ACTIVITY 1
“Who is Filipino”
ANALYSIS:
1. How do the pictures remind you of yours being a Filipino?
If you end up in the presence of Filipinos for an extended period of time, you can expect the
visitor hospitality to turn into genuine familial love. Filipinos are very family-oriented and
there is usually no longer a distinction among extended family, close family friends, or even
your parents’ childhood best friends. So yes, once an honorary member of a Filipino family,
you can also expect to be invited to all of their fun and food-filled gatherings.
2. Are you proud of being Filipino? Why or why not?
I feel very proud to be a Filipino, more so during tough times such as what we are going
through. I see us as a nation stepping up and doing what is necessary, to drive people to
families from Villamor Airbase to different parts of the Philippines, no questions asked, to
chefs contributing time, talent and treasure without any question, because damayan is a
word that is very strong in every Filipinos heart. In times of calamity and turmoil, we are
resilient and optimistic! That’s why I am proud to be a Filipino.
3. Imagine that you were a different nationality. What would you change in you aside from
your citizenship and origin?
A lot. From the language that we speak at home. From the friends you would have known
since you were small. From the kind of nutrition that you received since small. From the way
your parents behave and treat you since you were small. The kind of surrounding community
and society we were exposed into. The kind of educational institution you would have been
attending since you were small together with different sets of your friend's mentality and
behaviors. The kind of televisions you watched and the culture you exposed yourself into.
Basically everything would have changed. Including maybe having a different future that the
future I have now, hey, you can even become a president of the United States were you born
as an American.
4. How extensive are the effects of being Filipino in your selfhood?
Very significant. Being raised in the Philippines and having spent my entire life here of course
have had big effects in my selfhood. From a scientific stand point, a human being's
personality/selfhood is influenced by genetics and "environment". Every individual I’m sure
you know is different but there are aspects in an individual's self that is influenced by the
environment (e.g. nationality, location, family, affiliations) I hope this explanation is enough
to satisfy your curiosity.
Activity 2: Music Video Analysis
1. What do you think is the message of the song. #PILIPINO GALING NATIN ITO? Can you
name some of the characteristics that describes you as a Filipino?
Filipinos have been described as friendly, outgoing, sensitive, easily offended, nosy,
garrulous, direct, hospitable, feisty, irreverent, good natured, clever, witty, gregarious,
happy, generous, easy to laugh, gracious, easy to befriend, casual, fun loving, sensitive and
hospitable. Personal and family honor are stressed, as well as dignity and pride. Education is
highly valued and families make great sacrifices to educate their children. Hiya (shame) is
instilled in Filipinos at an early age. To be shamed is the greatest form of disgrace. Filipino
culture developed over centuries in tandem with and in response to Western culture
introduced by the Spanish and later Americans.
2. How unity, resiliency and greatness of Filipinos will contribute to strong nation building?
In the wake of economic chaos, miseries, political struggles and socio-moral devastation, we
should be united for the common purpose of helping to improve the lot of the masses. To
define our role today, we must speak not only of our courage, integrity and loyalty to
democracy, but our compassion for our fellow men. We must stand in the frontline of true
service and have to endure great sacrifices to help the needy, the sick, the poor and the
hopeless, and the victims of injustice. The road will not be easy, but if we work together, we
can help build a new Philippines.
3. As a Filipino, what can you think are your strong characteristics as an individual? Why?
Hospitality. This is one of the most popular qualities of Filipinos. Foreigners who have gone to
the Philippines find themselves falling in love with the warm hospitality they are shown. It's a
different kind of value system, which has existed for thousands of years. Here are some
examples of the hospitality that Filipinos show, not only to foreigners, but also to their fellow
citizens.
Strong Family Ties and Religions. Yes. Filipinos value their families so much that they tend to
keep families intact through the generations.
