ON IDENTIFYING THE TYPE OF CONTEXT CLUES USED TO SUGGEST THE MEANING OF WORDS
Samantha was exasperated. She and her mother had been quarrelling, or fighting,
for several hours, and she wanted to take a nap. For some reason, Samantha was having
a lot of trouble focusing on getting her room picked up. She wasn’t really sure why, but
it seemed that there was always something to distract her, which made her forget what
she was supposed to be doing. The day was slipping by.
Samantha’s mother remarked, “if your room isn’t cleaned up by 5:00, I’m afraid
you can’t go to the fair with your friends.” Suddenly, Samantha realized the consequence
(result) of her dirty room. Right away, she immediately got to work. She picked up a
variety of things such as dirty socks, books, games, and all kinds of other stuff. Her
mother starred dumbfounded, totally shocked that her daughter was suddenly cleaning.
“Looks like you’ll be going to the fair after all” she exclaimed.
After several years, Kate finally found time furlough (to lay off from work)
herself from her care giving work. She almost does not want to go to her country because
she has established camaraderie with her colleagues and employers. However, she badly
needs to leave and to fix intricate problems within her family and other non-urgent
matters at their home. Upon arrival, she learned that poverty is really a very predicament
not simple, social problem to solve. She promised to help her family this time. She often
falls into introspection such as where she has gone wrong, what shall she do to fix the
problem or would it be right for her to ask sorry from her husband. She is place in exigent
same as how a lawyer is placed on a critical situation when he has to defend a guilty
client.
Very good!
Based now on your answers,
what do you think the type of context
clue being utilized in the sentence class?
Use of synonyms Ma’am.
We can also discover the meaning of an
unknown word using synonyms by looking for
comma, dash, parentheses, a link or series
of synonymous terms or restatement of the
difficult terms in more familiar words in
phrase, clause or another sentence.
Good!
One type of context clue is the use of
synonyms.
Precisely class!
Another type is the use of antonyms.

V. ASSIGNMENT
A. FOLLOW-UP
For a long time he lived in the toy cupboard or on the nursery floor. No one thought very
much about him. He was naturally shy. Being only made of velveteen, some of the more expensive
toys quite snubbed him. The mechanical toys were very superior and looked down upon everyone
else. They were full of modern ideas, and they pretended they were real. The model boat, who had
lived through two seasons and lost most of his paint, caught the tone from them. He never missed an
opportunity of referring to his rigging in technical terms. The Rabbit could not claim to be a model
of anything, for he didn’t know that real rabbits existed. He thought they were all stuffed with sawdust
like himself. He understood that sawdust was quite out-of-date and should never be mentioned in
modern circles.
Directions: Write the letter of the word on the right which has almost the same meaning as the word
or phrase on the left. Use the words in the text to understand the meaning.
