Safety Plan: A) Personal Protective Equipment (Ppe)
The Construction Safety Plan is in place to ensure a safe environment at all times. It allows operations to be
conducted in a manner that provides protection for all individuals, including labours, employees, visitors,
and contractors.
This Plan will be reviewed periodically, every 1 year, and may be modified / edited as necessary to ensure
information included is accurate.
• ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION & REPORTING - Any accident or incident resulting in a lost-time injury,
fatality, damage to property or equipment, a serious "near miss," or the recognition of a potential hazard
to health and environment, the Office of Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management shall be
notified immediately.
• JOB HAZARD ANALYSIS -Whenever a non-routine project or task is necessary job hazard analysis shall be
performed to evaluate the potential risk of injury to personnel
• HOUSEKEEPING - Cleanliness of the project site; All employees, labours shall keep trash, debris, remnant
parts, and other items picked up on a regular – at least daily – basis
• TRAINING- Training is critical to help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses and to assist with obtaining
emergency assistance without delay.
All employees will attend periodic training, in addition to the required site safety orientation, that will
include heat-related illness and injury prevention methods.
• Foot Protection- Sturdy, above the ankle work boots that are in good condition must be worn
• Work Attire- Full sleeve Shirts and pants to be worn. Tank tops and cut-off shirts are not permitted
• Hand Protection- Workers shall wear gloves at all times to prevent hand and finger injuries when
handling tools or materials.
B) CRANE SAFETY-
• No employee will work or travel on any part of the crane boom without proper personal fall arrest
equipment.
• No worker will be allowed to climb the tower or get on the boom when the crane is in operation.
• Crane operators will perform daily tower crane safety inspections
• Geotechnical Requirements- Soil conditions must be fully assessed prior to any crane arriving at the
site. Items to consider include travel, slope, and soil loading ability.
• Foundation Consideration -. Tower crane foundations design, certified by a professional engineer,
taking all loads and soil conditions into consideration.
• Rigging & Slinging - Riggers must be properly trained and qualified to rig material or equipment lifted
by a crane. Hooks will be equipped with safety latches.
C) ELECTRICAL SAFETY-
• All electrical subcontractors to follow the National Electrical Code of Conduct 70E standards that
regulates electrical safety when any “live work” is going on.
• Electrical equipment and tools used on the project shall be inspected by a competent person to
prevent any worker from receiving an accidental electrical shock.
• All major electrical appliances to be visually inspected daily for damage and defective pieces should
be immediately removed from service and TAGGED OUT as defective equipment for repair.
• LOCKOUT TAGOUT- Establish a Lock out/Tag out procedure to ensure that workers are not
exposed to the hazards from moving machinery or equipment. Safety locks and tags will be applied
to all circuits, switches etc.
• Sloping • Shoring
• Benching • Timber / Aluminum shoring
• Placing a shield • Sheet piling
The methods used in protection of underground excavation are-
Ladder safety
• A ramp, ladder or stairs shall be provided to access any working platform elevated 1.5 feet or
more.
• Follow the principle of 1:4 while using the ladders
• Allow sufficient clearance on the top of the structure to be climbed
• Factors need to be considered are angle of inclination, extension off landing
Scaffolding
Scaffold tags to be maintained as Red, Yellow and Green
The properties of good scaffolds to maintain safety are:
• To withstand load of men, material • Not to be overloaded
and self-load • Clear access to be maintained
• Stability • Prohibit public entry
• Withstand impact and wind pressure
Safety in guard rails
• It should be placed wherever there are openings.
• The minimum distance between top and bottom rails should be 900 mm
• The minimum width of toe boards should be 150mm
Safety belts
• For works of height more than 2.0 m.
• Lanyard to be anchored to a fixed point.
• Free-fall not to exceed 1.80m
• Lanyard not more than 3m.
Fire Prevention-
• Structure shall be constructed of non-combustible material or have a fire resistance rating of
one (1) hour.
• Combustible refuse from construction operations will not be burned or dumped anywhere on
the construction site. Such refuse will be removed at end of shift.
• Flammable and Combustible Liquids will be stored, dispensed and used in accordance with OSHS
requirements
