Profound Experiences of Spaces

‘Profound experiences of space’, this very term reminds me of one particular

cultural place in my hometown named ‘Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan’, which
is one of the many places where cultural occasions and folkdance nights is
organised.
It used to be one of the most spacious cultural places in my hometown’ with a
couple of Peepal trees in the vicinity giving the place a natural aura, which I
would say, used to create the perfect vibe for folk musical shows and local band
concerts and also some theatrical programmes [like Jatras of old times].
‘Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan’ was established by the Government of Tripura
in honour of Nobel Award winning poet Rabindranath Tagore and was further
renovated in 2012. The old building was originally a combination of two spaces.
An auditorium and a spacious ground. Most of the theatrical shows used to take
place in the auditorium whereas other cultural shows use to take place in the
ground which basically can be said to carry the legacy of Tagore’s principle of
Shantiniketan- ‘Learning in the lap of Nature’.
The cultural ground was also used by different political parties to advertise their
political propaganda through small rallies.
But in 2010, The Government of Tripura decided to renovate this place and
build a new auditorium which unlike its older version wouldn’t of any open
gathering space rather there would be two auditoriums.
For me it was like putting an end to Tagore’s legacy and instead convert this
place into a commercial one let one a cultural place.
In my experience, I would say the removal of cultural ground destroyed the
open cultural integrity of the space which used to define the less degree of
enclosure of the space and this also affected certain cultural organisations who
earlier used to showcase their skills under the open sky.
I would rather suggest that every cultural place at least should have one open
gathering space as such areas really create the perfect vibe for cultural shows.
