c. Utilize the concepts of the theory in the implementation of nursing care
III. Topic Outline/Content
Hildegard Peplau states that the nursing is a therapeutic because it is an art of

healing. It is considered that the nursing process is an interpersonal relationship between
the nurse and the client because they interact with each other with the same goals.
Major Concepts:
 Man as an organism that strives to pass through the tensions generated by
needs.
 Health as a directive action that implies moving forward, creative, productive,
personal and community living.
 Society/environment even though she did not address directly, she
encourages that a nurse should consider the client's beliefs, culture and mores in
adjusting hospital routines.
 Nursing is an interpersonal relationship between the client that is sick and an
individual that seek attention and health services.
Four phases of Therapeutic nurse-patient relationship:

1. Orientation phase indicates that the nurse should explain thoroughly to the client
what should be done in order for the patient to understand the situation and
cooperate informatively.
2. Identification phase states that the client already interacting with the nurse
through cooperative way and for that the client is getting stronger.
3. Exploitation phase states that the client is making full use of the services offered
by the nurse.
4. Resolution phase states that the client is no longer in need of assistance from the
nurse.
Roles of a Nurse in the Therapeutic relationship:
 Stranger
 Resource person
 Teacher
 Leader
 Surrogate
 Counselor
She also states that a nurse can be in so many roles in attaining the relationship such as
being a consultant, tutor, safety agent, mediator, administrator and others.
Levels of Anxiety:
 Mild anxiety
 Moderate anxiety
 Severe anxiety
 Panic anxiety
IV. Learning Procedure

a. Pre-Lesson
The facilitators will provide an activity for the students regarding the Theory of
Interpersonal Relations. In this activity, the students will be formed into five groups with
9 members each.

b. Lesson Proper
The facilitators will engage the students to an activity called Paint Me a Picture. In this
activity, the students are grouped into five with 9 members each. This time, the
facilitators will give a certain situation or a scene to the groups. Using only their bodies,
every group must illustrate the scene. At a given signal, everyone freezes. Points are
given to group/s who portrayed creatively and realistically. After every scene illustrated
by the groups, the facilitators will provide explanations in relation to the theory of
Hildegard Peplau.

1. Therapeutic Nurse-Patient relationship
2. Role of a Nurse as a Surrogate
3. Panic anxiety
4. Role of a Nurse as a Teacher
5. Mild anxiety
c. Post-Lesson
The facilitators will have an evaluation of the students through a 10-item quiz. This quiz
will determine the students’ listening and understanding skills towards the topic.
