T.L.E COOKERY 10
A whisk is a cooking
utensil which can be used to
blend ingredients smooth or to
incorporate air into a mixture,
in a process known as whisking
or whipping. Most whisks
consist of a long, narrow
handle with a series of wire
loops joined at the end. The
wires are usually metal, but
some are plastic for use with
nonstick cookware. Whisks are
also made from bamboo.
Whisks are commonly used to whip egg whites into a firm foam
to make meringue, or to whip cream into whipped cream.
A peeler (vegetable scraper) is a
kitchen tool consisting of a slotted metal
blade attached to a handle that is used to
remove the outer layer, informally
dubbed the "skin", of certain vegetables,
often broccoli stalks, carrot roots, and
potatoes, and sometimes fruits such as
apples, pears, etc. A paring knife may also
be used to peel vegetables. A peeler
differs from a knife in that the blade has a
slot cut into it, which is sharpened on the
inside edge, while the other side prevents
the blade from cutting too far into the
vegetable.
A Pastry Blender is a
hand-held tool used both to
cut solid fat into flour, and
to blend it in thoroughly.
The fat can be lard, butter,
dripping, suet, shortening or
margarine. The act of what
you are doing is called
“cutting in the fat.” The
blender is used most often
for pastry dough, scone
dough, or baking powder
biscuit dough.They are
completely hand powdered. It consists of a handle that has half-moon
shaped wires attached to it at both ends. The handle can be metal, wood
or plastic. Wood is traditional. The finish on wood may deteriorate in the
dishwasher, but some people don’t care what it ends up looking life, they
just think wood is still more comfortable to use. The wires curve
downwards away from the handle at one end, and then upwards and
back into the other end of the handle. The wires can be thickish wires, or
metal blades. Wires are more traditional, and some say, more efficient
at even mixing because they are more flexible.
Rotary beaters are relatively
inexpensive, and are a great tool to
have around the kitchen. They are
available at most stores specializing
in kitchen accessories or the kitchen
department of most discount
retailers. It is possible to obtain a
good quality rotary beater that will
last for years, and requires little
more than routine cleaning and
care.
A refrigerator (colloquially
fridge) consists of a thermally
insulated compartment and a heat
pump (mechanical, electronic or
chemical) that transfers heat from
the inside of the fridge to its
external environment so that the
inside of the fridge is cooled to a
temperature below the ambient
temperature of the room.
Refrigeration is an essential food storage technique in developed
countries. The lower temperature lowers the reproduction rate of
bacteria, so the refrigerator reduces the rate of spoilage. A refrigerator
maintains a temperature a few degrees above the freezing point of water.
Optimum temperature range for perishable food storage is 3 to 5 °C (37
to 41 °F). A similar device that maintains a temperature below the
freezing point of water is called a freezer. The refrigerator replaced the
icebox, which had been a common household appliance for almost a
century and a half.
Deep Fryers, which may be known as Deep Fat Fryers or Flash Fryers, are
built for home use and commercial use, the difference typically being size
and features. Home fryers are smaller in size with smaller oil capacity
chambers and are built to fry less amounts of food so individual portions
or servings for only a few can be fried. Commercial varieties will often
contain larger capacity oil chambers for greater amounts of food. Deep
Fryers may consist simply of a deep walled pot made from cast iron, black
steel or stainless steel that are used on stovetops.
A toaster, or a toast maker, is an
electric small appliance designed to
toast sliced bread by exposing it to
radiant heat, thus converting it into
toast. Toasters can toast multiple
types of sliced bread products. ...
Toaster ovens function the same as a
small-scale conventional oven.
