Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
Before incorporating an Online Project, collaboration site, and/or publishing opportunities into my classroom
I would send home a permission form to all students’ parents and/or guardians. For Internet Safety and
Student Privacy Policies it is important to ensure that as an educator, to take all extra precautions. Once all
permission forms are turned in, I will go over all internet safety protocols with the class. To begin the
implementation of the lesson, students will have a standard to meet and this will be during English Language
Arts. I will allow the students to choose a topic of their interest to create a narrative piece on. I will introduce
KidPub to the students and show them a step-by-step walk through of how to work the collaboration site.
Once the students have completely finished writing their narrative, they will post their original work onto
KidPub. On the collaboration site, KidPub, students are able to talk to other students and their peers about
writing, as well as, provide and receive feedback on original writing pieces.
After the students publish their writing, I will have the students reply to one of their classmates and a new
friend online in their age group (3rd grade) – reminding them to not share any personal information and to
take all internet safety precautions. Once students have responded to two children, they should go to their
original writing and read any feedback they received and update their writing to what they believe is needed.
Their writing will never be deleted unless they want it to so students can go back to the KidPub site after a
week or two for even more feedback and comments. Once the students final product is create they will
submit it to KidPub one last time for the monthly writing contests.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Each student will be required to have access to the internet by any mobile device: laptop, iPad, computer, etc.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will be using the online site, KidPub, where they are able to publish their original work
to an audience.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will enter their writing piece into a contest on
the collaboration site, KidPub.
c. Higher-order thinking: Students will have to create their own original writing piece, publish the
writing for feedback, as well as, give feedback to peers and others.

Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: KidPub is a
safe public collaboration site where the students are able to publish their original work to others, their
peers, teacher, and/or parents who care about their product.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): KidPub provides multiples means of representation, action and
expression, and engagement for student learning. Through KidPub students are able to choose between
multiple topics that grabs their interest in wanting to write about it. They are able to use technology when
creating their narrative pieces which can help certain learners that struggle with writing and spelling on
paper. Students are able to be engaged with their peers and others through publishing on this collaboration
site.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:
Before implementation, the teacher should review all Internet Safety and Student Privacy Policies for the
state and district. Before this lesson, I will send home a permission letter to all parents and/or guardians to
grant permission to their child to be able to access the internet and/or publish their writing. The teacher
should go over the Internet Safety and Student Privacy Policies with the students and post them visually to
ensure they understand. The teacher should have the students create a nickname or only use their first name
when posting anything online.
Reflective Practice:
Within this learning opportunity students are engaging with their peers and others about their writing,
allowing feedback for improvement and growth. Students will be able to create an original piece, choosing a
topic of their interest, and publishing to provide and receive feedback which can and cannot be applied. To
extend this lesson, I would have students apply any necessary feedback to their writing and republish their
finished product.
