Description
The vehicle is equipped with one horn mounted behind the front bumper on the right side. Operation of the
horn is controlled by a switch (horn button) located on the steering wheel. Electrical power from the positive
side of the battery is applied to a horn relay located under the lower panel of the steering column. When the
horn button is pressed, the horn relay is energized, and electrical power is directed to the horn. The circuit is
completed by the case-ground of the horn, and the horn sounds. When force is removed from the horn button,
springs force the button upward to open the horn switch. The relay is de-energized and horn operation stops.

When ignition is in "ON" position, instrument and switch lights are checked. If any light is inoperative, a
replacement of failed bulb should be made.
When replacing odometer assembly, law requires odometer reading of replacement unit to be set to same
mileage as prior odometer. If mileage cannot be set, law requires that replacement odometer be set at zero
and a label be installed on driver´s door frame to show previous odometer reading and date of replacement.
Description
The power door lock system is compreised fo the door lock assembly, power lock motor, inside door handle,
outside door handle, door lock cylinder, and door lock switch. This system is installed on all doors of the
vehicle. The system is activated by the driver’s side door which has a manual door lock system and a door lock
switch. The switch is connected to the time control unit.
The door lock assembly has four remote control rods.
One is attached to the power lock motor (power lock motor rod). The second is attached to the inside door
handle (inside door handle rod). The third is attached to the outside door handle (outside door handle rod). The
fourth rod is attached to the lock cylinder door the outside door handle9lock cylinder rod).
Pressing the door lock knob on the driver’s side door locks and unlocks the remaining three doors of the
vehicle. Pressing the driver’s side knob and closing the door while holding the outside handle locks all five
doors. Openin this door with a key automatically and closing the door without holing the outside handle unlocks
all the doors.
When the door lock knob of the front passenger door is pressed, and this door is closed while holding the
outside handle, only this door locks. If this door is closed without holing the outside handle, it remains
unlocked.
The two rear doors are locked by depressing the door lock knobs and closing the doors. These doors also have
safety locks which, when fuel lid cover is open, prohibit opening the doors from inside the vehicle.

Locked condition
The ICU will stay in the locked condition as long as no valid transponder code has been received. The ICU will
automatically go to locked condition a regular time after key OFF. As long as the ICU is n the locked condition, engine
cranking is impossible, since the ICU answers any ECM request with dummy data. Exceptions are made to this rule if
either the ECMor the ICU are in virgin state.
Unlocked condition
Only if the ICU is in the unlocked condition engine cranking is allowed, provided that the conditions about the MIN and
the respective status of the ICU and the ECM are verified.
Virgin status
This status represents the delivery condition of the ICU. The MIN has been programmed at the factory in EEPROM. The
VIN has not been programmed yet, it will be programmed at the car manufacturer's end-of-line test. In this status, if the
ECM is also in virgin state and the MIN of the ECM and the ICU are the same, engine cranking is allowed.
Learnt status
This represents the normal operating condition of the ICU, where the VIN has been learned. When the ECM sends a
request containing the same MIN, then if the ICU is unlocked, the response to the ECM will contain a code based on the
VIN. If the ICU is locked, the response will contain dummy data.
Neutralized status
To replace a part of the system (ICU, ECM), the ICU and the ECM have to be set to neutralized state by a <<read
passcode>> request from the diagnostic tool. In this status, engine start is never possible.
Following flow diagram shown the possible transitions between status.
Status vs condition
The following table shows ▦the possible condition according the different possible status of the ICU.

The transponder (inserted in the Key) has two stable positions (position 1 and position 2 on the figure above). Reading
the transponder in these conditions should be possible at 100% rate:
• in the temperature range
• in case of extreme values intervening in the coupling between transponder and coil, which are:
→ carrier frequency
→ turning frequency of the antenna resonant circuit
→ turning frequency of the transponder coil
→ minimum magnetic field of transponder good operation
→ mechanical tolerances of positioning (transponder in the key and coil on the SCL)
• when the system is submitted to an electromagnetic field
Functional description
The reading transponder procedure is initiated by a rising edge on the ignition input.
The transponder reading should be completed during a delay of 200ms after (+) ignition rising edge. This time includes 2
possible tentative of transponder reading.
During this delay all other requests are ignored. 5 transponders in total can be programmed in the EEPROM.
The result of this function execution is an EEPROM variable which contains the ICU condition, locked or unlocked.
The immobilizer is unlocked if the transponder code read is known and belongs to the list in the EEPROM.
It switches to the locked stats after a Tpa delay (EEPROM parameter time delay) after the (+) ignition falling edge
(Passive arming). Tpa is initialized to its minimum value which is one second.
The immobilizer is locked if the transponder is absent or the code read is unknown.

