(5) Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
(6) Use of non – programmable calculator, Steam tables, Mollier's chart, Thermodynamic
tables for moist air, Psychrometric charts and Refrigeration charts is permitted.
(7) List of Constants : Specific heat Capacity (Cp) of air : 1000 J / kg / K,
Gas Constant (R) of air : 287 J / kg / K and Adiabatic index (γ) of air : 1.4.
1. (a) Describe the working of single stage single acting reciprocating compressor
and derive the correlation for work per unit cycle with no clearance volume.
Draw indicator (P – v) diagram.

(b) A single stage single acting reciprocating compressor has a bore and stroke
of 90 mm and 100 mm respectively with clearance of 10 mm. It runs at
600 rpm Ambient pressure and temperature is 1 bar and 300 K Volume
of air per revolution after compression is 1.7265 x 10 – 4 m3 and after expansion
is 2.5785 x 10 – 4 m3. Delivery pressure is 5.0 bar. Draw indicator diagram
and determine
(i) Volumetric efficiency
(ii) Mass flow rate of air in kg / s
(iii) Indicated Power in kW
(iv) Isothermal efficiency. 7
(b) With the help of neat sketch, describe the working of centrifugal compressor.
Draw T – s diagram in detail, showing static and stagnation conditions.

3. (a) With the help of neat sketch, describe the working of lobe type compressor.
Draw P – v diagram for the same.
OR
(b) An axial compressor, compresses air from 1 bar, 300 K to 8 bar. When
running at 9000 RPM. temperature rise per stage is 20 K. Mean blade
velocity is 200 m / s and velocity of flow is 150 m / s. Polytropic efficiency
of compressor is 0.9. Number of stages is 10. Degree of reaction is
0.45 Area of flow at inlet of 5th stage is 200 cm2. Determine
(i) Overall pressure ratio
(ii) Mass flow rate in kg / s
(iii) Power required to compress the air
(iv) Draw velocity polygon and determine all angles. 7
4. (a) Describe working of 4 stroke petrol engine with valve timing and indicator
diagram.
(b) The following data is given for a 4 stroke, 4 cylinder diesel engine :
Diameter of the cylinder : 35 cm, Piston stroke : 40 cm,
Speed of the engine : 315 rpm, Indicated mean effective pressure : 7 bar,
B. P. of the engine 260 kW, Fuel consumption : 80 kg / hr.
C. V. of the fuel used : 43000 kJ / kg , Air consumption : 30 kg / min.
Cooling water circulated : 90 kg / min.
Rise in temperature of cooling water : 380C,
Piston cooling oil used : 45 kg / min. Rise in temperature of cooling
oil : 230C
CP for cooling oil : 2.2 kJ / kg – K.
Exhaust gas temp. : 3220C , CP for Exhaust gases : 1.1 kJ / kg – K.
Ambient temperature : 220C,
Find :
(i) The mechanical and indicated thermal efficiency
(ii) Draw up heat balance sheet on minute basis. 8
(b) With the help of schematic diagram, describe Linde Hampson Cycle for
liquefication of air. Draw T – s diagram for the same. 7
(c) A refrigeration plant using NH3 as a refrigerant works between 250C and
– 150C. The refrigerant is dry saturated at the exit of the compressor.
Find the ice formed per day if the ice is formed at 00C from the water
at 200C. Quantity of refrigerant circulated is 10 kg / min. CP (water)
= 4.2 kJ / kg – K. Latent heat of ice = 335 kJ / kg. Also determine the power
required by the compressor.
OR
6. (a) Define specific enthalpy of air and derive its correlation 1.5 kg of dry air
contains 20 mg of water vapour at 300C DBT and at 970 mbar pressure.
Determine
(i) Specific humidity of air
(ii) DPT of air
(iii) Relative humidity of air
(iv) Specific enthalpy of air.
OR
(d) The atmospheric air is at 300C dry bulb temp and at 75% relative humidity
enters cooling coil at the rate of 200 m3 / min. The coil dew point temperature
140C and the bypass factor of the coil is 0.1. Determine
(i) the temperature of air leaving the cooling coil
(ii) the capacity of the cooling coil in tones of refrigeration and
in kilowatt
(iii) The amount of water vapour removed per minute
(iv) The sensible heat factor for the process. 7
