SQUARE FOOTING SUBJECTED TO AXIAL LOAD AND MOMENT (as

per IS 456 code)

Input data:

Size of column = 450 x 450 mm

Service loads,
D.L = 620 kN,
L.L = 860 kN
S.B.C = 200 kN/m2
Service moment = 200 kN
Concrete grade = C30
Steel = 460 N/mm2

i) load calculation

Total service load = 1480 kN

Ultimate load = 1.5 x (620 + 860) = 2220 kN
Total load on footing = Axial load + 10% of axial load (wt. of foundation)
= 1.1 x 1480 = 1628kN.

ii) Area of footing required

1480  1.1
Size of footing required. = 200
= 8.14m2

Providing square footing of size 3.3m x 3.3m

iii) Actual pressure =

P M  1480 200  6 
 =  3.3  3.3  = 182.9 kN/m2
A Z  3.3  3.3 2 

pmin = 182.9 kN/m2

pmax = 116.17 kN/m2 < 200 kN/m2 . Hence ok.

iv) Moment calculation (at critical section, i.e. face of column)

2220 300  6
Pressure due to U.L =  = 253.95 kN/m2 (max),
3.3  3.3 3.3  3.3 2

153.77 kN/m2 (min)

 838  650   3  650  838  1.425

Moment =    1.425    = 723 kN.m
 2   650  838  3

723  10 6
Depth reqd. = = 230mm.
0.138  30  3300

Provide a overall depth of 650mm

v) Area of steel reqd.

To Find Ast ;
Mxx 723  10 3
 = 0.61
bd 2 3300  600 2
From Table no.4 of SP 16 :1980
100 A s
 0.17
bd

As = 0.17 x 3300 x 600 = 3366 mm2.

3366
No of 20 mm dia. bars required =  10.72
314

Therefore provide 11 no. of 20mm dia. bars at 280mm c/c

vi) Check for shear
(critical section at the distance d from face of column)
 838  75 
Shear force at face of column =    0.825 = 657kN
 2 

657  10 3
Shear stress = = 0.30 N/mm2
3300  600

Allowable shear stress, τc = 0.34 N/mm2 > 0.30 N/mm2, hence ok.
vi) Check for punching shear (critical section at distance 0.5d from
face of column)
Perimeter = 4 x (450 + 600) = 4200mm

Force = 2244 – (1.052 x 218) = 1978 kN.

1978  10 3
Shear stress =  0.78 N/mm2 < τc = 1.37 N/mm2 (.25√fck),
4200  600

hence ok.
