The document discusses the design of purlins including calculating section properties, estimating loads, and checking stresses and deflections.

Basic section properties like width, weight, and section modulus are calculated. Sectional properties like area, moments of inertia, and section modulus are also determined.

Dead load, live load, and wind load calculations are done to determine the effective uniform distributed loads on the purlin in different directions.

DESIGN OF PURLINS

SECTION 1: PROPERTIES OF SECTION

INPUT PARAMETERS:

Thickness t = 0.9 mm
Overall Depth = 90 mm
Radius of curvature = 1.35 mm
"Alpha" = 1 For lipped sec.
B' = 40 mm
C' = 15 mm
Gamma angle = 90 degree (Lip angle)
A' = 90 mm

(1) Basic dependant parameters:

a= 86.4 mm
a" = 89.1 mm
b= 36.4 mm
b" = 39.1 mm
c= 13.2 mm
c" = 14.55 mm
u= 1.41371685 mm
X= 13.274 mm

(2) Sectional properties: COIL WIDTH = 193.31 mm

(a) Cross Sectional Area = Ax = 173.98 mm2 Weight per meter = 1.37 Kg / m
(b) Moment of Inertia about x-axis = Ix = 224015.75 mm4 = 22.40 cm4
(c) Moment of Inertia about y-axis = Iy = 42122.62 mm4 = 4.21 cm4
(I) Sectional modulus Zxx = 4978.13 mm 3
= 4.98 cm3
(j) Sectional modulus Zyy = 2106.13 mm3 = 2.11 cm3

Estimation of loads:

Roof slope = 1/ 1.75 i.e, 30 degrees.

Wind pressure = 157 Kg/m2
Dead load = 13.84 Kg/m2
Live load = 0 Kg/m2
So, DL+LL = 13.84 Kg/m2

Purlin spacing = 1.428 m no. of sagrods = 1

Bay spacing = 2.8 m

Effective U.D.L on the purlin along its major axis = 0.02 t/m and ,for DL = 0.02 t/m
Effective U.D.L on the purlin along its minor axis = 0.02 t/m
Effective U.D.L due to wind load = 0.21 t/m
Effective U.D.L due to wind + dead load = 0.19 t/m

Maximum moment in DL+LL condition = 0.01 t-m

Maximum moment in DL+WL condition = 0.12 t-m
Maximum moment in minor axis = 0.003 t-m

Deflection of the section = 16.63 mm
Allowable deflection limit = 15.56 mm Hence FAILS

Check for Dead + Live load:-

Actual bending stress in the purlin = 25.75 < 1.0 x allowable bending stress, hence O.K
Deflection of the section = 2.14 mm
Allowable deflection limit = 15.56 mm Hence O.K

Check for Lateral load:-

Actual bending stress in the lateral direction = 15.22 Mpa < 1.0 x allowable bending stress, hence O.K
Actual deflection in lateral direction = 0.71 mm