Diagnostic service
Refer to Kia Power Scan Tool Manual.
The following schematics shows the condition of the ICU depending on the state of the ignition at the end of the
sequence:
This service can be allowed only when the ICU status is not leant by setting an EEPROM flag. In case of learnt
status the sequence is not processed and the PIN is not changed.
Key management
In case of key matching (from a full test sequence or a key matching only):
• no key is learnt: the previous keys are kept.
• at least 1 key is learnt : the previous keys are erased, and replaced by the new ones.
Diagnostic sequence
1. The operator inserts a transponder key.
2. The test tool sends the PIN with option full test (program PIN) and a diagnostic request to the ICU.
3. The PIN is programmed and the ICU status changes to learnt.
4. The ICU activates the horn for 50 ms (Parameter 1)
5. The operator turns the key to IG ON position.
6. The ICU communicates with the ECM and unlocks it.
7. The operator turns the key to IG OFF position.
8. The operator depress the I/P SW (RR DEF. SW) for 500 ms minimum.
9. The horn sounds for 50 ms.
10. The operator turns the key to IG ON position.
11. The first transponder key is learned.
12. If the programming was OK, the lamp is ON for 250 ms.
13. The operator starts the engine.
14. The operator turns the key to IG OFF position and replaces it by the second key in less than 10 seconds.
15. The operator turns the key to IG ON position.
16. The second trans ponder key is learned.
17. If the programming was OK, the lamp is ON for 250 ms and the horn is activated for 50 ms (Parameter 1).
18. The operator starts the engine.
19. The operator turns the key to IG OFF position.
20. The status of the ICU is sent to the test tool (Kia Power Scan Tool).
ECM communication
For diesel vehicles the ICU communicates with an electrical fuel pump.
The ECM communication is initiates by the ECM ECU.
The ICU decrypts this request to get 3 bytes of fix code, then it compares this fix code with its MIN. If they are different or
if the ICU is in the locked condition, then it answers the ECM request with dummy data.
Otherwise, the answer frame is got from the encrypted MIN if the status of the ICU is virgin, and from the encrypted VIN,
and from the encrypted VIN if the status of the ICU is learnt of neutralized. The ECM type is extracted from the ECM
request and stored in EEPROM.
Relay communication
This function allows the communication between tester and ECM by shorting W-line and K-line together.
The ICU controls a relay which permits to connect the K(Diagnostic)-line with the W (ECM serial data)-line and
disconnect the internal W-line pull-up, to allow communication between the ECM and an external tester.
If the ICU recognizes a falling edge on the K-line, with a low level lasting more than 20 ms, it will closed the relay and
then disable the pull-up.
If the request is a 5 bauds wake-up addressed to the ICU, or if the K-line is seen idle for 10 seconds or a falling edge of
(+) ignition input appears, the pull-up is re-enabled and then the relay is released.
F_Try
F_Try is the counter counting wrong PIN entries.
• F_Try is incremented when a wrong PIN is entered.
• F_Try is reset:
→ when the correct PIN is entered
→ when the ignition is turned ON with a correct key
• F_Try is not modified when the PIN entry sequence is nor correctly performed by the user:
→ ignition is turned OFF
→ REAR DEF S/W is not pressed within the time-out
→ REAR DEF S/W is released before "1"
→ REAR DEF S/W is not released after "10" (symbolizing digit "0")
Inhibition
If a wrong PIN has been entered 5 times in a row. Inhibition means that engine crancking is not allowed (ie. the ICU is
locked), and that the PIN can not be entered. Each further incorrect try will increase the inhibit time by 20 seconds. The
maximum inhibition time is limited to 60 seconds. The inhibition is turned OFF:
• When the time-out is elapsed. In that case, the ICU remains locked, but the user may enter the PIN again.
• When the user turns the ignition ON with a correct key. In that case, the ICU is unlocked.
Note 1
The inhibition time-out is elapsed.
• If the ignition had remained ON: the lamp starts blinking at 2 Hz, in order to let the user know he may again tray and
enter the PIN.
• If the ignition is OFF: a rising edge on the ignition, with a correct key, will allow the engine cranking. If the key can not
be read, or is unknown, back to "Start" label.
Note 2
The inhibition is still active. When the user turns the ignition ON.
• the key can be read and is known: the inhibition is deactivated, and F_Tray is reset. Engine cranking is allowed.
• the key can not be read or is unknown: the inhibition time-out is re-initialized, and engine cranking not allowed. By
leaving the ignition ON long enough to let the time-out elapse, we are sent back to note 1.
Note 3
Since F_Try is less than 5, there is no inhibition. Therefore, when the user turns the ignition ON.
• the key can be read and is known: F_ Try is reset, and engine cranking is allowed.
• the key can not be read or is unknown: back to "Start" label.
The lamp starts blinking 2 Hz provided the ignition is left ON.
The ignition time-out does not run when the ignition is OFF. The following shows the effect of the ignition on the time-out
after a PIN-entry sequence (5th attempt):
