CONDITIONAL STATEMENT
A conditional statement, symbolized by p q, is an if-then statement in which p is a

hypothesis and q is a conclusion. The logical connector in a conditional statement is
denoted by the symbol. The conditional is defined to be true unless a true hypothesis
leads to a false conclusion.
CONVERSE, INVERSE, & CONTRAPOSITIVE:
Three new conditionals are formed by making some changes in the original conditional
statement. These new conditionals are called the inverse, converse, and contrapositive.
THE INVERSE:
The inverse is formed by negating the hypothesis and negating the conclusion.
Ex. p → q: If you have a Sprite, then you have a root beer.

~ p → ~ q: If you do not have a Sprite, then you do not have a root beer.
THE CONVERSE:
The converse is formed by interchanging the hypothesis and the conclusion.
Ex. p → q: If it rained, then the ground got wet.

q → p: If the ground got wet, then it rained.
THE CONTRAPOSITIVE:
The contrapositive is formed by negating both the hypothesis and the conclusion, and
then interchanging the resulting negations.
Ex. p → q: If 15 is an odd number, then 15 is a prime number.

~ q → ~ p: If 15 is not a prime number, then 15 is not an odd number.
*** Anytime you are asked for the logical equivalent of a conditional, you always use
the contrapositive!!!
Try these examples out:
In 1 – 4, write the inverse of the statement in symbolic form.

In 5 – 8, write the converse of the statement in symbolic form.
5) p → q 6) t → ~ w 7) ~ m → p 8) q → p
In 9 – 12, write the contrapositive of the statement in symbolic form.
9) p → q 10) t → ~ w 11) ~ m → p 12) ~ q → ~ p
In 13 – 15, circle the correct answer.
13) When p → q is true, which related conditional must be true?

a) q → p b) ~ p → ~ q c) p → ~ q d) ~ q → ~ p
14) Which is the contra positive of “If winter comes, then spring is not far behind”?
a) If spring is not far behind, then winter comes.
b) If spring is far behind, then winter comes.

15) Which is the converse of “If a polygon is a rectangle, then its area does not equal l •

a) If a polygon is not a rectangle, then its area does not equal l • w • h.

c) If a polygon has an area that does not equal l • w • h, then it is not a rectangle.
d) If the area of a rectangle is l • w • h, then it is a polygon.

25) If you use Trickle deodorant, then you won’t have body odor.
26) If you brush with Brite, then your teeth will be pearly white.
27) If you want a good job, then you’ll get a high school diploma.
In 28 – 35, a conditional statement is given. Write in words

a) the inverse, b) the converse, and c) the contrapositive of that conditional.
28) If today is Friday, then tomorrow is Saturday.

29) If Douglas does well in college, then he will apply to medical school.
30) Arlette will get a role in the play if she auditions.
31) Dorothea will graduate from law school in January if she takes courses this summer.
32) If John is accepted at the Culinary Institute, then he has a chance of earning a high
salary as a chef.
33) If a man is honest, he does not steal.
34) If Julia doesn’t water the plants, then the plants will die.
35) Rachel will not get her allowance if she forgets to do her chores.
