ICE PLANT DESIGN

Capacity of plant = 25 Tons of ice (TOI)

Tons of Refrigeration Approximation

TR≤ TOI

TR≤ 25

TR≤ 40.98

Size of Can
From Kent’s Mechanical Engineers’ Handbook, p11-50:

Size of can = 11 x 22 x 44 in

Weight of Ice block

From Kent’s Mechanical Engineers’ Handbook, p11-50, Table 1:

For 11 x 22 x 44 in. ice can:

W = 300 lb.

Temperature of Brine
From Kent’s Mechanical Engineers’ Handbook, p11-50, Table 1:

For 11 x 22 x 44 in. ice can:

T = 15 ºF

Time of freezing
From Kent’s Mechanical Engineers’ Handbook, p11-50:

Time of freezing may be calculated using the following formula:

H = 7a²
32-t

Where:

H = time of freezing, hr.

a = thickness of cake, in.

t = temperature of brine

H = 7(11) ²
32-15

H = 49.82 hours ≈ 50 hours

Number of Cans Required

From Kent’s Mechanical Engineers’ Handbook, p11-50:

the number of cans may be computed using the formula:

N = wH
24C

where:

N = no. of cans

W= weight of ice, lb.

H = freezing time, hr.

C = weight of one ice block, lb.

N = (25 x 2000) (50)

24(300)

N = 347.2 CANS ≈ 350 CANS

Volume of Freezing Tank

From Kent’s Mechanical Engineers’ Handbook, p11-50:

VFT = VICE + VBRINE

Where:

VFT = volume of freezing tank

Vice = volume of ice

Vbrine = volume of brine

Vice = 11 x 22 x 44 in.

Vice = 10,648 FT3 x 350 block

Block (12)3
Vice = 2156.713 FT3

VBRINE = 60 FT3 per TR x 40.98 TR

VBRINE = 2458.8 FT3

VFT = 2458.8 FT3 + 2156.13 FT3

VFT = 4615.513 FT3

Size of Freezing Tank

Based from ice plant and cold storage design kupdf.net

For one freezing tank of 350 cans:

CsL Ci
For agitator
Csw

Width of the tank

Ci
25 x 14 CANS

Length of the tank

Clearance: Ice can orientation:

CsL = 13” Ci = 3”
L = 11’

Csw = 8”
W = 22’

Ci = 3”
25 x 14 CANS
Length of the Tank:

L = 2CSL + NCLt + Ci(NCL – 1)

Where:

CSL = wall clearance ( length)

CSL = 13 ‘( includes additional 18” for brine agitator space )

t = thickness of cake

NCL = number of can in a side

Ci = ice can spacing

L = 2 (13) + 25(11) + 3(50 – 1)

L = 373 in.

Width of the Tank:

W = 2 CSW + NCWW + Ci(NCW – 1)

Where:

CSw = wall clearance ( width)

CSw = 8”

W = width of cake

Ncw = number of can in a side

Ci = ice can spacing

W = 2(8) + 14(22) + 3(14-1)

W = 363 in.

Height of the Tank:

VFT = 2 (L X W X H)

H = 4615.513 (12)3 in3

2(373 in) (363 in)

H = 29 .45 in. ≈ 30 in.

Dimension of the Freezing Tank:

Size = 373 x 363 x 30 inches.

Cooling Load Calculation
Heat Rejected from Water

Raw water is at 77 ºF

QICE = mCpwΔtw + mhfi + mCpiΔti

= QICE = 300 lb (1Btu/lb-ºF) (77-22)ºF + 300 lb (144 Btu/lb)

+ 300 lb (0.5 Btu/lb-ºF) (32-15)ºF

QICE = 1185 Btu/hr per block (50 hours)

QICE = 1185 Btu x 350 blocks x 24 hrs x 1.055KJ x 1hr x 1 TR

hr-block 50 hrs 1 Btu 3600s 3.516 KW

QICE = 16.59 TR
