Entry 10- Leadership, Participation, and Collaboration

The candidate seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student
learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, support staff, and
community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession.

The field of education is in a state of constant discovery and growth currently. There are new instructional
theories, behavior management systems, and learning theories to learn from and implement almost
constantly. This is because there are so many educators and professionals with such a passion for
educating the young minds of America that we simply can’t stop trying to improve the profession to
ensure success of our students. There are so many ways to advance the profession of music education
that don’t include large presentations and studies, although those are important in their own regard.
Other advancements to the profession could be teaching beginning flute lessons in an area where they
aren’t currently being offered, or creating an event that synthesizes the community together with the
public school’s music program.

I have been able to lead, collaborate, and teach in many different settings throughout my time at K-State
and in the classroom this past semester. I was able to participate in the Kansas State University Marching
Bands Program as a Section Leader for two years, leading a group of my peers as the Music Instructor.
This gave me invaluable experience that helped me immensely when student teaching in the secondary
setting. I was also able to try out different pedagogies and instructional strategies as I learned them in my
courses. I have also collaborated with a group of undergraduate students in researching the most effective
pedagogies for underserved public schools. I have been able to present this research and help empower
other teachers to not see lack of resources as a sign of program success or failure. These experiences, plus
many more, have grown my appreciation for the field I am working in and the all of the people who are
involved with the learning process be it parents, students, administrators, colleagues or the community
around the school.
