MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME IN TOURISM, CULTURE AND

INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT

TourCIM programme is based on the belief that the socio-cultural dimension is essential
in fully understanding and implementing responsible tourism - It´s contemporary,
innovative management.

1. STUDENT SELECTION

Student intake for the TourCIM master's degree programme is max. ten (10) students.
Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the application form and the required
enclosures.

Applicants are given points for their previous degree, essay and motivation letter. The
maximum score is 25. Students with highest points are selected. If two or more
applicants have the same lowest accepted score, all with the same lowest accepted
score will be selected. Academically most qualified (success/grades in previous degree)
will be selected.

1. Degree (5 / 10 points)

If an applicant has more than one completed degree, the one that gives the highest
score is selected. Students graduating during the academic year 2017–2018 (after the
application period) must enclose their official credit transcript and the expected date of
graduation to the application. The official degree certificate must be delivered to the
University of Lapland upon enrollment in July. The exact date will be confirmed with the
student selection results. Otherwise the applicant will lose her/his study place.
Points are given as follows:

1) bachelor’s or master's degree in the field of tourism 10 points

2) bachelor’s or master's degree in another

field of study containing 60 credits in tourism 5 points

2. Essay (0–10 points)

Applicants are to read the following book: Edelheim, Johan R. (2015) Tourist Attractions –
From Object to Narrative. Bristol: Channel View Publications. Based on the book and
previous knowledge of the field, applicants are to write an essay of 3–4 pages. It should
discuss how to responsibly create and maintain cultural tourist attractions in a chosen
geographical area, according to the applicant’s own interests. The essay should be titled:
‘Managing cultural tourist attractions in a responsible way’.

The essay will be assessed on:


a) how well the essay follows general academic essay structures – including referencing,
b) how well the applicants have included the book’s theories in their essay,
C) how well the applicants have utilized other academic sources to back up their
arguments,
D) how well the applicant’s analysis responds to and resolves the main concepts given in
the heading of the essay.

3. Motivation letter (0–5 points)

A letter of motivation should answer to these questions:

• Why do you think that the University of Lapland and the TourCIM master’s degree
programme are interesting and suitable for you?

• How can your earlier studies and professional experiences support your TourCIM
studies?
• What are your main challenges of studying in the TourCIM master’s degree
programme?

• What are your career goals and how does the TourCIM master’s degree
programme help you achieve them?

In addition, the motivation letter can also describe the applicant’s hobbies,
organizational activities, work experience and previous long-term periods abroad.
The motivation letter is written in English and it should be no longer than A4 (one
page) in length.

2. PROGRAMME-SPECIFIC APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

International applicants who meet the eligibility criteria may apply for the Master’s
Degree Programme in Tourism, Culture and International Management. The online
application on the Studyinfo portal (www.studyinfo.fi) is only open during the application
period. The application period opens on December 1st 2017 and closes on January 15th
2018 at 15:00 (GMT +2).

Submit an electronic application form through University Admissions Finland and send
all the required enclosures to the University Admissions Finland’s office by mail by the
given deadline. UAF processes all documents in the order of arrival, so it is in your best
interest to submit your application documents as soon as possible. It is acceptable to
submit documents already before submitting the online application. E-mail attachments
will not be accepted. UAF does not process the application documents that have arrived
after the deadline.

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

• An officially certified copy of the applicant’s bachelor’s degree certificate in the


original language (applicants graduating after the deadline must enclose their
official credit transcript and the expected date of graduation to the application.)
• An official English, Swedish or Finnish translation of the degree certificate OR an
officially certified copy of the Diploma Supplement in English (pertains to
graduates of universities within the EU)
• An officially certified copy of the transcript of the applicant’s bachelor’s degree in
the original language.
• An official English, Swedish or Finnish translation of the transcript of the bachelor’s
degree
• Language certificate (see language requirements above)
• A copy of your passport's ID page
• Letter of motivation stating why the applicant is applying for the programme
• A summary or an abstract of the final thesis (written assignment or research
project) in the previous degree
• A Curriculum Vitae (CV)

You may also enclose:


• A Recommendation Letter from former teacher or instructor.

University Admissions Finland does not accept regular photocopies of educational


documents. All educational documents must either be officially certified (attested) by the
awarding institution, or legalised. For some countries there are country-specific document
requirements that must be followed first and foremost before any other requirements for
document attestation. Please check if there are any country-specific requirements for your
degree-awarding country at www.universityadmissions.fi and then follow the instructions.
In addition, officially certified copies issued by a Finnish Notary Public are accepted. Please
note that officially certified copies issued by notaries public in other countries are not
accepted without legislation.

If your educational documents are issued in a language other than English, Finnish or
Swedish, official translations of them to one of these languages are required. Officially
certified copies of the original documents must also be submitted. An official translation
must be one of the following:
a) issued by the awarding institution
b) an officially certified copy of a translation issued by the awarding institution
c) translated by an official translator
d) an officially certified copy of a translation made by an official translator

Each page of an official translation must bear the translator’s stamp and/or signature.
Official translations must be exact translations of the original documents. Translations
done by the applicant him- or herself are not accepted.
The authenticity of all documents will be examined and the submission of forged
documents will lead to automatic rejection of the applicant.

Current students of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lapland, may apply for
the programme outside the quota. The above-mentioned eligibility criteria apply also for
these applicants. Those wishing to apply for the Master’s Degree Programme in Tourism,
Culture and International Management should deliver the application form (Sisäinen
siirto) and other required documents by January 15th 2018 (15:00 GMT +2) to the

can be printed from http://www.ulapland.fi/hakulomakkeet.

3. SELECTION RESULTS AND APPEALING

The results of the admission will be published on by March 26th at the latest. Information
about the results and the beginning of the programme will be announced to all
applicants by email.

Accepting the study place


Students admitted to the programme must accept or decline their study place by
notifying the Student services office of the University of Lapland by April 26th 2018.
Admitted students who fail to notify the University whether they wish to accept their
place or fail to submit the required documents by the due date will have waived their
right to study.

A request for rectification and appeal


Applicants dissatisfied with the admissions decision may appeal to the Dean of the
Faculty of Social Sciences. The appeal must be submitted in writing and indicate in detail
the decision against which the appeal is submitted as well as the grounds for the appeal.
The appeal must arrive at the Registrar of the University of Lapland within 14 days of the
publication of the admission decision. Applicants dissatisfied with the decision of the
Dean may appeal to the Administrative Court. Decisions made by the Administrative
Court are not subject to appeal.
