Media Technology: Its Effects to Humanity

Facebook, Mobile Legends, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube are just some of the

applications we can see in our media technologies that are gaining attentions from today’s

generations. New media technology is a form of media used to acquire and allocate information

in a digital way. But, the media technology, such as mobile phones, computers, virtual worlds,

and website games, has negative effects on the life of students, society, and the mental health of

many people.

Media technology is a medium used to communicate others in a more high-tech way. It is

also used for obtaining information in just one click away. Aside from these, it can also entertain

many people by its fun online and virtual world games. But despite its positive impact, it also

carries lots of disadvantages.

The media technology affects the life of students. They tend to be less active

academically because they are more focused and entertained on social media or online games.

According to Imtiaz Ali (2018), the more children indulge themselves on entertainment of media

technology, the less they can concentrate and focus on their studies. They also tend to forget how

to think critically in school works and more likely to be involved in Plagiarism. The site of

Kidslox stated that children overuse technology that leads to cheating or plagiarism because new

technology makes the new generation people lazier to read and find information in books. And

they tend to spend their time more on thinking what to post or what to play next than what to do

for their schoolworks. Kidslox also said that technology makes the people’s thinking ability

“jeopardy” or loss in other word.

Second, media technology affects the society. It can increase the people with obesity because

they are more likely to spend their time using their gadgets at home than doing productive things

that will benefit their physical bodies. According to Julie Adam (2018), technology can cause

lack of physical activities that leads to complications in physical body. It can also give us too

much information to the point that many people are already confuse on what is right and wrong,

and sometimes lead us to automaticity. John Cook (2017) said that many people are spreading

and sharing fake news than the real ones because many people are not information literate

individual. And it can affect the foundation of the relationship of people because they tend to

build more conversation online than face-to-face. Goodtherapy stated that it can increase

problems between partners and dissatisfaction in their relationship.

Lastly, media technology affects the mental health of people. It can cause anxiety and

depression because the changes in technology also change the standards of humanity. The site of

Goodtherapy also said that new media can cause the fear of missing out wherein many people are

willing to involve their selves to every trend. It can also lower self-esteem because technology

sets the level of what is beautiful and not. According to Clarissa Silva, media shows the positive

sides of other people’s lives, and because of this, the users tend to compare their lives to others.

And it can also increase addiction wherein using media technology is already part of the

everyday routine. FCD Prevention Works said, the use of new technology has the ability to

connect constantly, because of this instant connection, people may encourage to do more tasks

using this for longer time that result to addiction.

The media technology, such as mobile phones, computers, virtual worlds, and website

games, has negative effects on the life of students, society, and the mental health of many people.

The continuous development of technology greatly affects how humans think, act, and perceive

something to reach the fluctuating qualities it brings to the society. To avoid or lessen its

negative impact, it is better to control ourselves in using these things and appreciate real things

even more than virtual ones.
