EDITOR’S DESK

"One man's 'magic' is another man's engineering. 'Supernatural' is a null word."

Engineering is a trade which synthesizes the abstract concept of various sciences into a physical form. The
bedrock of engineering will always be the application of mathematical and physical theory to create wealth
and to improve our quality of life. But engineering is far more than just applied science. The essence of
engineering is in its practice. The particular skills of engineers are developed by solving real world problems
rather than becoming conversant in physical theory. Mechanical engineering lies at the very heart of creation
of physical systems that aim at making the lives of individuals more secure and comfortable. It is the
unquenchable thirst for development of new technologies which motivates Mechanical Engineers to embark
on relentless journeys of embodying theoretical knowledge into machines. Such technologies play a major
role in assisting the evolution of the human societies by further reducing errors that creep in due to
restriction of human capabilities and making existing systems more efficient. The Mechanical Engineering
Society of IIT(BHU), Varanasi, provides the quintessential platform for discussion and proliferation of such
ideas through COMET each year.

Each edition of COMET is based on a central theme that adresses the current issues of the scientific world
and challenges the budding engineers and scientists to come up with brilliant ideas and express themselves
by overcoming the hurdles in technological development .The theme for COMET’18 is Imagination
Implementation Innovation, which has been modelled so as to tackle the most demanding problems faced
in the vast field of Mechanical Engineering. This theme inspires the inquisitive minds to cross these barriers
and plunge into the realms of innovation. Just like the previous editions, COMET'18 is based on the ‘Make in
India’ initiative, which encourages increasing production in India. Thus, COMET’18 provides a platform for
the propagation of research and technology, helping India attain self-reliance in the scientific world.

It is with immense enthusiasm and pleasure that we present to you the official proceedings of COMET ’18.
The edition encapsulates the synopsis of the papers presented at the conference. It also highlights the
pioneering research work being carried out by the faculty members of Department of Mechanical
Engineering, IIT (BHU), Varanasi. The edition also includes information about the events held during
COMET’18.

Last but not the least, we take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed in making COMET’18
a great success. We are extremely grateful to Prof. Rajiv Sangal, Director IIT (BHU), Prof. A.S.K Sinha, Dean
(Academic Affairs), Prof. Rajeev Prakash, Dean (Research and Development), Prof. A.K Jha, Head of the
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. P Shukla , Vice-President, Mechanical Engineering Society and
Dr. Amitesh Kumar, Treasurer, Mechanical Engineering Society for their constant support and
encouragement.

Theme: Imagination, Implementation, Innovation

Albert Einstein once said, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination”. Imagination is
the unique human capacity to envision what is not real but what could be possible. Imagination is the
foundation of great achievements and the key to the future. Without it none exists-with it everything is
possible. Great dreams are only possible when one has the ability to imagine it. An engineering problem can
have multiple solutions but to find the most optimal solution one must be imaginative because imagination
in its most revelatory capacity, is the power that enables us to empathize with humans, whose difficulties
we want to overcome with our ideas.

However, Imagination without implementation is like dreams that come and go. Proper implementation
means working up a thorough plan for putting your idea into action and then executing it. The
implementation of engineering solutions is a rigorous task involving consideration of very accurate
dimensions of various physical quantities that are a part of the problem, also one has to keep in mind the
limitations and shortcomings of his solution.
Innovation is the process of coming up with better ideas or improving the current solutions to meet the ever-
changing requirements of human society. Innovation is what keeps the world in constant progress. As one
observes the current problems in the products and services that are circulating in the market, he comes up
with better designs and proposals and that is innovation in its purest form.

Features of COMET’18
Colloquium - A Paper Presentation Event
The inquisitiveness of finding something new is what we should all strive to develop. When appropriate efforts
are put in, solutions are bound to come. This event offers a platform to aspiring scholars to present and
exchange their ideas, innovations and solutions to engineering problems in front of a very scholarly and
erudite audience. This event will bring together leading researchers, engineers, and scientists from around the
world, for brainstorming over the most feasible solutions to some of the most pertinent engineering problems.
Colloquium, the premier forum for the presentation of new advances and reseaches will act as an excellent
opportunity for widespread recognition in the field of theoretical and experimental engineering. In addition,
the outstanding papers from the event are published in the International Journal of Science, Research and
Development.

Caliber’de-en-quete’
Caliber’de-en-quete or in short CDQ, is a national level aptitude test held every year in more than 50 colleges
and schools across the country. CDQ, i.e. quest for competence, rigorously test the technical prowess and the
managerial acumen of the participants, and only the multi-faceted personality having perfect blend of IQ and
EQ can withstand a series of challenging tests aimed at distinguishing the personal armoured with technical
and managerial acumen along with intellect. The event was first organized during COMET’16 and saw an
overwhelming participation of over 5500 students.

Technologue- Guest Lectures

Knowledge comes from experience. And when you have the pioneers of different fields interacting with you
to share their knowledge, you know that there is a lot of things in the store for you. Enlightening Insights and
life-steering suggestions are the most probable outcome of interactions between an experienced mind and
many curious ones. The guest lectures at COMET’18 will revolve around some of the most intriguing and
unconventional subjects and will offer an opportunity to interact with expert practitioners and eminent
personalities from the industry and gain from their knowledge and experience.

Pensée critique- Case Study Event

As rightly said, “If you wait until there is another case study in your industry, you will be too late.” Pensee Critique is
one of its kind, which focuses on the objective to provide real-world problems that an organization might face, and
viable plans to achieve that objective. Pensee Critique is entirely dedicated to the dexterity of case study. It offers
challenges on several fronts, ranging from strategy implementation to valuation, and much more.

Pintemos- Informal Events

The conference would be incomplete without some entertainment and fun, isn’t. Keeping this in mind, COMET’18
will held a series of entertaining and amusing events. This series of enthralling events, called Pintemos will consist
of 3 categories – Camisa, Reforma, and Colourathon. Camisa will allow the participants to be their own creator
and design their own innovative and creative T-Shirt. Reforma will implore the participants to design a poster
which either outlines a problem or proposes a suitable solution, in the most creative fashion. Colourathon is a
wall-painting event where one will be required to dye his soul with the color of his thoughts and splash, spill and
swarm his creativity to invite a colour flood on the wal

Scope of the Conference

Ever since its inception in 1990, COMET has always witnessed an exponential trend of dispensing and
receiving knowledge and experience. It has always attracted and received nationwide participation from
various reputed colleges and has always been a platform for the propagation and advancement of science &
technology. We saw an incredible amount of creativity, put to work by passion and persistence. The
conference has always laid emphasis on innovation and fostered creativity not only amongst undergrad
students but also for high school students.

In today’s era, we are striving to keep up the pace of development as the exploiting nature of human endeavo
has left us with a very few limited resources. If soon an appropriate solution isn’t found out then we would
be left with nothing for the future generations to live on.

Keeping this thought in mind, 24th edition of COMET has come up with the idea of 3-I’s “Imagination,
Implementation, and Innovation”. Visioning the idea of ‘3-Is’, the conference aims to provide students and
professionals from across the nations a platform for exhibiting their technical acumen and act as a medium
of exchange of potential ideas that will revolutionize the field of mechanical engineering. It focuses on the
importance of proposing better models, designing better mechanisms and their implementation for the
welfare of the society, in spite of limited resources available to the scientific community. It provides an
opportunity to present ideas on various such issues and a platform to come together to share ideas and work
upon them.

We believe that with the variety of events under the purview of COMET’18 ranging from Paper Presentation
Event to Case Study Event and Guest Lectures to Informal events, it will serve the purpose of lightening upon
the talent of various internal and external participants of the conference
