ABSTRACT

COLOMA, BRYAN C., PASCUAL, MARVIN C. Divine Word College of Laoag-

School of Education, Laoag City. March 2017. Enhancing Pupils Reading
Comprehension Through Mother Tongue-Based Approach. Major Advisers: Mrs.
Caroline S. Andres and Mrs. Emiliaflor A. Lived.

This study aimed to promote Mother tongue-based approach in enhancing the

reading comprehension of Grades 5-Sapphire and 6-Neptune pupils. It was conducted

in one elementary school in Ilocos Norte which is Gabaldon Elementary School.

A 10- item teacher made test covering the macro skills in reading was used as a

pretest to determine the ability of the pupils to comprehend the story presented. The

same type of test was used as a posttest to identify whether the pupils have developed

their reading comprehension skills through the use Mother tongue-based approach in

teaching particularly in the English and Filipino subject.

It was revealed in the findings that the pupils have developed their reading skills

particularly in sequencing events. Hence, it is recommended that the teachers have to

use mother tongue-based approach in the discussion process particularly in enhancing

reading comprehension skills of their pupils.

It is, therefore, desirable for Grade 5 and 6 teachers to adopt the use of mother

tongue-based approach in the teaching process. It makes learners learn better and

easily.
