4. CONCLUSION
1. PROJECT SUMMARY

In this assignment, 10 members of us were asked to find a registered NGO to carry out a
community service. Therefore we plan out some activities to spread our love to the children.
The orphanage home we are planning to visit is Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Terencat
Akal Malaysia at Bukit Gasing, Petaling Jaya.

2. ORGANIZATION PROFILE

Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Terencat Akal Malaysia is taking care of mentally

challenged children of all ages. They believe that the children are their precious gems of lives
despite their disabilities in taking care of themselves, communications, studies. The age range
of the children is at 3-73 years old.

3. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

3.1 PROBLEM STATEMENT

LACK OF FUNDS:

NGOs are expressing difficulty in finding sufficient, appropriate and continuous funding for
their work. They find accessing donors as challenging as dealing with their funding
conditions. They have limited resource mobilization skills which further restrict them to carry
out their projects to raise additional funds in order to maintain daily expenses.

ABSENCE OF STRATEGIC PLANNING:

Few NGOs have strategic plans which would enable them to have ownership over their
mission, values and activities. This leaves them vulnerable to the whims of donors and makes
it difficult to measure their impact over time.

LACK OF PROPER NETWORKING:

For some NGOs it is difficult to network. Having poor network with pairs can lead to lack of
communication, if non-governmental organizations do not disclose what they are doing for a
certain community, efforts could be duplicated, conflicts about the ways a certain problem
should be faced in a region could arise, and they could be missing the opportunity to learn
best practices from other NGOs.

3.2 RATIONALE

Recognizing that all individuals in a community share a social responsibility to help and
support others meet their needs and goals, students will participate in community service for
the NGO to help individuals or groups and to show appreciation to others in the communities
who provide services to the children.
3.3 PROJECT GOAL AND OBJECTIVES

Community service aims to expose students to people who are at a disadvantage (socially,
medically, economically, or otherwise). It helps students to realize that they can make a
difference and they have the potential to do that. In other words, community service will help
build our awareness and better understanding of the communities we live in. It also produces
a community of caring and committed individuals. This topic essentially aims  to prepare us
for lifelong learning and to strengthen a sense of civic consciousness and obligations among
members challenging them their values, priorities and world view. Through this activity, the
development of teamwork, communication skills and social responsibilities is promoted.

3.4 PROJECT OUTCOMES/IMPACT TO NGO

Engaging in community service provides students with the opportunity to become active
members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large.
Community service or volunteerism enables students to acquire life skills and knowledge, as
well as provide a service to those who need it most. Participating in community service not
only makes a difference to the organization and people being served, but also makes a
difference to every student’s career prospects.

3.6 TARGET BENEFICIARIES

Target beneficiaries also called the target group of the project, are the ones that will benefit
from this initiative. They are the people we want to change the circumstances of executing
our proposal. They may be directly or indirectly influenced by the project.

This project will bring benefits to the children in the orphanage. For example, we may help
out with their daily activities, play games or talk with them. The most important thing is we
hope that the children will have a great time. Additionally, volunteering will bind the students
to the community and by doing this so, it provides us an opportunity to become active
members of the community, strengthen interpersonal skills and expand our skill set by
making us step beyond our normal routine.
3.7 ENGAGEMENT IN THE COMMUNITY

We are expected to do community service activity outside our campus and therefore we have
decided to volunteer ourselves at Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Terencat Akal located at
Bukit Gasing, Petaling Jaya. We are engaging with the community by lending a helping hand
to those who need it. Playing a role as a volunteer is definitely a good start to change our
community for the better. Besides, we are not permitted to donate funds to the charity, as
volunteering and physical assistance will be more meaningful. As a result, we have planned a
series of activities to be carried out with the children in the charity. Although this may not
change the current condition of the charity, we sincerely hope that our acts may offer them a
joyful remembrance.

4. CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we believe that community service is a worthy cause that will do a great deal
of good for many people. Attempting to work together in such a large group as a team or
monitoring and handling the kids, both need patience and understanding. Another thing to
note is that after seeing and looking at the current conditions of the children, we have also
realized how fortunate we are to be able to have a proper education, food and shelter in this
current state. It was certainly a privilege to be able to help and educate, and also show love
and support to orphanage children. Seeing the smile on their faces really does make our day
and make us feel the pleasure of doing these little things. If we had a chance to do this again
in the future, we would undoubtedly want to volunteer and help out.
