    USMLE STEP 1 GUIDE

    Registering for the exams ( Passport required)


    1.Go to Online-Services Click on IWA.

    2.Choose that you don’t have USMLE ID and create new one
    3. Check the boxes and agree to the instructions

    4.Check the box I have never submitted application and click next
    4. Fill out the application and check the agree box and click submit. It usually takes 4-6 days
    to receive the ID
    5.Once you receive your ID. Go to online services and click on IWA and login for the first
    time with the temporary password they will send. Then you can change your password.

    6.Click on application for ECFMG certification. Fill in your data and take care, your name
    should match the name on your passport. You will be asked to pay 135$.
    7. Once you pay, they will send you form 186 (identification form) which will be available on
    IWA. Download it

    8. It has an instruction page and a form. You are required to separate the form and save as
    pdf. U can use this website for slitting the pdf.

    9.Scan your passport.

    10. Go to ecfmg portal of notarycam.

    11.Choose the form “186”.


    12. Upload your form and your passport scan and they will send you email confirmation.
    Schedule your appointment immediately or later as required.

    13.During the appointment you are required to be formally dressed and have the passport
    with you. They will check your identity and will ask you to show your passport, then will take
    a photo. (if they are not able to take a good photo of yours, you are required to mail them
    recent passport size photo). You will receive a confirmation notice to your mail after the
    interview.

    14. Within 10 days, ECFMG will send you an email that they received your form which is
    valid indefinitely.

    15. After you receive the email stating form 186 is accepted.

     Go to ECFMG.org
     Click on online services and select IWA
     Enter your ecfmg id and password and log in
     Click on begin a new application
     Fill out form for desired exam and make the payment
     If your med school participates in EMSWP then get your student status
    verified online by calling your med school.

    If your med school does not participate in EMSWP you are required to get
    from 183 signed by med school along with a copy of medical
    transcript and diploma and ask them to send it to ecfmg.

     Processing of your application takes anywhere between 3-4 weeks. Wait


     You will receive a mail after your application is verified which also contains
    scheduling permit.

    16. Book a date at Prometric


    Prometric is the testing service that conducts all USMLE exams.

    Go to https://www.prometric.com/en-us/Pages/home.aspx

    Click on Schedule my test and select USMLE. Select your testing location and preferred
    date of exam within your eligibility period.
    You will have to enter details from the scheduling permit in order to complete the booking
    process.
