INTRODUCTION TO CSR
What is Corporate Social Responsibility?

According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, CSR is “the continuing
commitment by business to contribute to economic development while improving the quality of
life of the workforce and their families, as well as of the community and society at large.” CSR,
in its essence, looks beyond profits and instead focuses on how business can benefit the greater
community.

“Corporate Social Responsibility”, or CSR, is something that was started by fashionable

‘ethical’ businesses. Realising that promoting a responsible way of doing business actually
improved the bottom line soon received wider interest, and now demonstrating responsibility has
become expected when bidding for major contracts. With now being the time to question your
organisation’s value, see the benefits of CSR by reading on below.

The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility can be explained quite simply; it is doing the
right thing. Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR for short, is about how your organisation’s
existence affects stakeholders beyond your own insular interests, recognising the impact your
operations have on the community at large.

Adopting CSR considers how you can use this impact in a positive way, leading to sustainable
growth and financial gains. Over the years, CSR has become more and more popular; back in
2007 more than 80% of the FTSE 100 index reported on Corporate Social Responsibility within
their Annual Report.

Well recognised names, such as Google, well known for their “Do No Evil” slogan, helped
popularise what was once considered something only done by ‘do-gooders’. Now, almost all
major brands have CSR policies, some of which can be seen below.

3
Importance to CSR

Social responsibility is important to a business because it demonstrates to both consumers and

the media that the company takes an interest in wider social issues that have no direct impact
on profit margins. These issues may be local, national or global, but a concern for the health and
wellness of others that does not involve sales can be seen as commendable, if handled well.

For this reason, evidence of a healthy social responsibility policy can impact buying decisions
where customers seek to make an ethical purchase. This, in turn, can lead to greater profits for a
business. However, building a highly regarded and trustworthy reputation is more valuable in
this instance, and observers appreciate that social responsibility initiatives take time to establish
and manage.

Furthermore, being part of a scheme that helps disadvantaged people or those otherwise in need
can help boost morale for employees within the responsible company. Along with other methods
of morale boosting, this can lead to greater productivity among the workforce. Knowledge that a
product and service has a great influence on social causes can be a genuine delight to employees,
customers and business owners alike. Over time, the business contribution to a charity, cause or
community can be a significant amount of charitable funds, product donations or other ventures.

When the importance of social responsibility is recognized as part of a business's foundation, the
impact of such endeavours can have life-changing consequences for recipients of aid and,
equally, instil a sense of pride in the people who support and work toward its growth. A business
can grow with or without social responsibility, but doing good for others allows a business to
reap rewards in many ways.

Solutions
1) Gramin Bhandaran Yojana- This government scheme is very convenient and would
be suitable for the villagers of the village Sanathal, As the main focus of this Yojna is to
create agricultural prosperity amongst the farmers of the villagers. By this scheme the
Farmers of Sanathal village would be able to keep their food grains in a well-equipped
facility given by the government where they can store the produce for the whole year and
can sell it according to their business also a hallmark would be given as the scheme is
providing a service standardization of product.

2) Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra- This scheme of the Government is
utmost the beneficial factor for Sanathal villagers. When we carried our visit to the
village no Hospitals or public welfare units were found to give villagers a sense of relief
when the time comes. Just because of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra the
villagers would be at least able to get generic medicines for low prices which can
improve their health.

3) When discussed with the citizens of the villagers and the sarpanch we found out that in
spite of reporting their problems many a times to the Taluka Panchayat and also a
government body located in Gandhinagar no response was there to the problems faced by
them. We as students are going to report their problem in near future to the Taluka
Panchayat or to the government body located in Gandhinagar for the upliftment and
betterment of the villagers.

Experience

Experience is to do or to go around practically and observe various new things and facts. We
observed and came to know that they were so kind, helpful to each other and even to strangers.
No kind of greediness, anger etc. on their face and they were so humble and calm while talking
to us and were fully supportive.

Importantly, we learnt that how to live and celebrate each and every thing and to find happiness
in small things and in others happiness. And one should be satisfied with what they have.

Even children were active, enthusiastic, and happy and more over out of the so called world of
social media where as in big cities 6-12 month kid is enjoying using phone. While here we found
that children were busy playing with each other and nature.

So, it was great experience with lot of fun from the moment we started our journey till we
returned.
