INTERNET ADDICTS

The latest addiction to trap thousands of people is the Internet, which has been …(19)… for broken
relationships, job losses, financial ruin and even one suicide. Psychologists now recognize Internet
Addiction Syndrome (IAS) as a new illness that could cause serious problems and ruin many lives.
Special help groups have been …(20)… to offer sufferers help and support.
Psychologists have described many …(21)… examples, including one man who took his own life
after borrowing more than £14,000 to feed his addiction, and a teenager who had to receive
psychiatric treatment for his 12-hour-a-day …(22)… . “This illness is not fake, and it must be taken
seriously,” said an expert in behavioural addiction at Nottingham Trent University. “These are not
sad people with serious personality defects; they are people who were fine before they found the
Internet.”
IAS is similar to other problems like gambling, smoking and drinking: addicts have dreams about the
Internet; they need to use it first thing in the morning; they lie to their partners about how much
time they spend online; they wish they …(23)… cut down, but are unable to do so. A recent study
found that many users spend up to 40 hours a week on the Internet; …(24)… they felt guilty, they
became depressed if they were made to stop using it.
Almost anyone can be at risk. Some of the addicts are teenagers who are already … (25)… on
computer games and who find it very difficult to resist the games on the Internet. Surprisingly,
however, psychologists say that most victims are middle-aged housewives who have never used a
computer before.

The Clay Armies of China

1 Wang Xueli, a site director of the Shaanxi Institute of Archaeology, explained: “In March of
1990, workers were building a highway from Xian to the new airport. The road passed Jing Di’s
tomb. The road builder noticed abnormalities in the soil and called us.”
2 Something, it seemed, was there. Soon archaeologists began their work. First they surveyed
the whole area, recognized the patterns in the soil, and made a map and an excavation plan. Then
they began to dig, not into the tomb of the emperor, but into the fields around it. They unearthed
an army of clay soldiers in twenty-four separate pits. These soldiers, each about two feet tall, were
like soldier dolls. They were once dressed in silken robes and once had movable wooden arms, but
the cloth had decayed and the wooden arms had, too. So now they stand like armless guards, still
loyal to their emperor after 2100 years. Also buried were doll-sized horsemen, cooks, servants, food
supplies, and kitchen utensils. The old Chinese saying “Treat death as life” means that
archaeologists have learned a great deal from the fields around the tomb of Emperor Jing.

46. In 1990, the site of the buried army was found by _______________.
a) workers b) farmers c) Qin Shi Huang d) soldiers

47. What does “there” refer to in paragraph 2?

a) March of 1990 b) Xian c) Institute of Archaeology d) the soil
