AE 1202 – SOLID MECHANICS

AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING
Time: Three Hours Maximum: 100 marks
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
PART─A (10×2=20 marks)

1. How many elastic constants are required to express the stress-strain


relation for an isotropic material?

2. Explain with suitable examples statically determinate and


indeterminate problems.

3. Write down the relations between load intensity, shear force and
bending moment.

4. Define beam of uniform strength.

5. State area moment theorems.

6. Explain conjugate beam method.

7. The maximum shear stress in a solid shaft of diameter 25 cm is


60MPa. Find the maximum torque that can be transmitted by the
shaft.

8. Two springs are connected in (i) in serial and (ii) parallel. If the
spring constants are 6N/mm and 8N/mm what is the equivalent
spring constants for the two cases.

9. What is the ratio of the circumferential stress to axial stress


developed in a thin cylinder subjected to internal pressure?

10. Define principal planes and principal stresses.

PART─B (5×16=80 marks)

11. (a) (i) Derive the relation between modulus of (6)


elasticity and modulus of rigidity.

(ii) A bar ABCD is subjected to loads as shown in (10)


fig.1. Length of AB is 0.75m, length of BC is
1m and length of CD is 1.2m. Cross section
area of AB is 1600mm2, cross section area of
BC is 625mm2 and cross section area of CD is
900mm2. Given E = 200GPa compute the net
change in length of the bar.

Or

(b) A steel rod of 5cm diameter is enclosed centrally in a (16)


hollow copper tube of external diameter 10cm and
internal diameter 8cm. The ends of the tube are closed
by rigid plates and an axial pull of 60kN is applied to
the rigid plate. In addition the assembly is subjected to
change in temperature of 50°C. The coefficient of
linear expansion for steel is 12×10-6 and that for

copper is 18×10-6. Find the stress developed in copper
and steel.

12. (a) A beam ABC is of length 6m and simply supported at (16)


A and B. Length of AB is 4m and that of BC is 2m.
The entire span of the beam is subjected to uniformly
distributed load of intensity5kN/m and a downward
shear load of 5kN is applied at C. Draw the shear
force and bending moment diagrams indicating the
point of contra flexure if any and the maximum
bending moment.

Or

(b) (i) A beam of length 8m and uniform section as (10)


shown in fig.2 is simply supported at at its ends.
It is subjected to a shear force of 10kN
(downward) at the mid point and entire span is
subjected to uniformly distributed load of
intensity 2kN/m. Compute the maximum tensile
stress and compressive stress developed in the
in the section.

(ii) Derive the expression for the shear stress (6)


distribution for a rectangular section and obtain
the ratio of the maximum shear stress to average
shear stress.

13. (a) A beam of uniform section and length 8m is simply (16)


supported at its ends. It is subjected to a load of 60kN
(downward) at a point 3m from left support. Using
double integration method compute the deflection at
the point of application of the load. EI = 2×107N-m2.

Or

(b) A beam of uniform section and length 10m is simply (16)


supported at its ends. The beam is subjected to
uniformly distributed load of intensity 10kN/m over
the entire length. Also it is subjected to a load of
50kN (downward) at 3m from left support and a load
of 60kN at 4m from right support. Using McCauley’s
methods compute the deflection at the points of the

application of the loads. EI=2×107Nm2.

14. (a) A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/8 is to transmit a (16)


power of 400kW at 120rpm. The maximum shear
stress developed is restricted to 60MPa and twist over
a length of 5m is not to exceed 2°. Given G=85GPa
compute the diameters of the shaft satisfying both the
conditions.

Or

(b) (i) Derive the expression for the deflection of a (6)


close coiled helical spring.

(ii) The stiffness of a close coiled helical spring is (10)


2N/mm and subjected to a load of 60N. The
maximum shear stress is limited 125MPa and
solid length of the spring (colis touching each
other) is 5cm. Find the radius of the wire, mean
diameter of the coil and the number of turns. G
= 45GPa.

15. (a) (i) Derive the expression for volumetric strain of a (6)
thin cylinder subjected to internal pressure.

(ii) A cylindrical tube made of steel plate of (10)


thickness 10mm and 1.2m internal diameter is
subjected to an internal pressure of 1.5MPa. It is
also subjected to a bending moment of 2.5kN-
m. Compute the maximum and minimum stress
developed in the tube.
Or

(b) (i) Derive the expressions for the orientation of (8)


principal plane and principal stresses.

(ii) Normal stresses σxx = 120MPa and σ yy = (8)


-90MPa are applied at a point in a body. It is

also subjected to shear stresses. If the maximum
principal stress is 150MPa what must be applied
shear stress and also compute the maximum
shear stress.
