagement within its own structures, and with the
broader community as well. Internally, this might manifest itself as greater opportunity for
collaboration and teamwork among and between faculties and administrative units, meaningful
dialogue as a community about major issues facing the University or decisions affecting the
workplace, or – in the case of students – creating better ways to engage students in campus life.
In addition, a clear sense emerged from university faculty and staff, students and community
partners that all would benefit from greater integration and dialogue between the University and
the external community
- Quality Academic Programs and Student services
Based on UniRank1 , University of Manitoba is ranked as the best university in Winnipeg. It has
strong administrative support, skilled faculty and staff as well as a large number of programs,
the largest among the other universities in Winnipeg. The University of Manitoba ranks 3rd
among ten Canadian Virtual University (CVU) dual-mode institutions with respect to the
percentage of curriculum offered fully online (8%), behind Thompson Rivers (20%) and
Memorial (11%). UM also ranks 2nd among those CVU universities in undergraduate
registrations in fully online courses and 3rd in the total number of students taking fully online
courses. 22% of the undergraduate student credit hours in the Faculty of Arts are in fully online
or blended format.2
- International and Indigenous Program Support
A great strength of the University of Manitoba is the diversity of its student body, particularly its
growing population of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students. U of M has a lot of programs and
services that help the indigenous student to achieve success and feel welcomed. Over 17 percent
of U of M students are international, representing over 100 countries and contributing to the
cultural diversity of Winnipeg, Manitoba, which is known for its welcoming, urban community.
- Strong Partnerships
U of M has a lot of partners and this makes them to have a lot of connection in the market place,
offering a lot of co-op programs for students after graduation.

Weaknesses (Political Metaphor)
- Aging Facilities
Since U of M is a really old university and it has a lot of facilities, those are expensive and
requires a lot of funds to maintain and restore them, and this is one of the reasons why some of
facilities may not be in the best conditions.
- Adjusting to pressures of growth
As I mentioned before U of M is considered to be the best university in Winnipeg and it has a lot
of requirements for admission. This make it harder the process of accepting new students and
sometimes it may be not totally fair. And with all the requirements it is hard to adjust to the
growth.
- High Costs for International Students
Even though U of M is the very popular the high costs for international students make it harder
to approach a lot of internationals considering that the tuitions fees are the highest among the
other post secondaries school.

Opportunities: (Organism Metaphor)

- New Technologies
Since U of M has a lot of online courses it is good to consider to technologies which will make
the learning process better managed.
- Expanded Global Focus and Partnerships
It might consider new opportunities for new programs and partnerships that would contribute to
the success of the entire organization

Threats
- Competition
Since they are a lot of post secondaries school in Winnipeg, the competition is hard and
sometimes it need a lot of effort to new ideas to keep attracting the best students.
- Poor academic preparation
This is related to the risk of not meeting the desired outcomes from the faculty staff and not
preparing in the best way students
- Federal Funding Reductions
Since U of M is supported by the Federal State a reduction of funds would cause a lot of
uncertainty and chaos inside the organization.
- Uncertain Economy
If the economy will change this would affect the entire organization because it needs to reanalyse
the tuition fees and at the same time to maintain its quality
