Compare Shannon-Weaver Model and the Transaction Model of Communication by
answering the question:

1.What are their Similarities?

 Shannon-Weaver Model and the Transaction Model of Communication have a similarity because
both of them introduces a hindrance for effective or successful communication. In Shannon-Weaver
Model it introduces the “Noise” one of the hindrance for effective communication and example of
hindrance in Transactional model, is that the employee cannot comprehend or understood the
message of the employer because the employer cannot go down to the level of the employee so that
is why the communication is a failure. That the position or the context of communication could be
one of the hindrances for successful communication.

 The Shannon-Weaver Model and the Transaction Model of Communication have a same purpose
and that is there similarity, is that they both have the ability to transmits the message or information
to the receiver.

2. What are their Difference?

 Shannon-Weaver Model doesn’t have Feedback because in this model the communication occurred
when the message has been sent and received including the fact that here there is a sender and a
receiver, while in Transactional Model the persons are both Senders and Receivers means that they
both giving each other Feedbacks that’s why this model also called Circular Model while the other
is Linear Model.

 Shannon-Weaver Model doesn’t capture the “Face to Face Dynamic” because the model reflects
the time in the place where it was created, on 1940’s both Shannon and Weaver came up with this
model and working in the telephone industry, so it has this technology angle where it helps explain
texting well and some kind of information on technology but is doesn’t capture the “Face to Face
Dynamic” also in here it’s missing the Non-Verbal Communication. So, after some years, Barnlund
and Watzlawick made the transactional model which helps people to understand the “Face to Face
interaction” because here we can both use Verbal and Non-Verbal communication.

 Shannon-Weaver is a one process consisting of five elements: Source, Transmitter, Channel,

Receiver and a Destination. While Transaction Model is a two-way process. This model is more
interactive because there is a collaborative exchange of messages between communicators.

 In Transactional Model, the sending and receiving the message are affected by the Context (setting
of work) because it shape how you send and receive the message and Field of Experience this
means that we all have value and believe that also affect how our interpretation on the message and
how we send a message, some factor may also be a noise. While in the Shannon-Weaver the
message may be interfere with only the “Noise” that affects how the receiver received it clearly.
