questions. Today, we will explore more about these
people, not just by their physical attributes but

3. Introduction

Our topic for today is about “The Arab Psyche”.

This is an essay. Let us try to understand who they
are and what they were before. Through this essay,
We’ll surely understand the Arab Psyche. By the way,
what is psyche? Yes, Tanya?
Psyche is the totality of the
human mind or personality.

we are going to explore the personality of
the Arab People.

the essay.

What were the Arabs Before the Islam or in

pre-islamic era? Yes, Angela? According to this essay, the
Arabs are an ancient Semitic
people.

Yes, Semitic people were the Arabs who originated

from Yemen. They spoke Semitic Language. The
social structure that they have is a tribal unit, which
has the primary function of defending its members,
Whether they are right of wrong. However, there two
Types of tribes before which is the pure Arab lineage
and naturalized. What is the difference between the
two? Yes, Angelo?
The pure lineage is called
Qahtan, originated from Yemen
while naturalized Arabs refers to
peoples which mixed and
intermarried with the Quatan.
Exactly! So, those who are pure Arabs are called
Qahtan and those who are intermarried with these
Qahtah are naturalized Arabs.

During the pre-islamic era, the tribe was the

primary social and political unit of the Arabs. The
pre-islamic poet states that: I am nothing but a member
of my tribe. If it goes astray, I will too, and if it follows
the right path, so will I. What can you say about this
passage?
They are very loyal to their
tribe.

Precisely!, They have built a strong bond among

the members of the tribe because of their loyalty.

However, Arabs in the pre-islamic era did not focus

more on creating urban centers meant that schools of
specialized intellectual skills, instead, they are villagers,
pastoralists or traders. What do you think the kind of
living they have? They only live a very simple
life.

Yes, they live a very simple and practical way of

life.

Moreover, pre-islamic Arabs were adamant about the

law of revenge. According to them, a disgrace must be
avenged, no matter what the consequences. As one of the
poets states: I shall wash disgrace with the edge of my
sword, no matter what this may bring about. What can
you say about this passage? Revenge is through
killings.

Exactly, according to the Arabs, what is a disgrace? Disgrace is

characterized by
cowardliness and fear of the
enemy.

Yes, cowardliness and fear on one’s enemy is a disgrace.

What kind of personality does it implied? They are very brave.

Yes, brave in a way that they fight what they believe

in, without thinking if it is right or wrong. They do not
care.

For a tribesman, he had to display certain elements of

character which were valued in his culture such as courage,
generosity, integrity and pride. However, it is said that
courage is only important if family and property and honor
were to be defended. Consequently, audacity became as
highly regarded attitude among Arabs.

Pre-islamic Arabs are people of eloquence because they loved

eloquent speech and the expression of their folk wisdom in
clever proverbs. Story-telling and recitations of poetry were
standard features of the social gatherings.

The emergence of Islam is the period the Arab nation embraces

the Islamic religion. Through the message of the Prophet
Mohammed, peace be upon him, introduced drastic changes to
the political, social, intellectual and cultural life of Arabs.
The Holy Qu’ran helped the Arabs to uplift themeselves to
become better specifically with their personal and political life.
The Holy Qu’ran does mainly focus on spiritual aspect of muslims
but also political and social aspects. In other words, Qu’ran is
their sole guide and basis how they should act and think. Islam
brought high ideals and holy fire among Arabs which enabled
the rapid expansion of the Muslim in the world. The Revelation
had really a powerful impact on the Arab Psyche until now.
