Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will begin by asking the students what foods include peanuts. A majority of the
answers will be peanut butter or oil. As students share their answers, the teacher will write their
ideas onto the whiteboard. The teacher will then go on to explain that there are over 300 uses for
peanuts and that they are in many things that you might never even guess. The teacher will then
play a BrainPop Jr. video for the students to watch that goes over the life and inventions that
George Washington Carver discovered. As the video is playing, the students will be provided with
an answer sheet to follow along with to write their answers in as the video plays. The teacher will
pause the video after important parts to allow students ample time to write down their answers as
well as discuss the important facts. After the video is complete and the students are done with
filling in their answers, the whole class will go over and discuss the information they just learned.
Students will be encouraged to ask questions they may have come up with as the video was
playing.
Once that activity is complete, the teacher will then discuss what the next activity will be.
Students will be expected to get into groups of 3-4 classmates to complete a mini research project
about the multi-uses of peanuts. The students in the group will conduct a search via the internet to
come up with 5 different uses of peanuts. After the group comes up with 5 uses, they will be
expected to create a flipbook or PowerPoint about the uses. Students will provide the use, a
picture, and why that use is important. When the project is complete, each group will present
their findings to the class. The lesson will conclude after each of the groups have presented their
mini projects about the different uses of peanuts that George Washington Carver invented and
discovered. The students will be encouraged to ask questions after peers presentations for deeper
clarification.
The project may take one full day or go into two days due to the amount of time students will
need to spend researching which uses of peanuts they would like to include in their presentation.
The final product will show the different thinking of the students. Although there is a format
students are to follow, students will show their differentiation in what they include and how they
present the final project. To extend this lesson, groups could go on to pick one of the uses they
chose and research what that use is specifically used for. Many uses of peanuts are in things that
we would never think of, so it would be an interesting project for the students to continue.
Feedback will be provided almost immediately after the presentation. The teacher will grade the
students work as they are presenting. Each group will receive one grade for the overall project.
Reflective Practice: The activities that the students are to do for this activity include a tutorial
followed by a project that involves collaboration with group members. The entire point of this
lesson is for students to grow their knowledge about the different uses of peanuts that George
Washington Carver discovered. This activity gives students the ability to dig deeper into the
inventions of others. Students are expected to know who George Washington Carver is, so this
project will ensure they do an interactive and hands-on project that they will not forget. The other
technology tools involved are the Internet for a quick search on the other uses that were not
included in the BrainPop Jr. video.
