PART B (Answer All Questions) ( 5 X 16 = 80)
11 Two vertical rods one of steel and other of copper each rigidly fixed at the top and
50cm apart. Diameters and lengths of each rod are 2cm and 4cm respectively. A cross
bar fixed to the rods at the lower ends carries a load of 5000 N such that the cross bar 16
remains horizontal even after loading. Find the stress in each rod and the position of
the load on the bar. Assume E for steel = 2X105 MPa and E for copper = 1 X105 MPa.
12 A steel tube of 30mm external diameter and 20mm internal diameter encloses a copper
rod of 15mm diameter to which it is rigidly joined at each end. If , at a temperature of
10OC there is no longitudinal stress, calculate the stresses in the rod and tube when the
temperature is raised to 200OC. Assume E for steel and copper as 2.1X105 MPa and 16
1X105 Mpa respectively. The value of co-efficient of linear expansion for steel and
copper is given as 11 X10-6 per OC and 18X10-6 per OC.

15 A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/8 is to transmit 375kW power at 100rpm. The
maximum torque being 20% greater than the mean. The shear stress is not to exceed
60MPa and twist in a length of 4m not to exceed 2O. Calculate its external and internal
16
diameters which would satisfy both the above conditions. Assume modulus of rigidity,
C= 0.85X105 MPa.

16 The stiffness of a close-coiled helical spring is 1.5N/mm of compression under a
maximum load of 60N. The maximum shearing stress produced in the wire of the
spring is 125MPa. The solid length of the spring is given as 5cm. Find (i) diameter of 16
the wire (ii) mean diameter of the coils and (iii) number of coils required. C= 4.5X104
MPa.
17 Derive the equation for maximum deflection of a cantilever beam with a point load at
the free end. 16

18 Derive the expression for crippling load for a column when both ends of the column
are hinged. 16
19 The stresses at appoint in a bar are 200MPa (tensile) and 100 MPa(compressive).
Determine the resultant stress in magnitude and direction on a plane inclined at an
angle of 60O to the axis of the major stress. Also determine the maximum intensity of 16
shear stress in the material at the point.
